Medical exam:
Physical exam was pretty simple. My fiancé was only asked to take off his shirt and shoes. Doctor checked his heart, blood pressure, eyes, height, weight, etc. He asked him a few questions – what type of visa, where does your fiancée live, do you smoke, and have you had any major surgeries. He was sent to different areas in the building to have his xrays and blood taken. According to what the doctor checked off on the order for blood work (I’m not positive about this but this is what it seemed to be), they checked for syphilis, HIV, glucose levels, kidney and liver function levels (perhaps because my fiancé checked off ‘yes’ for alcohol). Then he had his xrays and that was about it. He had his medical exam on a Tuesday morning and was told to pick up the results on Friday afternoon.
Visa Interview (I attended with my Peruvian fiancé):
Our interview was scheduled for 8:45am and we arrived an hour early – maybe a little too early since we spent the majority of the time just waiting for the first window. When they finally called us to the window (it was window #12, I believe), the Peruvian women behind the counter asked us for all our paperwork (police records, birth certificate, medical, DS-156, DS-156K, DS-157, I-134), evidence and we were told to pay the $350 interview fee (that was done at another counter). She asked us only a few questions – how do you know each other, when did you meet, how many times have I been to Peru, do you have any children. Then we sat down again. After some more waiting, we were called to the consul at window 9. She was a young woman – around my age (mid-20s). We both walked up to the window together and almost immediately she approved the visa. She didn’t really ask any questions. Just asked for my fiance’s height and weight, and spent time typing things into the computer. She gave us the pink sticker, told us that the visa was approved and to go to the DHL counter.
Our case was relatively simple – besides my fiancé being denied a tourist visa two years ago (which he was never asked about during the interview and I thought that they would), my fiancé and I are both the same age, met three years ago, and have no children or previous marriages. Compared to other k1 interviews and medicals in other countries that I have read about, the medical and interview in Lima seem to be rather straightforward. The consul was friendly but don’t expect smiles from the Peruvian women who worked there. We left the embassy around 10:30am.
