Haven't gotten all the details from my fiance yet, but from what she tells me, it went well despite a few snags. We made a minor mistake on the I-129 and her G-325A about her city of birth. All along she thought she was born in one city, but upon looking at her birth certificate for the first time, she was actually born in another. She brought an updated copy of the i-129 and the G-325A and told the person collecting her paperwork about the mistake. Obviously this doesn't happen often and my fiance was made to wait a little longer than usual for the interview while the consulate sorted out the paperwork. During this part of the morning, my fiance was asked an amazingly frivolous question by the person collecting the paperwork — "Why did you make a mistake?"
Interview begins and my fiance suspects that her interviewer was new to the job, because he seemed preoccupied with paperwork, post-it notes, etc. He asks my fiance about our history and he seemed confused about ou... read complete review

Our experience at the Tokyo embassy was very smooth and pleasant.
We were not able to get written confirmation that I (USC) was allowed to attend with my fiancé, but because we had put in the interview request that I would attend (with my full name), this was enough to satisfy the police at the first checkpoint. I am pretty sure that if we didn't have that paper to show with my name on it, we would have had a problem. At the second checkpoint one of the staff was confused by my presence, but the other staff member clarified that for the K-1 visa interview the USC fiancé is allowed to attend, and we were allowed in without hassle.
We went with ~100 pages of documents and proof of relationship, etc. In the end, all we were asked to submit was:
- Passport
- 1 photo
- DS-160 confirmation page
- Certified Family Register (equivalent of birth certificate) with translation
- I-134 with supporting docs
- Police Certific... read complete review

Interview scheduled at 8:30 in the morning. Arrived before opening and was let in promptly at 8:00 AM.
Interview was 4 or 5 questions with immediately approval and visa/passport will be received within 5 days.

This is what I have understand from my finance.
Once you arrive, you take a number and most of the time, you are waiting.
They called her once to collect some papers including my letter of employment and other paperwork. Once that is finished, they told to wait some more.
Finally she was called for an interview. You are talking to the interviewer through a glass as if you are at a bank. She has asked very simple questions and the interviewer was able to speak both English and Japanese.

The whole process was very smooth and faster than I thought it would be. The people in Tokyo and Vermont (made one phone call to the NVC) were all very professional and helpful. From initial application to receipt of the visa was 9 months, but that includes an intentional delay of over two months for the birth of our second child. The hardest part of the experience was the initial research to figure out how the marriage visa system worked, and being prepared certainly paid off. VisaJourney was a huge help in that regard. Going into the process I feared the worst but in the end it all turned out okay.
