  1. I assume he is talking about the evidence papers!!! If you type the number on the first page the numbers are not going to "magically" appear on all the papers you submit??????????

No, he's talking about the N-400 papers. When you download the N-400 papers in pdf format, and fill them out on your computer (which I suggest you do) and you type in your alien registration #, then automatically all A-#'s in the whole N-400 document get filled in. That's the "magic" Bob refers to.

  2. Update your Driver's License or state ID - tell them you are a citizen - they will probably want to see your certificate in person :)

I would say, go for your passport first. After that you can use your passport for all other things you need to do and put the certificate in a safe place. No need to use that for anything else. Losing the certificate would cost you $400+, not worth it the trouble.

  4. I have dual citizenship of Romania and the US. I recently got married in Romania, and I have no idea how to change my name here in the States on all my documents. The marriage certificate does not need to be translated (it is in English as well). I read you have to have certified copies, but the little town I got married in doesn't even make certified copies. I can't send the original everywhere...

I also think, even though the paper is translated, that you need an apostille with it to make it official. I'm also not sure they will accept the Romanian translation of the document. It might be that you have to let it translate by an official Romanian/English translator here in the US. Shouldn't be that much of a problem.

  5. You bring the original with you to the SSN office to the DMV etc. You show them it and then they can make a copy if they need it. Most places will accept a colour copy as long as they can see the seal or stamp clearly.

What I would do is make several notarized copies. It's official and most banks do it for free. Go with the original paper and the copies to a bank and ask them to notarize it for you. With the original as a control point I don't think there will be a problem.

  6. By the way, after checking my case status online... it now says that I'm at the "RFE" stage.

"On November 18, 2010, we mailed a notice requesting additional evidence or information in this case N400 APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION. Please follow the instructions on the notice to submit the requested information. This case will be in suspense until we receive the evidence or the opportunity to submit it expires. Once we receive the requested evidence or information and make a decision on the case, you will be notified by mail."

    So...

Can I go for fingerprints now? :)

Why the rush... just wait for your letter. FP won't speed up the process but you need to have them done. It is a part of the background investigation of the FBI. You need the stamp on that paper when you get out. It's the only prove you have been there. You don't want to pay another $80 when something goes wrong. RFE on your status, most of the time, is FP but you can't be 100% sure, so you'll have to wait. Patience, patience, patience... the USCIS is the perfect organization to teach you the value of this virtue.

  7. Looks good, but tax returns are not needed if filing based on a 5 year. I sent my package similar to yours with the exception of the taxt returns.

Mmm... probably, but it won't hurt the case either. Better too much as too little. Sometimes they just want to know whether you paid your taxes on a regular basis.

  8. Yes, they do allow it. But in our case there was no time benefit to us, the still sat on the case for three months after fingerprinting.

I agree. FP's are FBI actions and are a part of the background checking. They have nothing to do with the USCIS processing speed of your file. It will not speed up the process. Most offices you can walk in but there is a change you get refused when too busy and that you made the trip for nothing. When possible, I would just follow the guide lines as put on the paper and I wouldn't create unnecessary waves.

  9. Why do we need to change SSN or go to DMV??? We already got an SSN and an ID for DMV.

John, I don't know how it is with you but on my Drivers License is written, in red, Temp Immigrant Status and the expiration date is beginning next year. Also for your SSN you're registered as an immigrant. They will not change your SSN but your status from immigrant to citizen. This is important when somebody checks your status... your employer, the government, etc...

  10. I'm tired of people who make such "mistakes." If you bother to read this thread from the beginning, you will see that this happened before, more than once. We cannot check this list every morning to make sure somebody else didn't make a mistake and f*cked up the list by being careless . . . again. Don't make mistakes, double check that you don't make a mistake before altering the list. If you don't understand these very simple instructions, stay away.

  11. hudons: the UK is a lovely country and you need do nothing :-)

Each country has its own citizenship laws and some bar the retention of their citizenship if a person becomes a naturalized U.S. citizen. Before 1948, a Briton could lose his British citizenship by becoming a naturalized citizen of another country. The British Nationality Act of 1948 eliminated restrictions on holding dual citizenship. So there is absolutely no problem.

