Quick and Efficient. The appointment was at 7:45 - showed up 5 minutes early for my timeslot, plenty of time, the guard was well on top of things, and he was amazed there was a group there waiting for their 8 am appointment out in the cold, he encouraged them to go get a coffee and come back, but they were fine to wait in the cold.

Admittedly I came over prepared - I had my own copies of everything that I printed off, more tax details than my spouse I needed, the full i-864, etc.

Ultimately they only asked for the originals of my Wife's W2 (We used an i-864EZ), my birth certificate, our marriage certificate, and my police certificate. Also requested were the Pictures and my Passport.

That first process was about 5 minutes after I sat down. My interview was about 15 minutes later and Approved after the standard questions. I did add my daughter's CRBA during the interview. I was there for less than an hour.

I was approved on the spot, they did mention the system was slow. everything was updated online later that day. I received my shipping tracking the next day for my passport. Should be in my hands in 2 days.

I had my interview at the Montreal Consulate on February 8, 2024 at 7:45 AM.

I stayed at the Best Western Downtown Europa, which is quite literally around the corner from the consulate. I walked over around 7:35 after seeing notes from others saying you don't really need to be there early, since a security officer pops outside and asks everyone in line what time their interviews are. If you're scheduled for 7:45 but the person in front of you is scheduled for 8:00, they will take you out of line and bring you inside. There was probably 10-15 people in line already when I got there.

Once inside you give your passport to someone who checks your name off a list, gives you two pieces of paper with your number on it and puts a sticker on the back of your passport. You go through an airport-style security before being told to put your phone and smart watch (if wearing one) into a locker. You take the key with you when you go upstairs. You'll take the elevator up one floor to the waiting room and take a seat anywhere.

There's one big TV showing which cases are being talked to at which counter. I think there were 12 counters total, but only 4 or 5 were actively being worked on. There's a loud DING every time a new number pops up, you can't miss it. I sat there for about 45 minutes before my number popped up on the screen and I went up to my counter. The woman I was with was pretty direct and to the point. Not a whole lot of chit-chatting at all.

First she asked for my passport to pull up my case. Then she started asking for documents one by one. My birth certificate, marriage certificate, police certificate, passport photo and my wife's 2022 1040 Tax Return form. She checked over everything, fingerprinted me and then told me I could go back and sit down to wait for my number to be called again for the actual interview portion.

I sat down for probably another half an hour before it was called and I went to a different counter for that. I thought the interviews would be done in a closed room, but you're just standing at a counter, so if there's someone at the counter next to you, you can hear them clear as day.

The woman there asked me to raise my right hand and swear that everything I was saying is the truth. You then take your right hand fingerprints as a signature. She asked fairly standard questions: where did you meet your wife, what did you do on your first date, what does your wife do for work, how long was your longest stay in the United States, have you lived anywhere other than Canada in the past 5 years, have you visited any other countries than the US in the past 5 years.

She still had the documents I gave to the first woman (birth certificate, marriage certificate), and the only thing she seemed a little "weary" about was our marriage certificate. I admit it doesn't necessarily LOOK overly official, but it WAS the one that was given to us and that we signed when we were married at the courthouse. She asked me if I had any other marriage certificates, to which I said "No, that's the one that was given to us." She took it with her around the corner, I imagine talking to someone else to see if they could verify it's legitimacy.

After two minutes or so she came back around the corner, continued punching things into her computer before turning to me and saying "Congratulations, I just approved your visa."

She handed me a sheet of paper showing how you can track your passport through the mail, and that was basically it. Now I'm just waiting for it to arrive so I can finally head South!

Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa

We had a pleasant experience overall with the consulate. My husband had his interview on December 22nd, 2023. The interview went well and the officer was polite and asked my husband a few questions before letting him know he would put our case into administrative processing. We received a 221G white slip and were asked to send his passport in. My husband sent his passport the next day, on December 23rd, and it was received on December 27th. I emailed the consulate on January 8th, 2024, inquiring about the case status, and on January 22nd, I received a response stating our case was "pending final review by a consular officer."

By chance, I checked the visa status on January 30th, and the visa had been issued! On Feb 1st, my husband received his passport with the visa stamped in it, crossed the border the same day, and is currently on his way to me in Nevada!!

** I will say this has been a slightly stressful experience for us both. My husband was not allowed to visit the US because the visa application was being processed, and now he has his IR1 visa. It was tough at first with only me being able to travel to Canada just so we could be together, but in the end, it really was worth it**

Review Topic: Medical Appointment

Went to Vancouver for my medical appointment just after Christmas at Dr Cheema’s office. Experience was great as the staff were helpful and easy to work with. I had a shor done at the clinic and was out of there pretty quickly. They sent me to a lab that we were able to walk to for bloodwork and a urine sample, then we went to a clinic for a very quick chest xray. The process was quick and simple and I was sent an email a couple days from Cheema’s office later letting me know that they’d emailed the medical exam information and results to the consulate in Montreal.

I had my interview at the consulate in Montreal just a few days ago. The process went smooth and pretty fast. My time was quite early in the morning, and I showed up 5-10 mins prior to the given time. A security officer waved me in to the building and I gave my passport to another and was given 2 number slips. I went through small security and put my phone in a locker. You take the elevator to floor 1 and are put out into a waiting room with chairs to sit in open to the booths you’ll be called to by number. I sat and waited for my number to appear on the screens. I waited around 20 or so minutes before I was called to a booth and was asked for my original marriage certificate, original longform birth certificate, my husband’s (sponsor) tax returns, my police certificate, and my 2 passport photos. The officer then stated my address and my husband’s address in the States and asked if those were correct. He also then asked if our phone numbers were correct. He hung on to my marriage certificate, birth certificate, and husband’s tax returns then gave me a pamphlet on trafficking and DV and told me then to take a seat again and wait for my number to be called for the interview. I waited for around 40-50 minutes before being called to a different booth and was asked to take an oath of truth, then was asked a few questions about where my husband works and what he does for work, how and when we met, what our first date was, if I’ve ever committed a crime, if I’ve ever lived anywhere outside of Canada, if I have travelled anywhere besides the United States and Canada in the last 5 years, what my longest stay was in the U.S. and if I have ever stayed too long. The lady then said my visa was approved and I’d get it in my passport that they’d send back within a week or two. It took 2 business days for the passport to arrive at my house. Very fast and easy process to end a very slow process of waiting.
