Consular Interview in Montreal, Canada

I arrived in Montreal the day prior. It started off a little bumpy, as there was some mechanical issue with the first Westjet plane at Toronto Pearson Airport so we had to disembark and board another flight to Montreal.

I took an Uber from Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport to my hotel at Residence Inn by Marriott (cost about $33 CAD). I chose this hotel because it was a 3-minute walk away from the US Consulate General. I also had “gold” membership status (thanks to my American Express which I obtained for immigration purposes) and received a free upgrade and a late check-out at 2 pm.

I arrived at my interview at 0915. My appointment time was 0930. As expected, I was turned away by the security guard. They would not allow me to wait out the time in the hallway because of the RBC security guard so I went over to Second Cup to pass the time because it was raining. I returne... read complete review

Here is a detailed review of my experience at the US Consulate:

My appointment time was at 9:30 am. I went around 9:25 am and was turned away by the security guard. The line was completely full.

I came back at 9:30 am and was permitted entry. The security guard let another lady in after me, she was turned away twice already and her appointment time was at 9:30am as well. We waited in line for around an hour.

The security guards were definitely off of their game. They were gossiping about other people who were present (there was an incident where a lady raised her voice because of the wait, they were gossiping about her.) Another lady went through the metal detector and the officer asked if she had a belt on, as she set it off. She said no, but she’s wearing an underwire bra. He rolled her eyes and scoffed- as if it was wrong of her to do so. She said sternly: “SORRY MY BOOBS ARE BIG.” I chuckled at that. They wer... read complete review

We arrived about 10 minutes early and the security guard allowed us in (others reportedly have had to wait until 5 minutes before their scheduled time). There is airport style security screening now. While our jackets were being scanned, a girl took our passports and put stickers on them. We were handed 2 number tags which were our call numbers once in the Consulate. Many people had wallets and purses, so maybe they are less strict about it with the security scan? We didn’t bring anything with as per previous instruction, so it wasn’t an issue.

We took the elevator to the 1st floor as instructed. We waited about 20 minutes until we got called to the first window. The children were able to go sit while I provided documents to the clerk. She did mine first, followed by the children. She scanned our passport photos and gave them back. She gave me back my CD of my chest X-ray. I was asked for hubby’s W2 (we didn’t have our 2019 return back yet).... read complete review

Everything went super smooth. Even though I'd read reviews saying they wouldn't let me in before my appointment time, I couldn't consciously not arrive 15min early, so after he told me to come back (as I expected) I had a juice across the street and came back with 2min to spare.

I was the first person with an 8am appointment admitted, but Americans kept coming in after me and I had to wait to go through security until they all went through because—as I heard the security guard say 10 times—"American's get to go first." Makes sense. It took 15min from when I entered to to get through security. They took my phone (turned off) and gave me a key to get it back. I took the elevator to the first floor as directed.

As I had the first number, as soon as walked off the elevator the security guard pointed me to the left towards window 5 where my number was displayed above it. The woman was so lovely and took all my forms. I was never given any laminate... read complete review
