  1. Hey all...

    Cari

Hmmm.... this sounds like it is a must-do for me and the hubby.... However, I only know Manhattan. If I come in from CT to Grand Central..... best bet is subway to BK, right?? Like the number 4??

  2. No, they can't do that. It's against Fair Housing Laws.
    Fair Housing Act

Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act), as amended, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents of legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and handicap (disability). More on the Fair Housing Act

    more here

They cannot discriminate based on familial status. It's against the law.....

Also, this has nothing to do with K3/cr1 applicants...it's chalk and cheese, basically....

It's not against the law to sell or to rent to them. Just for them to Co-habitate. Unfortunately, fair housing law is irrelevant, as its not the transaction that is illegal. It's the residents, not the renters that are the violators. If they were living in their van, it still would be against the law.

However, I couldn't agree with you more on the "Chalk and cheese" portion of your statement!!!

  3. Believe it or not, this law is on the books in a LOT of towns. The town where I went to school (not in the deep south) wouldn't allow for fraternity or sorority houses to exist, as there was a similar law about unrelated people sharing a private home. The reason it was devised and existed in the past to try to deter the existence of houses of prostitution. However, its a completely outdated law, and this example is a huge abuse of it.

  4. Melissa -

My thoughts are with you. Don't dwell on it more than neccessary; through yourself into planning the biggest, frilliest, floweriest, rhinestoniest princess wedding you can. Time will pass before you know it.

Just a quick observation - I'm assuming Legal Net emailed Laurel back, and that's how you found out? How long did they know it was denied, and let you sit here in limbo waiting? Were they ever going to TELL you without you having to make inquiries, etc?

  5. So, I'm completely fed up with my job. I work as a claims adjuster for a rapidly growing auto insurance carrier. The lousy part is that our staff isn't growing. We get more work and tougher standards/benchmarks we need to reach, all the while the company is writing new business with worse and worse risks (i.e., bad drivers, people who get insurance, then have an accident and "disappear" so we can't do our jobs, etc.). On top of that, it is a half hour drive from where I live, and gas here is expensive, and my little low $42,000 job is not cutting it at the moment.

There is essentially the same job here in town. I sent in a resume Friday night and got a call this morning for an interview on Wednesday. I have several friends who work there, and am hopeful I get offered something... However, my closest friend who works there told me she only makes $41,600, which is less than what I get now. That being said, I know she didn't ASK for what I intend to ask for either... and I think I am slightly more marketable as I also can appraise vehicle damage in addition to negotiating both property and bodily injury claims.

I'm a bit nervous as several people I work with NOW used to work at the place I'm interviewing, and in my business, the rumor mill works overtime. EVERYONE knows someone at any other given company. Just today my friend who works at the place I'm interviewing was ALREADY approached by a mutual former co-worker to see if I had applied.

Just hope my boss doesn't find out until (if) I get an offer.

So, anyway, wish me luck. For the interview and for some stealthness, lol.

  6. Rosie made a pretty nasty comment about Star Jones at one point.... Was on all those cheesey tabloid TV shows... Something about why she doesn't just admit she got her stomach stapled, she can talk about all her other plastic surgeries, etc. It will be interesting to see, as I don't think there's any love lost between those two at all. I'm kind of thinking maybe they selected Rosie to try to force Star Jones off, as she and Joy Behar are bickering all the time.

Then again, I don't watch the show, it's on when I'm at work, and don't really care too much.

  7. Ok we finally got to watch the show, IMHO we think the bottom 3 will be:

    Kellie

    Paris

    Ace or Elliot

And we think Kellie should go, but sadly Elliot might as he just don't seem to click with people. Ace did ok and Simon praised him and most of the time the voters go with Simon.

Yeah, I'm with you.... What IS Pickler still doing there?!?!?

    :P:P:P

soooo not a fan of her.

  8. Whoohooo!! We're in luck!!

If you have Comcast, there is a channel called TVG - I'm sure it's on other cable systems as well...

They will, for the first time, be airing the Grand National live!!!!!

    11:15 Eastern Time.

  9. Shades of the hot coffee spillage suit against McDonald's!

Oh, and also that the jury decided that the woman was 20% at fault, so she got 20% less.

I bet most people don't know that if you sue someone, the jury decides how much of the fault belongs to whom, and your award is reduced by the amount of fault that is yours.

Actually, this depends on the negligence laws in your state.... Some states still have contributory negligence laws, which means even if you are 1% at fault, you are barred from recovery.

Others have modified comparative negligence, which bars you at 50 or 51% negligence.

Additionally, only special and general damages are reduced by your percentage of fault. Punitive damages are not pro-rated.

    As for the OP's post....

There is something called "Attractive nuisance" which would imply there is definitely liability for the land owner.

