Overall a really easy experience that I was anxious about for no reason (and if you're anxious like I was - there's no need to be!).
As others have said, you go through an airport security-like checkpoint. Put your documents and bag/coat in a bin that is x-rayed. Then you step through the metal detector and a guard asks you to put your electronics into a little apartment sized mailbox locker and hang on to the key.
I checked in at window 6, handed my passport to the CO who gave me a ticket and told me to have a seat. When my number was called I went to a different window and they asked me for the following documents:
- Proof of visa payment
- Photocopy of bio page of my passport
- Original and copy of beneficiary's birth certificate
- I-134 and 1040 from 2020 (I did not have the tax transcript but 1040 was fine and they did not ask for any other financial documents)
- Police Certificate(s)
- 2 Passport photos
They did NOT ask me for an intent to marry letter, and when I asked about it the CO said they no longer require it (?) I was asked to conform beneficiary and petitioner address, and he also asked me for my fiance's phone number.
After that I was given a domestic violence leaflet to read and instructed to sit down again. I was called to another window (using the same number I was given the first time) for the interview. I was asked:
- If I'd read and understood the domestic violence pamphlet given to me when I submitted my documents
- When/how we met
- What my fiance does for work & what I do for work
- Where I've traveled in the last 5 years
- How many/how long were my visits to the US
- Have I had any issues with immigration/the law before
- If I had any kids
That was it. He approved my visa, handed me the pink slip of paper and said congratulations All in all I was in and out in maybe an hour max. Super straightforward and easy!
