I had my interview yesterday
My appointment time was for 730, and we showed up right at 730. There was a short lineup of people outside - maybe 10 people. The security guard was inviting people in 3 at a time to allow for easier security screening. When I went inside, they asked to look at both my and my fiancé’s passports, and a sticker was placed on the back of mine. Then we were asked to go through a small screening, we walked through a metal detector and had our possessions x-rayed. They took our cellphones and were given a small ticket to claim them when we we ready to leave.
Then we were asked to go to a room downstairs and organize our paperwork in the order given to us on a laminated sheet of paper. These laminated papers also assigned us with numbers that would be used to call us when they needed to see us. For any adults who still needs their passport photos by this stage, there is also a photo booth in this area where you can get them. They cost $10.
Then we were taken up in groups of about ten to another floor and asked to sit. There are two vending machines here, one with snacks and one with drinks. But they only accept exact change, so don’t forget to bring some coins if you want this option!
I waited for about 20-25 minutes before my number was called. I went up to the window and the lady asked me to hand her my paperwork and for my fingerprints. This took about ten minutes to go over everything and I was asked to sit down.
I waited, perhaps, another 30-40 minutes and was called to a separate window. This one is a little more private. It’s still a glass window you stand at, but you’re in a tiny little room with a doorway.
She asked me to raise my right hand and take an oath that everything I was going to tell her was truthful.
She asked me questions like:
How long have you known your fiancé?
When did you start dating?
When did you decide to get married?
Have you met each other’s families?
Have you ever had problems crossing the border?
What was your longest stay in the USA?
Then she looked at my file on her computer for a few minutes, said everything looked good and then told me I was approved and given a pink paper that said “welcome to the United States†with instructions on what to expect as far as getting my visa package and what my instructions were for crossing the border and how to get started on my permanent residency application after I’m married.
The whole thing took about an hour and a half. Everyone was super friendly. It really is the easiest part of the whole journey
People were mostly dressed nicely. Women wore nice tops/blouses. A couple of men wore suit and ties. Other people walked in with casual/street clothes. So whatever you choose to wear, you’ll be fine.