"Under the attractive nuisance doctrine of the law of torts, a landowner may be held liable for injuries to children trespassing on the land if the injury is caused by a hazardous object or condition on the land that is likely to attract children, who are unable to appreciate the risk posed by the object or condition. The doctrine has been applied to hold landowners liable for injuries caused by abandoned cars, piles of lumber or sand, and swimming pools."

As a claims adjuster, I see (and pay for) stupidity ALL the time!!!!!!

  10. So, my husband is a little desperate. This is the first year he can remember that he hasn't watched the Grand National horse race in April. We've contacted the local casinos, who have a racebook, and they don't show it. Someone told us Fox Sports Channel airs it, but we don't get the channel. We found that we can hear it on BBC radio online.... but have yet to find anywhere he can SEE it....

Just curious if anyone knows of a site that shows the race live....

Oh, and is this race REALLY a big deal across the pond, or is he just being difficult?!?

    Thanks!

  11. [

I'm not wearing my engagement and wedding ring. This is the ring I was wearing. I'd be an extremely lucky woman to have a real diamond ring like this. In fact it's silver and cubic zirconia and was purchased in England for 10 pounds before i ever knew my ex. As you well know I had to porn my rings last August to buy food. Never got them them back as i didn't have the money. This is old news "sigh". I hope i satifised your curiosity. and thanks for the good wishes !!!!!

    Shona

    "PORN" em, eh?

wow, times MUST be tough!! :P:P;)

    Just kidding.

Glad to see you enjoyed your day!

  12. He's sooooo annoying - his songs are nice but jeez this guy is such a wimpy rich boy!!! He's ridiculed over here on Radio One!!! Roshon really likes him though he always listens to him!

LOL..... Yeah, we call him "James Bland"....

  13. I'm not sure whether I agree with this or not. Names is one thing, but home addresses being linked like that bothers me, hugely.

Yes, I too have issue with this. The issue is that these stay on someone's record FOREVER, as does their photo. So, for example, an 18 year old boy who has sex with his 16 year old girlfriend (in certain states), and her parents press charges has his photo up there for the rest of his life as a registered sex offender. Granted, this is one isolated example, but we, the people looking up our address, just don't know enough. When I was a kid, we went door to door selling chocolate bars for school without the benefit of a "photo registry". Most of us turned out okay. Sadly, some in this country did not. However, it wasn't just "registered sex offenders" doing the harm. I strongly feel that dangerous people should be imprisoned for a LONG LONG time. However, the system says these individuals are free to live amongst us; They did the crime, the "paid their time". So, why post their address...

  14. ET, as usual, I couldn't agree with you more.

It seems as if this administration's strongest tactic has just come to bite them in the butt. For years, this administration has used the "scare em" tactic to keep their base, so to speak. There were studies done prior to the last election, in which college students were asked who they preferred, Bush or Kerry. Those who answered the survey based on news clips of economy, etc., largely favored Kerry. The group that were showed news clips of bombings, terrorists being found in US, etc., favored Bush. Note that NONE of the news clips featured either candidate.

After 9/11, Bush used this scare tactic into justifying war with Iraq. At one point, HALF of Americans believed that the 9/11 pilots were FROM Iraq. This administration did everything it could to make as many people it could "on alert" and suspicious of anyone one with brown skin and a beard. Does anyone remember the four Middle Eastern men in a diner down south one night, one of whom had the AUDACITY to utter the phrase "How much do you think it will take to bring it down"? Sure, they were talking about transporting a car from up north to Florida, where they were heading to complete there medical school, but who cares? The waitress, who obviously was up on her Bush-administration rhetoric, called the police and told them all about the brown skinned men who were discussing how much dynamite it would take to blow up a building. If I recall, she was hailed as a hero ( or "patriot" in what has become the biggest misuse of the true meaning of a word I can remember) by many.

Well, now we have this port deal. While it may be "no big deal" as the administration is wanting us to believe, it goes against everything we have heard from them, either directly or implied, for years. Now all of a sudden, we are supposed to blindly believe that these brown skinned men with beards that we were encouraged to treat with suspicion are our "friends". This puts certain Rep. congresspeople in a tough bind, seeing as they took this fear mentality back to their constituents as justification for their support of the war. They continued the villification of the brown skinned men with beards. Bush doesn't have a re-election in 9 months; many of them do.

Anyway, you reap what you sow, I guess. Will be fun watching this new round of finger-pointing.

  15. Could be because no one is reading it in the original Aramaic? Check your bible publishing history. The list of changes, "interpretations" and flat out errors is astounding. Also somewhat frightening considering how many people are reading it today and thinking it's accurate to the original.

To say nothing of the books that were edited/voted out.

"Revelations" only squeezed its way in by ONE vote. Imagine how different things would be today.......
