Hi,
Just a quick review of my CR-1 journey over the last 2 weeks. I had my appointment on November 5th in Montreal. Nothing special to report, my experience seemed to be similar to that of all the others at MTL. Got in line at the consulate, went upstairs, showed my documents at the first window, had my "interview" 5 mins later at the second window, and was told I was approved after some pro-forma questions.
One thing that did strike me though was how unnecessary the whole interview process was. The questions I was asked were perfunctory, and the checking of documents seemed unnecessary given how much documentation I have sent USCIS/NVC over the last few months. I have actually gone through the entire Permanent Residence process in Canada too (5 years ago) and the Canadian process was much more efficient. No need for an in-person interview, they just asked for documents by mail, requested additional information if needed, and then asked for your passport by mail a... read complete review

Arrived by Via Train from Toronto on Sunday and checked into my hotel the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth. Talked to my husband for a couple of hours and then turned in for the night.
November 5th: Woke up and 530am, organized etc. and stopped at a bank just in case there were any further fees. Left the hotel at 71 and it as a brisk 10 minute walk northeast on Rene Levesque and turned left onto Rue St. Alexandre and joined the line. I became the 8th person in line. A very nippy morning indeed and I was thankful there was no rain. About 745am a guard finally let the first 6 people through. Then my group. A young lady asked to show the interview letter and the courier confirmation. And then I was asked to move to the right. Next I went up 3 steps and through a door to go threw a scanner similar to the airport only you didn’t have to take your shoes off.
**Of note: NO CELL PHONES, NO USB KEYS, NO CAMERAS, NO FLASHLIGHTS, NO LIGHTERS, NO BIG BAGS, BRIEF CASE OR ... read complete review

Everything went really well. They just asked me a few questions while my fiance and daughter waited for me, and at the end they told me I was approved. The questions were just mostly about information that had already been submitted at some point. It's basically to verify that everything is as we said it was. All the staff at the Consulate were really nice and helpful and we were happy with the process. It took about 1.5 hours (including all the time spent doing security checks, which is probably the most time consuming). Now hopefully I will get my passport back soon with the visa docs!

I took the train from Toronto to Montreal. This was a 7 hour train ride and dropped me within an 8 minute walk from the consulate. There are hotels in the area (Hilton, Marriott, etc...) so if spending the night, this is a very economical solution rather then driving up. Montreal is full of one-way streets and driving looked to be rather painful. If you've ever been to Toronto, picture that traffic and city layout...but all one way streets. Hamilton, ON but will a lot more traffic.
When you get to the consulate you're not allowed to bring any large bags or personal effects. I had all my paperwork in a binder to protect it from the elements and make it easier to carry. You will be sent thru a metal detector like an airport. You don't need to take off your shoes, but you need to remover your jackets and anything in your pockets. Security held my cigarettes and lighter in a bin while I was doing my interview and gave me a ticket to pick it up at the end of the inter... read complete review
