I had my interview on Friday and the experience was much, much more straight forward than I thought it was going to be.
My appointment was at 11:30 so I got there about 10, had a cup of tea at the cafe next to the embassy and picked up a snack from Waitrose as I had been told that the waiting times could be very long.
At 11 I went to the embassy. The guy at the door checked my DS160 and then I went through security after showing the guard my mobile phone and opening an app on it.
After getting through security I went to the reception area, was given a number, and was told to take the lift to the first floor and turn left twice to get to the immigrant visa section of the embassy.
I waited for around 10 minutes until my number was called. Handed over the documents that I was asked for; !-134, employment verification letter, bank statements showing deposits for the past year, reaffirmation letter, one passport photo for them to scan, my passport, police check letters from the UK and Japan, certified copy of my full form birth certificate and my change of name deed.
I wasn't asked for any proof of ongoing relationship, although I had loads chat logs, boarding passes, etc. Nor was I asked to show them pictures of me and my fiancee. I wasn't asked for tax returns either. Possibly because my fiancee had been working in Japan for the three years prior to starting her current job in the US in January and the employment verification letter clearly stated everything that was required.
So after handing in the documents asked for I went back to waiting. The wait was at least an hour and but it went fairly quickly despite the fact the wifi wasn't working and that I had left my book in my bag. After the wait I was called to another window were I was interviewed by an American lady.
She first asked me to raise my right hand and swear that what I was about to say was the truth. Then she asked me the following questions;
Where and how did you meet my fiancee?
When was the last time your saw your fiancee?
When is the wedding?
And because I had told the truth about smoking dope in my teens/early twenties during my medical, she asked me about my past drug use.
So five minutes after the interview had started she told me I had been approved. I was expecting more so I asked her if that was it and she said that it was and that my passport would be returned to me within ten working days. So after thanking her and asking again if that really was it she congratulated me and said that I was free to go.
I walked out of the embassy walked to the river and then phoned my fiancee to tell her the good news.
So, overall a very easy experience and as long as you have the i134 and everything else is in order your interview will be a breeze!
