  1. Since you are filing a K1, you should not get married until after your fiance arrives in the US and you have 90 days to do so from the date of entry.

You can have a Dam Hoi (engagement party) in Vietnam with your family and friends. This is very common in Vietnamese culture and there are situations where NOT having a Dam Hoi can cause some issues/delays with HCMC. Meaning, they might ask your fiance at the interview why you did not follow the cultural norm and not have a Dam Hoi if you choose not to have one. You can read some of the old threads on this.

For my case, we did not have a Dam Hoi but were still able to recieve a pink.

    Good luck to you both.

  2. Dear All,

My wife came here from Vietnam on a K1 visa. We married and she now has a 2 year GG (permanent resident). My understanding is that 90 days before GG expiration, we can apply for the 10yr GG. However, I checked the Guides for GG renewal and it talks about renewing a 10 yr GG and the notes state renewal for "conditional resident". Her GG says Permanent Resident not conditional resident.

Could someone advise on the next steps/forms for 2 yr GG to renew to 10 yr GG?

In addition, I heard she can apply for the US Citizenship after a total of 3 years on the US.

    Thanks in advance.

    Sorry. typo. GG is GC

  4. I would recommend take more time to get to know each other and make at least one or more trips to Vietnam. The consulate in HCMC is very strict and you both basically have to do everything possible to prove your relationship is real. That means going above and beyond what is required by USCIS. Try to read as much as possible on the older threads in this forum and check out the different red flags that other members have faced. This will help you both avoid any delays. There are also some senior members in this forum that can provide you with really good insight.

Also, try to save everything. Receipts from hotels together, airplane stubs, visas, photos, chat logs, emails, letters, phone cards, etc.

My wife and I did not have a Dam Hoi but this has been a red flag for many other members so if you choose not to do so, you should be prepared for a very strong explanation as to why. The consulate may ask how someone can marry a Vietnamese and not follow the cultural norms.

Best of luck to you both.

  5. My wife and I are also heading back for the holidays. I lucked out by using my mileage for the tickets. However, the wife has spent plenty on all the ####### we have to lug back to VN with us. I'm sure we will be over the weight limit on our suitcases.

    Have a good trip.

  6. My wife is from Vietnam and holds a Vietnamese passport. We went last week together to get my Visa for Vietnam and with our marriage certificate, I was able to get a 5 year Visa with multiple entries. It cost about $80 plus a $20 expedite fee and I received it within 20 minutes at the Consulate in San Francisco.

However, I cannot stay for more than 90 days or so in Vietnam at a time.

    Best of luck to you.

  7. I had a similar situation where I tried to correct some transposed numbers in my original I-129F.

I sent a very clear cover letter stating our number and the situation.

The USCIS basicall treated it as a new submission and rejected my I-129F since there was not check attached to it.

Meaning, they didn't even read my cover letter explanation.

everything turned out ok in the end.

  8. Waiting now in Chicago to go to Tokyo for my 25 hour flight to HCMC. My fiancee's interview is this coming Tuesday. I am staying 2 weeks and looking forward to seeing Uyen and her family once again.

I will write back as soon as I can on the results :)

Best of Luck and think pink!
