Woohoo! Visa approved!

The interview process went smoothly. We arrived at 7:30 for our 8:00 appt, as we had read not to arrive more than 30 minutes early. We parked a block down the street for 200 pesos and walked to the line. There were perhaps 100 people in line for the immigrant line, and 10-15 in the other lines. I went to the head of the line to be sure what line to be in, since I was confused. She looked at our paper and waved both of us in in front of the other 100 people (possibly because of our interview time?). Although the website says not more than 30 minutes and 7:30 was just fine for us, if I could do it over I would have gotten there at 7:00 just for a little more breathing room.

Once they waived us past the outside line, we passed through security, which was a breeze. We brought nothing more than the documents and car keys. My fiancé and I both went through the same line. We then passed outside and into a large building on our left, where we took a ticket and had a seat.

Around 9:00 they called us up to window 6, where a nice young man with decent Spanish took some documents, then sent us to window 2 for fingerprints (even though my fiancé had already had them taken at the VAC?). We went back to window 6 for a few minutes, then had a seat for another hour and a half. The numbers are clearly marked on the monitors and if you miss it, officials walk up and down calling for you.

When they called us up again (this time to window 18) there was a middle-aged woman with poor Spanish who was frustrated with her computer. We stood (“on hold”) for about 7 minutes while she tried to get the computer to work. She was frustrated at the computer but pleasant toward us. Finally she swore us in and asked a few questions. She also had him write my full name. She seemed pleased that I was bilingual and he only speaks Spanish since she could do both interviews at the same itme.

Me:
-Tell me your story (wanted details)
-Do you have wedding plans (more details)
-What is his best friend’s name? (He has a Dominican best friend, and I carefully tried to say it in English)

Him:
-How does she drink her coffee in the morning?
-What is her favorite food?
-What is her birthday?
-Does he have kids?
-Do I have kids?

We answered the questions. She smiled and said that we had the most well-organized presentation [of papers..binders, plastic sheets, tabs] that she had ever seen. She also talked to my fiancé a little about what a wonderful person I am and how lucky he is to have me and that he should always provide for and love me. (Didn’t see that coming?) Then she smiled and said “Welcome to the United States. Your visa is approved.”

We exited the same way that we entered, other than that once outside the consulate, you exit to your far right.

Woohoo!!
