Hi
Not exactly the same day i am afraid, but I had my interview in Los Angeles on 28th October, and I am also still waiting for the Oath letter. The IO said officially 120 days but in fact a lot of people were getting the letters in about 30 days.
Hope this helps
Thanks

Thanks Guys for all your answers.
My question was about the legality of leaving without a US passport, which has been thoroughly answered here thankyou so much.
I do remember leaving for holidays before obviously on my UK passport, but they have always asked for my greencard as well. Is it actually possible that they physically wouldnt let you leave without being able to show either greencard or US passport. ?
Nick D in answer to your last question, I do want to come back at some point, and as mentioned I was curious about the legality of it I suppose.
thanks for your responses

Thanks Lucyrich
In that case is there such a thing as getting passport on same day as long as I have evidence of travel plans?
thanks

Hi all
I am currently waiting for my date for oath ceremony and just have a hypothetical question.
We are looking to go back to England at Christmas time and might stay there for a while, maybe permanently.
I checked out the oath ceremony dates and there is one on 19th December. If by chance my oath ceremony is on this day and I travel to England on lets say 21st December,
1) Is it possible to leave the country without the greencard/ US passport ( I have my UK passport).
2) Can I apply for my US passport in the UK? or would it be better to just apply for the passport before I leave and then get someone to send it to me.
thanks

Hi All
I thought I would quickly share my interview experience here for those who may be interested.
I was scheduled at 9.15 and got there about 8.50. Went into the room handed my letter in to the lady at the little window and sat and waited.
About an hour later a man came out with an armful of files and called a bunch of names out, mine included and we went to a different floor and office and I waited again. About 1/2 hour ish later I was called in.
The officer I had was a very nice friendly man, and he asked me first to raise my right arm and take the oath to tell the truth etc.
That done I sat down and he started to look through my papers. He asked for my passport, green card and driving licence. Asked me to write a very simple English sentence ( which he laughed about as I am from England so if I failed that then there was a serious problem...lol) I read a very simple sentence to him also.
He then went to his computer and clicked on something which apprently randomly generates the civics questions. I have to say, if you know your stuff that part is very easy. 10 questions and you have to get at least 6 correct. Just learn everything that is in the booklet you are given and it will be a piece of cake. I got 10 correct..
Then he went through all the questions on the application form. Just gave the same yes/No answers and I havent been out of the country since filing, so nothing to add there.
He actually thanked me for having an organised file submitted, and because I had sent in evidence with my application about my marriage, he had looked over it all before I got there so didnt need any further clarification of that. I had actually taken some more recent bills with me but he didnt ask for anything new. Just as a side, when I submitted the application I wasnt sure about what to send in as it felt like I was just duplicating everything from the i-751 and that seemed pointless. But I did send some of the same stuff in , but not as much. No photos and stuff like that this time, just some more bills and recent tax returns, updated health insurance coverage, etc.
After he had gone through the application form, he basically told me that he had approved me for citizenship. I think their boss has to rubber stamp it, but I got the letter saying I was approved. He told me offically they have 90 days to inform you about the oath, but at the moment people are hearing within 30 days if not sooner. I am keeping my fingers crossed as I really want to have it done so I can go home for Christmas.
So that was basically it. The IO was very very nice and polite and friendly, and although I was nervous, because I just always am when it comes to immigration, if you have all your ducks in a row, you should have nothing to worry about.
Hope this is useful to someone.
I will post again when I hear about the Oath.
FYI, sent in app at start of May, finger prints couple of weeks later, and then heard about the interview date in middle of August, for an OCtober interview.
thanks, and good luck and best wishes to you all

Thanks for your reply MoonHunt and NickD

Hi All
I got my IL, and was just wondering if everyones' letter says that the proceedings will take about 2 hours!!?
I have read a few reports on here and seems like people are in an out in about 30 mins max.
was just wondering if all letters are just standard wording?
thanks

Thanks zyggy for the info
It does make sense.
Good to know that expediated passports are available too, that ought to fix any possible problems
-
Just wanted to clarify this.
So if you have your oath ceremony and then need to fly internationally, you cant do so until you have your US passport.?
So you would not be able to come back in to the US on your ( in my case) UK passport ? Is that because the greencard is taken away from you at the Oath?
Just wondering as this could cause me serious problems around Christmas time.
If this is the case, how long does it normally take to get passport, and is there any way to speed up the process perhaps?
thanks

Hi All
I have been reading a few threads on this board, and others, where mention has been made about spouse being at the Citizenship Interview. ( if you are applying based on marriage of course)
There is no mention of this in the Guide that I have read, so I was wondering does this really make a difference, and like someone posted on another thread, could it expediate your decision if your OH is there, or even in the waiting room outside?
Also, is it an option to have your spouse in the interview room with you, or do you have to go in by yourself.?
Just curious, as having the OH there would keep me calm
thanks

thanks for your replies
I think we will just wait until we have filed our 2007 taxes, saves complication and I suppose there is no real rush anyway, just want to get this last hurdle over and done with as quickly as possible I suppose
thanks

Hi All
I am currently eligible to file for Citizenship based on 3 years of marriage. I have read through the requirements and I was wondering if it was Mandatory to send in 3 years tax returns or if 2 would be ok. Basically didnt earn enough and was only here a small part of the year in 2004 so didnt have to file them, so only have 2005 and 2006. Would it be better to wait until I have my 2007 taxes filed before I send in application, or would it be ok to send it in with 2 years worth.
I suppose my question is, is that something that is REQUIRED, or just something that is REQUESTED.?
Thanks in advance

"If you don't get US citizenship, but intend to maintain your residence outside the US, only visiting occasionally, you're in an area not well served by US immigration law. You probably don't qualify for most visitors visas or the visa waiver program, because your US Citizen spouse establishes strong ties to the US, so you'll have difficulty proving nonimmigrant intent. The K-3 and IR-1 visas are available to you, but you've got to have a US domicile for the affidavit of support, and both of these visas are intended for people wanting to live in the US permanently. They take a long time to process, too. There's not really an appropriate visa type for the spouse of a US citizen who just wants to visit the US for a two week vacation and then return"
I was wondering about this. If you abandon your perm residence status how easy is it in practice to get back into the USA afterwards even for a vacation. ?Does this depend on your marital status still? ie: if you are divorced from your spouse and went back to your home country to live, then you are no longer classed as having strong ties to USA? or would you still need to try and apply for some sort of visa as the visa waiver pogramme would no longer be available to you?
thanks

Sorry to jump on this thread, but I am quite interested in the answer to this question for a friend of mine too.
He didnt overstay on the VWP, and was married within the 3 months and successfully adjusted status. He was married for 5 years and got his 10 year greencard but not citizenship. He is thinking about going back home to the UK for good and I wasnt sure what advice to give about what his status would be.
Obviously after the 12 months is up he would effectively be classed as giving up his permanent residence and wouldnt necessarily be allowed back in. But he never overstayed at any point so would the same thing apply?
Would he need to apply for tourist visa, and not be able to travel on vwp anymore?
And if he did have to apply to a visa, would the fact that he was previously a resident be held against him?
thanks
