Review Topic: K1 Visa

My fiancee and I applied for the K1 visa on 20 August 2010. On 25 April 2011, she held the visa in her hand.

I am not going to write a dissertation of our experience. However, this forum helped us so I want to pay it forward. The process to get to the Juarez appointment is fairly the same and predictable. But once you get to the Juarez appointment stage...it is not stable nor predictable. Here are some key points:

The area around the consulate is safe. We stayed at the Holiday Inn and could walk to the medical center, consulate and restaurants without danger. We did not however venture out at night and it may be different after sundown.

On your way to the consulate area, there will be people who will approach you under the guise of helping. Do not accept it. These people are called coyotes for a reason.

The consulate website states that for a K-1 visa no appointment letter is necessary. That information has not been ... read complete review

Just so yall know: I think our particular experience was unique because we were one of the few that landed in Juarez in a time of transition and so a change that was supposed to be seamless created a crack that we fell into for a little while.

This is a long review because I want to tell our full story and also answer all the questions I had along the way.

Preface:
Like most of you we waited about an eternity from NOA1- NOA2. We decided to file when we found out we were pregnant and at that time had no doubt that we would be together in the US for the birth of our child. In the meantime we investigated every possible resource and prepared our "packet 3" in advance. During the wait a few of the forms expired and we redid them. We went to three different cities on the bus and got the "ancendentes no penales" and even rented a PO box in a neighboring city since the address we were living at had never seen a piece of mail come anywhere close. (A... read complete review

Process went very smooth, and the hotels are very knowledgeable if you have questions. Unfortunately it is one of the three busiest consulates in the world and it's in ciudad Juarez. So it takes time and there is not much to occupy your time. It's Safe....ish there. Take cabs from the hotel and airport only and done go out at night. You don't have to be scared but more over you don't have to be stupid either. There is a mall nearby, and who doesn't love Sanborns! Give yourself three maybe four days to do everything done. I bought a one way ticket for myself and my wife and waited till we were approved to buy my ticket home.javascript:emoticon('')

So I'm going to write a review to help all of those coming next since they changed the process, since a couple VJ friends helped me before...
After about a month after CDJ received our K-1 packet they sent the invitation letter. I got here here in the US about 2 weeks later (my MX fiance never got hers, so dont expect it to ever come in MX). Also, FYI you have to wait for the letter, you no longer can go to CDJ and have them print it out.
Now you have to schedule the following: 1) ASC appt 2)Visa Interview 3) DHL location you want visa sent to.

So I tried using the website but it is new and confusing and not really working, maybe in the future it will be better, but I used the phone for everything. I called 703-439-2313, dialed 2 for english, then 1, then 1 i think, etc, then one of the options in menu is "for k-1 visas only to pay MRV fee". I paid the fee ($350) over the phone w/ credit card on the automated system. *Warning, after you pay it reads off... read complete review
