Went for my spousal interview with my wife, on the day they would not let her in with me because they said they have no room for family members. Citizen services to the left and visas to the right, only 6 or 7 seats. I was very surprised how small it is, they run a queue with poles and webbing and thankfully it was quiet when I was there. Called to to the window for document check, immediately told I would not get approval on the day because there was no expiry date on my medical. Then told to have a seat, (No seats) so I stood for about an hour waiting to be called to the two Windows for the interview stage. It's so small and there is no privacy, one family were being interviewed and the female officer kept screaming through the intercom do you not speak English. Everyone waiting looked very uncomfortable and embarrassed for the family, we could hear every word as it echoed through the room.
Around an hour wait and it was my turn, no privacy and I found the officer slightly aggressive. His questions were more to do with my American wife and what she has been doing since living in Ireland and what she would be doing when she returns. Not an enjoyable process at all and then I got a 221(g) to present proof of continuing income and a couple of other smaller things. The embassy is impossible to get someone to talk to on the phone and all communication is by email. But after three weeks I had provided them with everything they needed and my visa was issued.
Such a small space I would hate to be doing a spousal visa when the embassy is packed with students looking for J1's.
There was a recent article is Irish Central (online expats) that said embassy staff were being extra difficult because there is no current American ambassador to Ireland. I'm not sure that is the reason but I didn't see too many happy faces (staff or applicants) during my visit to the embassy
