  3. Amusing :), really hope that you don't start new threads like this one will continue bragging about this non-sense request. So far I think you are the only one requesting for this "correction" :)

Obviously untrue, since VanessaTony said earlier that there have been other threads on this topic. That means multiple VJers other than myself have already requested that this false statement be corrected, and even more VJers will likely make the same request in the future - unless and until the truth prevails.
  4. The argument that changing the wording to "may or may not" will cause people not to track the date is obviously incorrect, because the reader is fully aware that there "may not" be a reminder letter. The consequences of not correcting the guide are that VJ loses a certain amount of credibility (due to flat-out lying), and threads like this one will continue to be generated unless and until VJ's error is corrected.

  5. According to this VJ Guide to Removal of Conditions... http://www.visajourney.com/content/751guide ...

    -----

You will NOT be sent any reminder to file this petition from USCIS. Per the USCIS,

"At the time you obtain conditional resident status through admission to the United States with an immigrant visa or through adjustment of status, the USCIS will notify you of the conditional basis of your status, the requirements for removal of the conditions and what will happen if you fail to file a petition to remove the conditions.

The USCIS does not send a second reminder to conditional residents to petition for removal of conditions. During the 90 days before the second anniversary of the date you obtained conditional resident status you and your spouse (if still married) must file to remove the condition."

    -----

This appears to have changed!! Just got a letter from USCIS today, "Notice of Requirement To File Joint Petition To Remove The Conditional Basis Of An Alien's Permanent Resident Status", saying...

    -----

"The records of this Service indicate that you entered the United States as a conditional permanent resident on 10/06/2011. In accordance with Section 216 of the Immigration and Nationality Act you must file Form I-751, Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence. Failure to do so may result in the automatic termination of your Status. You can obtain Form I-751, as well as filing information and fees, from www.uscis.gov or call 1-800-375-5283."

    Keeping L.A.'s Thai Town Thai

    by Elson Trinidad

    on September 13, 2012 2:52 PM

[...] Thai Town still faces some big challenges. In Historic Filipinotown just three miles away, the built environment is relatively lacking in the Philippine cultural aesthetic, yet the Filipino community makes an active presence through cultural events, churches, and community-based organizations. In contrast, Thai Town looks undeniably Thai, but its actual Thai population is only around three percent of a community comprised mostly of Latino and Armenian residents. Because most are recent immigrants, voter registration is low. And because most of them work long hours in low-wage jobs, there is also very low participation in community activities, much less time for social life. Major cultural institutions, like the nearest Buddhist temple, are some 12 miles away in North Hollywood. [...] The Thai alphabet might be ubiquitous around here, but land titles held by Thais aren't. Only two property parcels in Thai Town are Thai-owned, and more than several times has the local business community contemplated what Thai Town would be like if it were less Thai. So far, gentrification hasn't eroded the look or local culture of the community. But will it still be that way tomorrow? [...]

  7. No I wont waste anymore time on this with you. It was your origianl intent to inflame people with your post warning others not to even try to get a tourist visa from that horrible embassy in BKK. The same embassy your wife recieved a visa from. Thats the exact same staff that issues all visas byu the way. So the real problem is that in your case she was treated badly? Or you just want to serve as Chicken Little?

Your quote? from the newspaper in BKK fails to indentify the evil staff member. Why not post that persons name? Or you can take action against the embassy for what they supposedly did to someone you dont even know.

My review of the Bangkok Embassy gave it 5 stars (a perfect rating), and you can read that review here: http://www.visajourney.com/reviews/view-dos-cis-reviews.php?entry=8338

Also, I reprinted the Thai newspaper article in its entirety, and I provided a direct link to it as well. The Dutch citizen who wrote the letter probably did not know the name of the Embassy official behind the window. In fact, dozens of people on VJ (including myself) have described the notoriously strict female Embassy official who does K-1 and CR-1 visa interviews, yet to my knowledge absolutely no one on VJ has ever been able to identify her by name.

Note also that the title of this topic is "Thailand Embassy hostile?" - with a question mark - and the original post asked if anyone had a "similar or different" experience. The original intent was therefore to identify additional evidence that would either confirm or question the accuracy of the described experience.

