The MLC building where the Sydney U.S consulate was easy to find, 5-10 minute walk away from Wynard railway station.
So before my interview I had some brekkie on the bottom levels of the building. They have a whole variety of restaurants/cafes where they have good food/coffee.
Made my way to level 10 and took out my packets, my wallet and clear water bottle, as well as switched off my phone, and my smart watch.
The security person will check that your devices are off before sending you inside to the desk. At the desk, the person asks for your passport and checklist, and reads out the checklist so you can hand the papers to them. They will compile it into a folder. They will also open up your sealed medical report if you have it on you.
I had to go photocopy my Japanese police check (lived there for a year), as it was in a sealed envelope addressed to the consulate so I wasn't allowed to open it. They gave me my compiled package and I went off to photocopy which is on the same floor as the consulate.
I came back and went through security. They have 2 trays. The blue tray is where your paperwork goes and anything else you're taking with you. They make you take a sip of your water just to ensure it's water. The red tray is where your phone and other electronic devices, plus any wires (charger, earphones etc) go into. They go through the scanner thing, and you also walk through the scanner door thingy. They then put your belongings from the red tray into your bag, and place the bag into a pidgeon hole. They give you a card with a number on it that is associated with the pidgeon hole.
You then take a seat until they call you up to take the elevator. There will be a person in the elevator accompaying you to the 57th floor. Once you step out of the elevator, you take the step to the right and they tell you to pull the door to go through. I took a number and just waited to be called.
The first time they called me was to collect all my paperwork and double check. I had to go back down to security as I needed my second passport photo which the front ladies did not take out when compiling my file which was annoying. There were also a few others with me who had the same problem and came down with me as well. Went back up and gave it to the officer. He took my fingerprints, told me to sit back down and will call me for any further information if needed.
While I was waiting I was listening to a few others in front getting interviewed. Some getting approved, some missing paperwork and others not having the right police check (AFP is the correct one).
The second time I got called up was my interview. He said the oath which I agreed to and took my fingerprints again. He then asked me some questions.
- how did me and my fiance meet?
- have you visited the us?
- when was the last time he saw you?
And then told me I was approved! I got all my original documents back as well as my papers. They kept my passport. |

Once I got off the plane, I went straight to ask where I need to go with my sealed envelope. They told me that I don't need to use the machines to check in and to go to the exit straight away to get to immigration officers.
I got there and gave him my envelope, as well as the US customs card they give you on the plane. He was very friendly. I slightly freaked out when the officer said my finance stuff was missing, but another officer said that as long as my medical papers are in the envelope, then it should be fine. The officer stamped my visa, and I went on my way to get my next plane! |
