Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

Arrived at USCIS field office parking lot at 7.45am for Appointment at 8.15am. The security officer checked the appointment notice, and after xray scanning bag/document folder told us to proceed to adjoining waiting room and submit papers on the window marked as 'Interview'. They were very polite and did not give us any hard time. There were many people already seated in the waiting room, however most of them turned out to be ASC appointment candidates as the opposite room for Biometrics did not open till 8am. At 8.15am an AO called me by my name, so I went ahead to greet him 'Good morning' and to indicate to him that my US Citizen wife (petitioner) is here with me as well. AO asked me and my wife to accompany him to interview room. The sequence of events is as below:

1) Told us to stand, raise right hand and swear under oath that we will tell only the truth.

2) Scanned first page of IDs (passports) of me and my wife. Then flip through passport pages as both of us had tourist visas, stamps from many countries from prior business/vacation related travel.

3) Opened my I-485 form, took a photograph, fingerprinted my index fingers, asked my full legal name, DOB, POB, mailing address. I mentioned that we had bought a new house recently and that I had filed a form AR-11 electronically, I also handed him its printout with confirmation number assigned by USCIS, to which he checked on his computer to verify change of address and made a note in the I-485 paper form to use new updated address. Then asked my parents name and if I have any siblings in U.S.

4) Asked my wife her full legal name, DOB, POB, qualification, job and how she got her US Citizenship.

5) Asked details about marriage : date, place, if I have any kids, if it was my first marriage, etc.

6) Asked series of 40+ questions that are under general inadmissibility and criminal background. All of them were answered "No" except for the prior Visa denials which I had checked as "Yes" as my F1 visa was denied in first attempt, so he asked about the denial reason and if I was able to get it later. I told him that I was denied due to insufficient financial proof and that later I was able to get same type visa in second attempt after showing fund allocation in bank statements. Also mentioned about the Masters degree from US university that I got under that F1 visa. It was more than 16 years ago so he did not ask more and just made a note about the university and degree I got.

7) Asked me when and how I met my wife.

8) Asked my wife: how many times we met in person before marriage, and on which visa / passport she traveled to meet me. She also mentioned about the two vacation trips we had prior to marriage. He did not ask for any paper proof though. It was all front-loaded evidence as part of initial application.

10) Asked if we have paperwork of our new house and joint accounts as husband and wife. So we handed him Title company statement, Utility bills, Auto Policy, Health Insurance, Joint account bank statements, etc which had both our names. He was glad to see that we had originals and already made copies as part of interview preparations.

11) AO took a minute to check form I-485 if he had additional questions to ask about my case, then said that our file looks complete and that he will recommend my case for approval. He indicated that official approval is pending and I'll get auto notified if I have subscribed to SMS and email alerts. Also mentioned that if I am approved in system then I'll get card in about two weeks and it will be a conditional card with 2 year expiry that is good for work and travel. And that I have to remember to apply 90 days before expiry using form I-751 with evidence to remove the conditions.

From all prior posts in VJ it is known fact that Kansas City FO does not do on the spot approvals, and that they approve in system after 3 to 4 days, which is what was noticed by us as well. Overall it was a short and easy interview and feel lucky to get an AO who seemed to have a general happy-go-lucky attitude.

Review Topic: Adjustment of Status

We had our interview today and it was overall a stress and anxiety free experience. We got there an hour early and were so glad we did. It seemed that they doing first come, first serve basis. The guards are extremely friendly and funny. They immediately make you feel relaxed. We waited for about 40mins to be called up. Our IO was so laid back, explained everything in detail. He swore us in. The we sat down facing him. He further explained what his questions were going to be like. Which we really thought was awesome. He then just verified information off the application forms. He asked a few questions about why we decided to get married, verified how we met, asked if we knew each other's families. He didn't ask us anything about our home, pets etc.. he then asked me the Yes or No questions that's similar to what's on form, about crime, terrorism etc...before he could end , he verbally said, he will be approving us. He then explained in great detail how I can use green card and how long it lasts. He said the next focus will be to submit more information for the Removing Conditions one. Then he said we were good to go and he wished us the best. We thanked him, shook his hand and he even walked us out. Our experience at this office was brilliant and was so appreciated because they made things what they should be...human and straightforward. We wish all those waiting for their interviews all of the best

Review Topic: General Review

We just made our second visit to this office and have been treated so well. Everyone is friendly and professional and respectful. Right when you come in, the security guards put you right at ease. Since all of the immigration processes are nerve wracking, it is such a relief to have a delightful service experience when visiting this office.
