Consulate Review: Guangzhou, China

Event Description

Embassy Review : One detail my fiance mentioned that I don't remember reading in other reviews was that they did a sort of group swearing-in before they started the interviews, having the interviewees promise to tell the truth. The interviewer's first question (asked in Chinese) was whether he had been sworn in. The rest of the interview questions were asked in English. They were, roughly:

-How did you meet your fiance?
-What was the name of the friend who introduced you?
-What was your fiance's job then? What is it now?
-What's your job? (my fiance explained he doesn't have a job yet; he just graduated from college last year. not a problem, apparently)
-Where is your fiance now?

The consular officer looked at our pictures. It sounded like he was quite friendly, and kept saying "no problem, no problem" after my fiance finished answering. Approved!

I really hate bureaucracy, but I have to admit the process went pretty smoothly, especially considering how busy GUZ is. When I sent them emails, they usually answered very quickly. My biggest complaint is that it took 6 days after the interview to get the visa, which wouldn't be a big deal except that we didn't know when it would be ready, and my fiance stayed in Guangzhou to wait because he was planning to leave the country as soon as he had it. If they'd at least told him it would take 6 days he could have made better use of his time. Then there's the fact that he had to pick the passport up at the post office, which charged him 23 RMB for the "service" of handing it across the counter. Not much in the scheme of things, but why not just do pick-up at the consulate?

Local US CIS Office Review: Baltimore MD

Event Description
Review Date : March 16, 2013
Embassy Review : We were summoned for an interview for my husband's AOS (from K-1 visa). We'd spent quite a bit of time gathering all the documentation listed on the appointment letter, but the only things the officer asked to see were our IDs (passport, EAD, and driver's license for him; just driver's license for me). When I offered a notarized copy of our marriage license (as specified on the appointment letter), she said "we don't require certified copies anymore."

The agent explained to my husband that because of a mix-up with his name, two files had been created for him, so she didn't have the K-1 paperwork in front of her and would need to request it, which would cause a delay. He said that he wants to change his name, and she said that if he could get that done within the next month, she could get the new name put on his green card--otherwise he would need to get a new green card with the new name. Then she went over his AOS forms and confirmed the answers with him. I never really had a sense that we were being "interviewed"--there were no questions about our relationship. At one point she took his I-9 form and said she would recommend the case for approval, but that it would probably take about 60 days for him to get the card because of the dual file issue.

We were in an out in less than an hour.
Harassment Level : Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
