Interview was early, so I got to the embassy earlier and well before the doors opened. I also got a hotel nearby, even though I lived in London at the time, albeit on the other side of the city - this is to avoid delays on the Underground and other public transport and rushing and being all sweaty as it was summertime.

The queue was quite long, but it went down pretty fast. I had a bottle of water going through the security. They allow for water bottles, even filled, to go through, but they ask you to drink some of it, so to prove that it's actually water (or at least a clear and non-toxic liquid, though I don't recommend smuggling a bit of gin).

Having the interview as early as I did, I think it was 0830 or 0930 if I remember, the embassy was very quiet as the people dispersed once entering. I did not have to wait very long, and they called me up to the interview booth. It was standing only - no seating at the booth. The questions were very informal - they asked a little background of my life and also some background of my relationship with my partner. They had all the documents already. It was done within ten minutes. They also handed some documents about my rights entering the US, such as information on trafficking and domestic abuse, and what I should and could do in such an instance.

That was about it. There was nothing too formal at all about it. The embassy was very navigable. The staff were very nice and helpful.
