We had our interview scheduled for 7:40 am on April 5th. Arriving at the consulate at 6:45 am, we joined the immigration line opposite the queue for regular visas, accompanied by approximately eight other applicants. Outside, individuals in orange vests offered a convenient phone storage service for a mere $R10, as phones were prohibited inside.
Before entry, we presented confirmation of our medical examination to one of the organizers. By 6:55 am, we were granted access to the consulate. Upon ascending to the upper level, we received a document organization guide. Subsequently, we submitted our documents and awaited our turn to be called.
When our name was called, we approached a window where our documents were thoroughly reviewed and verified. Following a brief ten-minute wait, we were summoned to another window for the interview. The interviewer conducted the session with utmost politeness, posing only four questions which concluded within a swift five minutes.
Regrettably, we had overlooked bringing my wife's old passport containing a previous US visa, essential for the cancellation required to issue a new one. Despite this oversight, our approval was granted, contingent upon submitting the old passport. Remarkably, we concluded our embassy visit by 8 am.
Overall, our experience was exceptionally positive. Accompanied by our five-month-old baby, we left our toddler under the care of a babysitter at home. Despite initial concerns about potential boredom or tantrums, the interview room pleasantly surprised us with a dedicated play area for children, ensuring a smooth experience for all.
The staff exhibited exemplary kindness and helpfulness throughout our visit. Reflecting on our experience, I recommend diligently bringing every possible document, regardless of its perceived relevance, as requirements may vary unexpectedly.