  12. Thank you! We're now trying to decide whether to wait a few days to do the SSN (at the ceremony they said wait a few days before going) or send for the passport immediately...Will probably stick around until all that and the OCI card from India is done!

You're probably right. It's not going to run away. Now you can enjoy a more relaxing time... there is no rush or worries anymore about things going wrong.

Unlike a GC they can't take away your citizenship anymore. That gives one peace of mind.

  13. Yes it is official! Hubby is a real American Citizen as of November 15, 2010.

Congratulations !!! We started off at about the same date and you made it a week earlier :bonk: Just kidding...

Thanks for sharing ELW.. it was fun having you around... keep on posting. People here can use your help... Good luck with everything else in the future.

    Carl.

  14. so i got naturalized last nov, 9, 2010 at fairfax, VA

applied for name change at social security office Arlington, VA on nov. 12, 2010 in the morning (fairly fast process that lasted 16 mins since i walked in)

and then filed for passport on 1 Pm nov. 12, 2010.

I applied for a passport at a passport agency in washington, DC and they said i could pick it up monday but no one was gonna drive me, so i opted to have it mailed. just got it today along with my naturalization certificate, and some pamphlet for passport services -information card :)

    Congratulations and thanks for sharing!

  15. Hello everybody, I have 2 questions for everybody who can answer me this. I have my fingerprints on April 14th in Philadelphia, PA. My question is this: I think there are people who can get advanced that date; I've seen that the people showed up 1 week before to enter to the Biometrics appointment in different cities around the U.S., is that easy or is that possible to do it in Philadelphia at Drummond place? I would like to try to advance that week if possible, I don't know if that is possible and hurry up a little bit my process. Now, I have other question, how is the the N-400 naturalization interview in Philadelphia, The most of the officer are tough, rude or any comment about the naturalization interviews in Philadelphia? Thanks and bye,

The best thing you can do is do a search on the top right of this page, then you get information like this or google for it by putting in N-400 interview philadelphia. A lot of people use timeline... this is an example.

    Good luck.

  16. I am officially a U.S. citizen.... I have even applied for a passport - $225 to have it expedited is a ridiculous price, by the way!

Good luck to you all...sooner or later the journey will be over for all of us who write in this forum.

Byyyeee and thanks for your help!

Congratulations !!! My journey hopefully will be over in 9 days... woohoo

  17. Yes , I have read that form thank you but still I don't get it.

We have been married 4 1/2 years ....

    ok so April 2008 + 3 years = April 2011

so Time frame to send the application between Feb and Apr 2011 Right?

    Thanks ;-)

You have to look at the the date on your GC. That's what counts. Once you have that date, you have two options. You go for the 3 year or the 5 year time frame to file your N400. When you opt to wait for 5 yrs. than it doesn't matter whether you're married or not. The 3 year time frame is only possible if married for at least 3 years to the same person, live together and will still be married at the day of your interview.

You can file your N400 - 90 days prior to the date mentioned on your GC. THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS 3 MONTHS!!! Be careful with that.

  18. There are many parts of my anatomy that are foul - I suppose my footsteps are, but no more so than a Utah truck driver's underpants - so I think we were unfairly singled out and the first White House needed us to burn it down and this one is much better.

Actually all that stuff used to make me cringe but I have researched the UK ceremony on youtube and looked at the UK National anthem's verses and it is equally treacley and violent respectively. I wish they would sing about health care and education for all instead of kill all the foreigners - but that form of patriotism will take a few hundred more years I estimate.

Its time the Brits and the Americans re-wrote their national anthems so they were more Patriotic and about 'togetherness' and less violent.

    Exhibit A

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore

That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,

A home and a country should leave us no more!

Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.

No refuge could save the hireling and slave

From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:

And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

    Exhibit B

    O lord God arise,

    Scatter our enemies,

    And make them fall!

    Confound their knavish tricks,

    Confuse their politics,

On you our hopes we fix,

    God save the Queen!

    Exhibit C

    Imagine there's no countries

    It isn't hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

    And no religion too

    Imagine all the people

    Living life in peace

    yeah lets go for C

LOL... you'll become an excellent citizen. The US may consider themselves lucky to get you. One advice though... try not to end up like John...

