  1. Atari- I'll say it again- he uses ganja for religious reasons. He was born and raised a Rastafarian. He is tremendously disciplined (works nearly 12 hour days, 7 days a week,) a business owner, and a respected member of his community. Please withhold judgement about the quality of his moral character. This is the man I love, you hear? ;)

Hehe yes, I hear, and I know a few rastafarians and many "observant rastafarians" ;) I hope you read my post in the positive light intended. I also hope that your guy is going to take care not to become a martyr of sorts, before you two can be together!

  2. Has anyone ever gotten an expedited biometrics appointment? Something came up with my family back in Germany and it would be really important for me to travel overseas within the next 2 weeks. My package arrived in Vermont on Friday (6/13) and I would like to call USCIS next week and request an expedite to get my biometrics done before flying (obviously, if this isn't possible I won't leave the country but I'm trying everything I can to be able to go).

Two things: I'm certain I read somewhere that as long as you have your NOA1, you are all good to travel outside the US. I'll look for that now.

Secondly, there is a thread on which offices are known to be cool with early walk-ins, though the consensus seems to be that an early biometrics has no impact on the speed of completion of the process.

I'll look for those things now and update this post.

Update 1: That letter extends your status for one year while you're being processed and if you read it, it okays work and travel.

Update 2: Sorry if I'm missing the point and saying things you already know, but you should keep the receipt with your green card as you travel.

  3. I just have a hard time accepting that our military men and women wait for not days or weeks but months for just an appointment to see a doctor. And they are refused basic needs.

But it's not as though "if but for immigrant costs, we would have enough money to care for our wounded vets". Our government wastes a staggering amount of money that could put to better use, and our treatment of wounded veterans is a scandal that stretches back to the time of George Washington. The two are not connected. And if we permanently closed the borders tomorrow, or threw them wide open, or if we found out the moon was made of gold, none of this would change how vets are treated. And that needs to change.

OP I hope your wife gets reunited with her loved ones, sooner rather than later.

  4. There are definitely legal rules of thumb these situations. The part about "working for free" is irrelevant. I'm not an attorney but I've been in and around employers and immigrants investigating possibilities: You can't even be an unpaid intern or a volunteer at a company. Why? The reasoning behind those laws is that a foreign volunteer is taking a job (or an opportunity) away from a legal worker. I think bona fide charitable organization volunteering is all you're allowed to do.

I can also attest to CBP being total dicks. I'm also not here to judge you. And of course, I defer to the sage wisdom of others here. But at this point, you must seek professional legal help IMO, to really know your possible avenues.

  6. Welcome, Dustin. And hello to all.

UK Fan I have not received anything yet. I think we can't track the case until we get biometrics letter. I am not sure if they enter info from the i-765 or if we connect it all once we get the Biometrics.

Oh, reading your message below, I see what you mean. I though you had your NOA already.

  7. And another thing: I know for a fact that in San Francisco, at least, most landlords don't check with the credit report agencies. They check with an agency that reports based on the person as a potential tenant, that's credit rating plus any evictions on record, etc. If she gets a Social Security number ASAP, who is to say that she'll be denied? She may have no established credit, but she'll have a blank slate, i.e., no bad credit, and no evictions on record. Protip: And she can go to a credit union and set up a checking account and get a secured credit card (that's a credit card where you back it with a cash deposit). Most credit unions do not report these as secured.

  8. Also, I never mentioned it to the landlord (property management company), and now it's like "why didn't you ever tell us in the first place?" which of course I should have, but I was afraid of it.

You're under no obligation to tell anyone that you fell in love and decided you want to live with someone. Whether you can do it at the place you rent is another story. You should definitely have someone review your lease and your rights, so that you know exactly what they are, and exactly all the different ways this can play out.

  9. Tenant rights vary from state to state and even city to city. There are probably low-cost/no-cost tenant rights organizations in a progressive city like Portland. So one thing you should look into now is what exactly your rights are.

Consider also, you might be surprised at how human people can be, if you go and talk to them. If you deal directly with the landlord, call this person or go to their office and explain that you're getting married. If you deal with a property management company, or building manager, that may be tougher, but if it's like San Francisco odds are you are talking to an immigrant or someone with close friends and family who are immigrants. Much will depend on your existing relationship with them.

I'm sure people violate their leases all the time. And I don't know your "visa journey" but usually, evidence of co-habitation is something USCIS really wants to see, so think of this is a difficult but necessary thing to deal with.

  10. Adding my NOA1

The letter is a little confusing as to biometrics. But we'll receive a separate notice regarding biometrics, right?
