I flew into Montreal from the Toronto island airport on Tuesday, May 14th. From the Montreal Airport I took the 747 bus to my hotel The Courtyard Marriott Downtown. The signs and machines in the airport to purchase bus tickets are clearly marked. I do not speak French and had no problems figuring it out. Some people have said that you can transfer to the metro at the first bus stop and it will get you where you’re going faster. I chose not to do that because minimizing transfers and hub bub minimizes anxiety for me. I was on the bus from 2:30pm to about 3:15pm, it was fine and honestly, only an additional 10-15 minutes or so from that first stop. I easily checked into the hotel which was less than a block from the bus stop (Jeanne-Mance St stop) Nice big clean room. Very pleasant staff.
Wednesday, May 15th, I arrived at the consulate at approximately 6:45am for my 7:30am appointment. I was the first person there. Slowly people began to arrive as we approached 7:30. The doors opened at 7:30am on the nose. I was asked for my appointment letter and my passport. I was given the laminated sheet with #1 written on it and my passport with a sticker on the back. I went through security, did not have my phone, a bag or a belt or watch with me so it was very fast and easy. They directed me down the stairs to wait for further instructions. I organized my paperwork in the order on the laminated sheet. My documents were all in an accordion folder and easily re-arranged.
After a few minutes a guard herded us all onto the elevator to the 19th floor. There I waited less than 5 minutes before my number was called. I went to the document window (#3) I was asked for:
• Passport
• Laminated sheet with my number
• Receipt for visa purchase
• Medical results (the do not open envelope)
• Letter of intent
• Registration of Live Birth (I had the other Ontario long form BC as well and he did not want it)
• Privacy Act Police certificate (I had the other 2 kinds as well and he did not want them)
• 2 passport photos
• Divorce certificate (he didn’t want the Divorce order that goes with it)
• I-134
• 2018 tax return (I had a bank letter, W2s, and previous year tax transcript and he didn’t want any of that) He only took maybe one page from the 2018 tax return and gave me the rest back
I was NOT asked for:
• DS-160 confirmation page
• Bank letter or supporting documentation other than 2018 tax return
• IRS transcripts
• Evidence of relationship
• P4 letter
• Appointment letter (only downstairs at the front door)
He confirmed my fiancé and my addresses and phone numbers and fingerprinted me. Then I was sent to go sit down again. I waited maybe another 7-10 minutes, and then was called to interview room number 7. They returned my original Birth Certificate and Divorce certificate - not the original police certificate. I took an oath with my right hand raised. My interviewer was training another staff member during my interview. I was asked the following questions.
• How did my fiancé and I meet
• When did we meet
• When did we decide to get married
• What does he do for a living
• Where does he live
• Do I intend to live with him in the United States
• Do I have a criminal record
• Have I ever been fingerprinted in the United States
Then she told her trainee that there are seemingly no issues and everything is fine. And she told me that my visa is ready to be issued. She gave me the hot pink “Welcome to the United States†letter, reminded me I must be married within 90 days of entering the US, and sent me on my way. Visa Approved!
I was back in my hotel room by 8:30am. Now I will wait for my 12pm check out, catch the 747 bus back to the airport (bus stop is across the street) and go back to Toronto.
Everyone was friendly and the process was painless. Being incredibly organized with my documents and knowing the process backward and forward because of VJ reviews made me cool as a cucumber. No nerves, just excitement!