  19. yippee got oath letter

    December 2 at 4pm !

30 miles away at a performing arts center - may have to sing about washing the foul blood of the English off the land of America etc (star spangled banner)

How embarrassing..4 pm is good coz her indoors can just take a half day off to watch as I foreswear cheshire cheese and haddock and pork pies with hp sauce and all the desire I had to die for Prince Charles.

Please add my date... ta !

phew , phew and double phew ! No more letters from USCIS. No more waiting by the mailbox. After 6 years of it I am going to miss it - NOT !!!

Come on, Alan... you have to agree... it is a bit foul... ask the french...

  20. Hello All,

I am going to try to be very brief. I married my college sweet heart 4 years ago and we were happily married since. I received my permanent residency through her. I currently hold a 10 years unconditional green card that I received last year. 2 weeks ago I found out that she was having an affair to which she confessed to when I confronted her. I am considering divorce. However, I am worried that it will effect my citizenship when I do apply for it. I am not planning to apply for it now since our marriage broke apart. However, I will be applying after the 5 years mark.

    1. Should I be worried that they may decline my citizenship? Will they ask me why am I no longer married during my oath?

    2.What hurdles should i anticipate?

    3. Can her family to get back at me coach her to lie in court that I "used" her for a green card? (Highly unlikely but I would like to be prepared)

I am devastated that my wife was unfaithful to me, and worrying about whether or not I will be able to stay in this country is adding to my stress and grief. I would appreciate a straight forward answer on this. Thank you in advance!

    Sincerely,

    A distressed husband

No, not a problem at all.... you started your marriage in good faith. That it ends... well, that happens to the best families. All that counts was the intention of why you got married but since you already passed that stage and want to apply after the 5 year mark, there is no problem at all. Just go for it. Your marriage has nothing to do with all this. You will be asked but the USCIS doesn't care, for them it's just information they want to add to your file.

  21. Wisconsin is a weird state, understand you can get married and divorce at the same place and the same day in Las Vegas. Since I am a resident of Wisconsin, was required by law to get a marriage license in my county. Never figured out what would happen if I did marry another Wisconsinite in another county, she would have to get our marriage license in her county as well. Does that mean we have to get two marriage licenses? Never figured that out. Besides that, we had to wait ten business days after we applied for the license to get married for them to make background checks, USCIS was also making background checks, we have been checked out.

Since my wife is from a foreign country we didn't have different county problems, but were free to marry wherever we pleased, provided they recognized a Wisconsin marriage license. Of course we all realize with the USCIS, we have deadlines for getting married, if you don't, your intended spouse is shipped back. In those ten days was able to find a federal judge to marry us, he was so honored, refuse to even take a dime from us, even for his favorite charity, it was a very nice wedding, we had our reception two days later, but spent our honeymoon filling out USCIS forms. But we were so happy to be together, ha, still are.

Then the problem you may run into whether different countries even recognize that marriage, heck, you can get married again if you have too.

Wisconsin also has weird weather, darn near froze here in September, today, enjoying a beautiful 60 degree day.

I have a couple of friends in Wisconsin. One not so far from Madison, the other one 5 to 6 hours further to the Michigan border. They both can tell me the joy of the winters over there. Especially last winter seems to have been fun. I didn't realize this about the Wisconsin laws. My friend, close to the Michigan border, is married to a Native American. How does this work? Seems that the Indians have their own laws....

I ones had to drive to my friend at the Michigan border, to pick up a dog, we bought. Very interesting drive. When coming from the East Coast, everything seems to slow down starting half way PA. In Ohio, you see cops on the highway, checking on speed, every mile or so. You wonder why. Once in Indiana nobody cares anymore. Then of course you feel the city life of Chicago again. Everything speeds up. Entering Wisconsin.... zzzzzzzzz.... slow again and again for hours. Close to my friend, I had to pass a long sand path through the woods. Nothing to see, and the path didn't stop, it kept on going straight for 7 mile. No cell zones, no cars, no people, nothing. The GPS only shows a tin line between a lot of green. We were joking about the possible bears, when the car would break down and what to do then. At the end of that path, all of a sudden, Indian Territory. I didn't know what to expect but it was all very American, LOL... yellow school buses and everything else included. Very nice people.
