Medical Exam Review:
I had my medical exam on December 9 at Dr. Ian Zatzman’s office in Vaughan, Ontario. There isn’t a lot of parking for the size of the building, but we managed. The office is small and on the second floor, the front desk ladies were slow and I waited 15 minutes just to get checked in. They took my passport, driver’s license, appointment email confirmation with my MTL number, 4 passport photos and immunization records to photocopy them. Had I not had my passport photos they do have a camera and can take your picture. I waited maybe 5 minutes after being checked in and was called in to see Dr. Zatzman. He was very professional and efficient. We filled out a computer document together regarding medical history, he filled in the immunization chart, took my height, weight, and blood pressure, and made me do an eye test with and without my glasses.
From there I went and signed in for my chest x-ray, they informed me the wait would be about 30 minutes so I could go get my blood tests done. The Dynacare lab was busy but fast, the lady who took my blood was very professional and joked about how “no one likes blood work.†When I returned to the x-ray lab they took me in right away and the x-ray took maybe 2 minutes.
The medical was easy and quick, I went into it super nervous but came out feeling fine. I was over prepared with a lot of paperwork, previous blood and urine tests, notes from doctors and a complete list of surgeries and medications. He didn’t make note of my birth control, migraine medication (because I take it so infrequently) or my two surgeries I have had.
As for the cost, I paid: $240 at Dr. Zatzman’s office, $60 at the X-Ray Associates office and $33.60 at the Dynacare lab for the urine and blood tests. Had I opted in for the courier services it would have been an extra $20.
My Interview was on December 21 and they were concerned they wouldn’t have time to receive the results and have it couriered to me, so I had to return the next Friday to pick up my results. I live an hour and a half away so that wasn’t a problem for me, but if you don’t live close by I would recommend giving more time between the medical and your interview if the results need to be delivered!
Interview Review:
I had my interview on December 21 at 8:30am. I live 6 hours away so my fiancé came up from the states and we spent the night at the Hotel Travelodge just down the street from the Consulate (literally a 5 minute walk!) The hotel room was small but we were only there for one night so we didn’t mind. We arrived outside the Consulate at around 7:50am, the entrance is kind of hidden around the corner and there was already a line of about 10 people. We got inside fairly quickly, he had to show his passport and I had to show my DS-160 and passport. I was given a laminated sheet with a number and the order my documents needed to be in. We went through the security room together (they were only letting 1 person through at a time, unless you were accompanied by someone) and went down the stairs to the elevator and up to floor 19.
We sat in the center area of the room under the “immigrant visa†sign and waited about 15 minutes before being called to window 1 where I had to give them all of the requested documents. My fiancé was able to accompany me to the first window. After giving them the documents we returned to the sitting area. It was pretty busy so we waited until around 9:30am before I was called up. I watched the girl before me go in and come out approved so it definitely put me at ease.
I was called to window 7 and the guy there was really nice. He took my oath that I was telling the truth and asked how my fiancé and I met and how often we have seen each other, as well as about our wedding plans which lead into a conversation about how expensive weddings are! I was only in there for about 5 minutes, then he handed me my “welcome to the USA†paper and told me the visa would arrive in a week and a half.
My visa status was updated to Administrative Processing December 22, and was issued December 23.
Overall the process was fast and easy, by far the most stressful part but it was worth it!