Ning, you're entitled to your own opinion, but there are certain rules to be followed. Argue your position, whatever it might be, with facts and logic. False information (e.g., an impossibly large figure for the population of Thai Town) only hinders the process of debate and discredits the person who provides it. And while you are fully entitled to your own opinion, it's not at all appropriate to try to put your own words into other people's mouths. These simple rules help to ensure fair and honest debate.

  8. This source (city-data.com) indicates that the population of Thai Town is even lower, at only 5,397: http://www.city-data.com/neighborhood/Thai-Town-Los-Angeles-CA.html

And if you scroll down to the pie chart "Races in Thai Town in Los Angeles, CA" - Thai Town is about 40% White, 40% Hispanic, 10% Asian, 5% Black, and 5% Biracial. So the Asian-origin population of Thai Town is only about 540 people.

Your text above appears to have come from Wikipedia, which is not considered a reliable source in and of itself because literally anyone can edit it at any time, inserting any text or numbers they wish. The Wikipedia article only cites a 2004 US Dept of Commerce report for its figure of 80,000 Thais in Los Angeles (as a whole) and it makes no attempt to provide any specific number with respect to the population of Thai Town (which is a very small neighborhood within the very large city of Los Angeles).

Your quoted figure of 250,000 Thais in Thai Town appears to be, quite frankly, preposterous. The modest number of residential housing units available within the Thai Town neighborhood could not possibly be sufficient to support this completely unrealistic, wildly inflated, alleged number of residents.

  9. I will provide this so you can see there is a variation in the figures. Its the govenment that as said there are 2 to 3 million illegals in New York for example. In that report they have lost a million or so.

Los Angeles has the largest Thai population outside of Thailand. Roughly 80,000 of California's estimated 120,000 Thai Americans live in Los Angeles It is also home to the world's first and only Thai Town. In 2002 there was an estimated 80,000 Thai immigrants living in Los Angeles. Thai Chinese are also included in the population. Because of this, Los Angeles is sometimes referred to as Thailand's 78th province.

I understand that you are claiming higher numbers, but can you provide links to reliable sources for those numbers?

  10. That is correct but it only applies to legitimate tourists. You forgot the other side of the coin, illegal immigrants cost even more tax payer's money and jobs. They will not take that risk and issue visa easily unless they are convinced that the applicant does not impose an immigration threat. The USA does not and will not hand out as many tourist visa as possible as if they were tissue paper.

Firstly, note that I said "unless there is a genuine threat somehow" - that would include an "immigration threat".

Secondly, how exactly does being on vacation and married to a citizen of The Netherlands make this Thai wife into "an immigration threat"?

  11. I am married to a USC. I also applied 3 times for a tourist visa & was denied each time. At no time did the staff there ever say anything even close to what this artical says. The staff there were very professional. The last time I applied my husband asked what the problem was. They carefully explained that a person married to a USC would never be issued a tourist visa because of the strongest ties rule. Those ties are to the USC as soon as she enters the USA & for that reason any ties to Thailand become irrelevent.

We realised they were right & decided to change our plans to visit to obtaining immigrant visas for myself & our daugher. I am so happy they forced us to do this because we will soon become citizens & never have to deal with any of this again.

Keep in mind these stories are written by Thais who may be trying to inflame the gullible public. I dont believe this incident ever happened.

As I read this, it seems to have been written by a citizen of The Netherlands who is married to a Thai woman. His Thai wife has a sister who lives in Hawaii and is married to a US citizen. They only wanted to visit her sister in Hawaii and enjoy a nice Hawaiian vacation. He easily obtained a tourist visa for his Thai wife when travelling back to The Netherlands, but was apparently treated quite differently when trying to get a tourist visa to USA. As the holder of a Dutch passport, he benefits from the Visa Waiver Program and so he does not need a visa - but his wife has a Thai passport, so she does have to get a visa in order to visit the United States.

  12. Until a few years ago I would have some sympathy. But being on this site you realise how many scammers are around, and seeing one after the other, day after day, must have a jading effect.

Tourism creates jobs - American hotels, restaurants, etc. need those tourist dollars, especially in this bad economy. Unless there is a genuine threat somehow (no tourist visas for terorists, etc.), it's in the American interest to issue as many tourist visas as possible. US Embassy officials get paid to faithfully represent the interests of the United States.

