Since I am the USC, I am relaying the bits and pieces Kas has provided me about the interview process and his experience.
As he lives in London, he didn't need to make prior arrangements for a hotel in the area, so I cannot provide a place to stay for out-of-towners.
He arrived at the embassy around 7:15 and noted that there was already a massive queue outside. Once he got inside and received his number, he was there until a little after 10am. His two interviewing officers were very nice: a charming American guy and a very lovely American woman.
Number 1 took all his required documents, and had Kas go wait until his number was called again, while Number 2 swore him under oath and asked him a few questions-how we met, when did we last visit one another, what I do for a living, etc. It really was like a small chit-chat, nothing too invasive. Both officers mentioned that as a Brit, he would be very happy with the temperatures here and that ... read complete review

I attended my IR-1 visa interview at the US Embassy - London, on March 27th, 2015.
After reading online that queues can be horrendous, I decided to arrive early, at 6.30am for my 8am appointment. I was the 3rd person in line when I arrived. Within 20 minutes or so, the queue (line?) was up to 50 people or so. By 7.15am, there were over 100 people queued up, including a UK TV presenter and singer (think "The Voice"), a coach-load of Royal Navy sailors and some sort of random grungey-looking rock band!
The process started around 7.30am. They set-up a gazebo and a couple of desks outside, then start checking people, whilst another person starts splitting the queue.
I was the first person queued-up for an immigrant visa and was the 3rd person through the simple security check. You can keep mobile phones with you, they're only really concerned about laptops or bigger. After security you turn right and head around to the entrance, where they check your passport and appo... read complete review

I got to the embassy at about 6.25am because im overly vigilante. i stood and spoke to two guys one was doing the b1 or b2 visa the other was ir-1/cr-1 or whatever it is. theyre were awesome though. actually made me a lot less stressed about the situation.
at roughly 6.45 a small asian man told us to queue along side the fence there instead of standing at the door of the visa gold roofed thing.
at roughly 6.50 a man with long hair came out and erected a marquee. he had a Fabio Lanzoni vibe about him, or maybe he was born with it.
not long after that two small cabinets were wheeled out. this is a desk that the people checking you appointment letter, passport and DS-160 would sit at. they also give you a plastic bag to put stuff in.
Not long after that some people in uniform wheeled out some chairs and sat down to start allowing people to come in. a girl came out and was telling people what documents to have ready then s... read complete review

So, i had a 9am appointment, I'm not a worrier by nature so didn't bother getting there at 6am or anything, just rocked up at 8.15am. There was a line, not too long really, and a lady walking up the line checking letters, i went straight to her (she was at the top of the line anyway) and said I had an immigration interview and showed her my letter, she told me to go see her colleague at the desk who scribbled on my form and i was let straight into security.
So to reiterate what a couple of others have said, if you have immigration interview (i.e. K1) you don't have to queue, as there are people queueing for all kinds of visas. So go straight to the person checking the letters or go to the desk.
Once inside I received my number and sat down to wait, only waited about 30 mins and did the first window slot of giving over documents. The lady said my background to my photo was off white but she accepted it anyway. Then I returned to a seat and waited for the ... read complete review

Quick and professional. They say no laptops, but mean nothing with a keyboard, so if you have a tablet make sure you leave the keyboard behind!
The interview was an absolute breeze, but we sent a lot of documents in with our application.
