I thought I'd share my experience of my interview. I was at the consulate for an immigrant (cr-1) visa.

Almost got off to the worst start, only realised the night before that the passport photos for the u.s.a are bigger, luckily Paddington station had a photo both that done American size pics. It turns out the embassy has two machines for photos. Think it was £7.

Anyway, my interview was at 8.30, I was there for 7, just to have a look at what was going on. There's was already people waiting but no queues, I went for a walk until goulds pharmacy was open as I wanted to dump my back pack, just incase it wasn't allowed in the embassy. Didn't see any point in risking it for the sake of £3. They charge more the bigger the bag, as the girl infront of me was charged more for a small case. They also won't take bags with laptops or glass bottles. Mines only had clothes. Just to add, I did see people with back packs in the embassy but don't know if there was onl... read complete review

Arrived pretty early - lots of people in line, but I went directly to a member of staff who literally escorted me to the front and I bypassed the whole line. Through security, around the outside of the building and then to a desk where a number was issued. Into a big holding area with lots and lots of seats (think conference centre/bus garage circa 1970) with a big screen showing numbers as needed to go to a window.

First window was handing over documents and then told to take a seat again, then quickly I was called for the 'interview'. 3 or 4 direct questions, how did we meet, when did we meet, why we chose to live in the US and not the other way round. And that was that. Told I was approved! Quite straight forward, but nerve wracking all the same. Straight to Selfridges for celebratory champagne!

My appointment was at 8.00am I arrived at 7am there was a huuuuge line already!

My husband is visting for Christmas so he came along with me, I added him onto the access list months ago, but low and behold he wasn't on it and security said they wouldnt be able to let him in! I was so upset, so I spoke to a lady secutity member who called up the office when they opened at 8.00am and they put him on the list! Horay! I would advise if anyone is wanting to put their spouse on the access list to call up and make sure they are on the list before hand.

We went in and waiting for 30 minuets before my number came up my spouse and I went to a window with a very friendly man who took our documents, scanned my finger prints and did some small talk with my husband about life in the UK!

We then sat down for a further 45 minuets before we were called to a second window for my interview, the lady was also very nice and friendly and got me to do an oaf and... read complete review

TL;DR: Excellent experience at the US embassy in London, very painless. Long waits though.

My appointment was at 0800 on the 16th Dec, however I arrived late due to an accident causing queues on the M40 southbound. I arrived at 8:29. I thought I wasn't going to get in. However as I was queuing to get "checked in" outside the front of the embassy, a lady was walking down the line checking visa interview invitation letters. She saw mine was an "immigrant" one and sent me straight up to get checked in and seen straight away. PHEW
I then went through security (armed guards! eick!) which was much like airport security. Then I walked around the side of the building, went into reception, received an Argos-style ticket number.
Note: Immigrant ticket numbers start Ixxx, non immigrant is Nxxx.

After 1.5 hours of waiting, got called to a booth to hand over documents (birth certificate, 1 picture, police certificate, affidavit of support and pas... read complete review

Pretty similar to most other posters - I arrived an hour early but got bumped up the queue and sat down in the waiting area by 8:30 for a 9:00 appointment. Got called at 9:30 to go to a kiosk and give up my passport, police certificate, birth certificate, appointment letter, and Affidavit of Support. Everything was in order and I was told to go sit back down and wait to be called again. It was about 10:15 before I was seen again by a different agent. I swore to tell the truth and he asked me how my fiancee and I had met, what her family was like, what were our marriage plans were and so on. After a 5 minute conversation or so the agent told me the visa application was approved and I should get my passport back in the next 2 weeks. Overall a very painless experience.