  13. I am so sorry to hear that. I had hoped your wife countered that, when, she was asked. I have read some interview experiences here at the US Embassy, which was similar to your wife's situation. She was asked "Is your husband too OLD for you?", she smartly responded (for me it was), "maybe, for you, but not for me, because he does many things that ssa lot of younger people do, such as sports, hiking and stuff" I was very impressed. His husband trained her wife to counter these kinds of questions prior to the interview. Perhaps, you should do it, too.

It wasn't me - my wife got her CR-1 visa already, in September 2011 - I'm only quoting a letter to the editor that was recently printed in the Thai newspaper "The Nation" (the other major daily paper is the "Bangkok Post").

  14. Below is a recent letter to the editor of a major Thailand daily newspaper... has anyone had a similar or a different experience?

Applying for US visa was not pleasant

    January 30, 2012 1:00 am

I'd like to share this experience with you.

I have been trying to get a tourist visa to the United States for my Thai spouse.

I thought it would be more or less the same procedure as for a Schengen visa, which we had applied for successfully three times already.

On Wednesday my wife had her interview. The American interviewer asked her why she'd married an old guy.

Before she could say a word, he himself answered, "Because of the money".

Then he asked her why she wanted to visit his country. She said, for a holiday with her husband and to visit her sister, who is married to an American guy and lives in Hawaii.

Then he said, "All young Thai ladies marry older men only for the money" and he denied her request for a visa.

Our experience with the embassy of the Netherlands in Bangkok could not have been more different. There they are polite, not discriminating, helpful, understanding and pleasant. And I could wait inside when my wife had the interview, instead of having to wait outside on Wireless Road in the US visa case.

I'd like to warn everybody living with a Thai spouse not to waste his time and money trying to get a tourist visa from the US embassy in Bangkok.

The American staff there look down on women. They should know that many, many Thai women lead happy lives married to foreigners.

  15. depends on how the DS-230 was filled out and if it was checked to have the SSN applied for.

We did check the DS-230 box, but simply checking the DS-230 box and waiting results in a rather long wait. Therefore we took steps to hasten the process along, as described here: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/334804-how-to-quickly-get-your-ssn/ The physical Social Security card arrived in the mail yesterday, exactly 2 weeks after Port of Entry!

  16. CR-1 visa - Within 2 hours of arrival in Fort Lauderdale on Friday October 7th 2011, we were at the Social Security Field Office applying for a Social Security card. They said that USCIS had not yet sent our data to the Social Security system's computers and that it would take a few days. We returned to the Social Security Field Office on Thursday October 13 & again presented our completed application for a Social Security card. They said that as of the day before (Wednesday October 12) we had an application pending for a Social Security card (because we checked off box 33a on the NVC's DS-230 form). The field officer opened up that application and started working on it, typing in the information we provided on the completed application form we had just given her. After entering all that data, the field officer submitted our pending application to the system. The system responded that our application was now verified and approved. The field officer then gave us a form saying that the Social Security card would arrive in the mail within two weeks. We need the number ASAP, but the form that the field officer gave us says that they won't give the number out over the phone. So we visited the Social Security Field Office again on Tuesday October 18th, to ask them in person to just tell us what the number is! This succeeded - we were given another form with the Social Security Number printed on it. The field officer who gave us this second form also said that once the application is verified, the actual SSN is assigned within 24 hours. Therefore, we could actually have gotten the SSN on Friday October 14th - exactly ONE WEEK after arriving in USA. And if our first visit had been a day earlier, we would have gotten the SSN within SIX DAYS of arrival in USA!

So to recap, here is the timeline for getting your Social Security Card as quickly as possible!

    1) Check box 33a on NVC's DS-230 form to send your info to the Social Security Administration.

    2) Enter USA via your Port of Entry - this is day 0.

    3) On day 5, visit your local Social Security Field Office to apply for your Social Security Card. Field officer will open your USCIS-filed application for a SSN, enter the data from your form, and submit your completed application. Your application will then become Completed and Verified. You will receive a form saying that your Social Security card will arrive in a few weeks.

    4) On day 6, visit your local Social Security Field Office to ask them to give you your Social Security Number.
