Review Topic: K1 Visa

I came with my fiancee to the embassy to help her out with filling the paperwork and to comfort her for the interview. We had our interview on August 18.

We arrived at the American embassy in Addis Ababa around 8:00am, the seating location was filled with people, we went to sit at the back. You organize your documents according to two groups: Documentation and Evidence of Relationship. As soon as you enter the embassy they give you a folder and you have to put your passport, passport size photos, birth certificate, non-marriage status, police certificate, ... etc. on there and when her number was called we head to the desk to submit the documents, then they took her electronic fingerprint (ashara), and told us to sit down till they call our name. We waited half an hour then we paid the $350 fee at the window, they gave us receipt and we were told to sit down again. Now we had to wait another 3 to 4 hours for her interview. I saw some people accepted, some rejected as they passed by. There is no watch there and they take ur cellphone at the entrance so if you have a watch its preferable to bring with you.

Then they called my fiance to the window for interview, the lady asked "who is he?" and she told her that's her fiancee. Then the lady asked me to sit down while she interview her. She asked her questions like "What does your fiance do for a living" "When did you first meet" "Where does your fiance live?" "How do you keep in contact?" she said mostly by phone and she asked for phone records. We showed her the Ethio Tele corp list and also long distance company record i printed out (it was very long 10 pages). She glanced over it then she asked "When will you get married?" "Why didn't you get married here in Ethiopia?" she ask this a couple times my fiance explained most my family is in America. Then my fiance showed her the photos we have together and she believed the relationship more. Then she said "Congradulations!" We were soo happy and relieved. Alhamdulilah (Thank God) for everything.

Another issue the name of fiance on the visa was mixed up because another girl with similar name had interview the same day. She had to go back to embassy and replace visa and packet. Be very sure the information on the visa is correct so you can avoid any problems like deportation or immigration problem.

Thanks for visa journey and American embassy in Ethiopia

I have reached there at 7:22 am thinking am early one. But inside there were people seating and waiting. The earlier you come the earlier you will be interviewed since they will give you a ticket number and make you wait. At first I was asked to give my passport and interview paper. She asked me for “ashara”, that is finger print. I gave her, by the way it took me only two days to get the finger print( you need 2 photos and 10 birr fee). Medical I had at Cathedral Clinc at piassa. So I started waiting for my interview and at 11am it was my turn. I never been to the embassy I thought I would be interviewed in a room. But I approached the booth behind there is the interviewer and translator. I was asked to raise my right hand and swear. I did. While the translator started speaking I said in English “I do” So I done my interview with English. If it is possible it is better that way. I have not been asked that much. It took me 3 or 5 minutes at max. Considering the day I got interviewed three people got rejected and interviewed at length. I have seen people showing pics with no good results. I say GOD made it possible for me. Just have the phone records. If you are using those phone cards. Have emails as well. Knowing who is who in the photos.
I have been asked-What my wife work is? What is the company she works with? What is the other job (She doesn’t have any other my case). Who is her Ex husband? How did they got divorced? I show him a pic, there is one picture where our priest was with us, he asked me the priest name. He also read the Postcards. He asked me, what that means on that paper. Generally it was GOD way of doing things that help me. I remember a friend of mine being asked “how you meet eachother” three times, other times she was asked for Finacial evidences (tax returns). It was a good experience for me.

Review Topic: General Review

Well, my wife had her interview on June 29th 2010, wow what a let down. When I called her she was bawling her eyes out. I really felt bad for her, even though we had at that point known each other for over 2 years and had been married for close to 6 months, there were a lot of things I hadnt shared with her, and in the interview they really hit her with the difficult questions. The red flag on our case was that I being in the military was stationed in a tax free zone for a part of 2009 so on my W-2 it appeared that I made a lot less than I actually did, so they were like how did he he go to ethiopia and get married when he only made xx amount of dollars. Then they were off to the races asking her all kind of really intimidating questions some of which she should have known and some which she couldnt have. In addition I have a job that I cant talk about much so she didnt know much about that either. I can understand that it looked fishy, and in the COs defense he did say sorry, I cant give you a visa today, but she was miffed, and sad. So was I, but here I am on December 2 with the reaffirmed case notice in hand and just waiting for round 2 of the interview, we are well prepared this time and I will be traveling to Ethiopia to assist her this time and go to the interview with her.
I told her we are going to do this thing together baby. Alot of times we want to blame the Embabssy and sometimes they should bare full brunt of the blame but alot of times its us. If we want our loved ones to get that precious visa and come join us in this country we need to be prepared. Lesson learned, and no love lost. So I hope this will be a piece of advice to one of my visa journey friends cause I wish some one had put me up on the game before that first interview.
