Two weeks ago, you were asking VJ'ers about the process of applying for a K1 visa.
Now you are asking for advice about a tourist visa, so you can be with your girlfriend (note the reduced status from fiancee) as she undergoes an operation.
If your intent is to travel to the U.S. and marry your fiancee, then K1 is the route to take.
I'm sure you've heard over the last 2 weeks, that K1 is a slow, expensive process. Well it is. And that may have encouraged you to think of ways to get round the wait. But immigration officials aren't stupid - if they even think you are trying to play them, you'll lose. The K1 process isn't easy. But it's worth it.

Nope. Today is the last day to register fore the election.
In many states yes, but not all.
-
Once you filed the AOS it will show in USCIS's system, you are not out of status- to be safe I would take a copy of your AOS packet. For I>D> your passport is fine. have fun on your trip!!!
Not true. The OP specifically asked if they could travel using an EXPIRED passport.
Whatever form of photo ID someone presents at check in and security, it needs to be currently valid. An expired document will get you as far as something you make yourself using the back of a cereal box. Source - I've seen travelers refused access to departure areas at both Denver and San Diego airports when they tried to use expired photo ID to get through TSA security.
-
JLL - This thread has been dormant for well over a year.
It would be better if you started a new thread with a Georgia specific question in the topic line.

Majority of all Government Jobs Go thru USAjobs.gov or similar websites and in the job postings they list WHO CAN APPLY- Must be a United States citizen to be eligible to apply
But don't forget that below Federal level, the vast majority of government jobs (State, County, Minicipality) are open to non-citizens.
As always, check carefully before you apply, but never assume you are automatically barred from a local government position.

the lady at the local office where i went for fingerprint told that USCIS may speed up the processing time because of the incoming election. She also told me that one of the filer came back and showed her passport and everything after 6 weeks from the fingerprint appointment day. I hope that all the Sept filers will get their passport before the election or before Christmas.
6 weeks from finger-prints to passport? I wouldn't bank on such a quick process. Interview scheduled, interview attended and passed, oath scheduled, ceremony attended, and a passport applied for, processed and received, all in 6 weeks.... that's going to be far from the norm.
And never mind impossible for those like me, applying early in the 90 day window. The absolute earliest that I could take my oath is November 30. If it happens by the end of January, I'll be more than happy. Working in law enforcement, I'm just dreading the scheduling of my interview and oath. I'm in court a lot, and I can't change those dates. Hope USCIS will understand and be flexible.
As for the election, USCIS won't be busting a gut to speed up our applications. Every state is different, but for most the deadline for registering is early October - so September filers are SOL. Only potential upside? Maybe there was a spike of applicants earlier this year (hoping to vote in November), so less demand now. Doubt it though!

1) Make sure your bank is FDIC insured.
2) As previously suggested - if you will travel a lot within the U.S., go for a national chain (to avoid ATM fees).
3) If you will travel a lot in state, look for a bank with a big local footprint (to avoid ATM fees).
4) If you won't be traveling much at all, a local Credit Union could well be the best bet.
We have two accounts - one with First National Bank of Fort Collins (because of their extensive local ATM & branch network), and the other with Wells Fargo (due to its extensive nationwide network - particularly in the West).
I've not had to use another bank's ATM the entire time I've been in America. No problems with hidden fees from either. We got our mortgage through Wells Fargo too, and don't have a single complaint about them.

Wait till you get back. What's the hurry. I have a feeling that they look more closely at application sent in the day of or within a couple of days from the eligibility date. Before people start jumping on my back, that is my personal opinion, I have no proof. I just put myself in their shoes. If I were an IO, I would be curious why somebody wants citizenship so badly that they would send the form in so it arrives exactly on the day they become eligible. It's either suspicious or just #######-retentive.
They are two possibilities, but certainly not the only ones. It's far from the either/or situation you describe.
People who need Citizenship to progress their careers won't dawdle with their applications - is that suspicious, or #######-retentive, or just common sense? My money is on the latter.

What about us K-1s that don't have employment authorization? I mean, I'll be busy planning a wedding, and his family is great. But what am I supposed to do when there is downtime?! I'm going to go nuts! I am used so used to going to school full-time and working full-time. These past few months since I've graduated have been rough even with working full-time. I think I'm going to go stir crazy.
It's hard! I arrived just 3 weeks before our wedding, so the big day, the honeymoon, and the AOS application were all done and dusted in the first 6 weeks. I spent some time looking for jobs and submitted a couple of speculative applications (in ancticipation of receiving my EAD), but as I was applying for Local Govt. jobs, all the HR departments used E-VERIFY and rejected me immediately! Totally different story once I got the EAD. My first three applications were all successful, and I was fortunate to be able to pick and choose.
Fortunately I'm naturally lazy, so didn't get too itchy being at home all day, but we only had one car at the time and Annette needed that for work - sadly this is America, so public transport wasn't an option.
Also, given that we were being forced to live off one income, and that I didn't know how long it would be before I was working, I didn't feel comfortable spending money. Makes it hard to go out and meet people when you don't feel that you have money to spend. My only luxury was wandering over the street on a Friday night and paying $3 for a High School football ticket.
The salvation? My enforced K1 unemployment lasted the duration of the football season, so I recorded and watched A LOT of NFL and NCAA games that year.

Penguin, thank you so much!
That is a HUGE weight off my mind.
-
Before emigrating, I was a Tax Inspector in the UK.
Then there was the 6 months of enforced K1 unemployment, but after obtaining work authorization, I became a Financial Investigator with the Colorado Attorney General.
Anyone with a public sector background, please be aware that whilst Federal jobs are reserved for USC's, most State, County, and Local jobs are open to non-citizens.
Good luck!
-
If I could piggyback on this too...... just trying to plan ahead.
I've applied under the 3 year rule. Does my wife HAVE to accompany me to the interview?
Indeed, even if she does accompany me, will she likely be called into the actual interview room, or will she spend the entire time in the waiting area?
We have a toddler who's world is dominated by inflexible nap times - and melts down if she's not at home, in her crib, at set times of day. If all three of us have to drive down to Centennial and attend, it's going to get very messy.

You are not eligible to apply under the 3 year rule, due to your divorce. Getting married again will make no difference.
So the 5 year rule applies.
The earliest you can apply for citizenship is 90 days before the 5th anniversary of the date your permanent residency was granted (if you came on an i-130, that would likely be the day you arrived in the U.S.).
As sn530 says, you can only apply for a U.S. Passport AFTER you obtain citizenship.
-
This thread is over a year old.
-
This country was built on the inequity of taxation without representation - yet they expect all LPR's to merrily pay their taxes without having a voice!
That for me is the core reason for applying for citizenship. If I'm paying in, I want a say. My boss is an elected politician - my neighbors get to choose who it will be, but as an LPR I have absolutely no say - and he's MY boss!
As a public servant, it's also practical from a career perspective (State, County and City jobs are open to me, but Federal posts are reserved for citizens), and like others have said I want the freedom of being able to move around. It's unlikely we'll ever be able to afford a vacation/ retirement home in Europe, but if we do it will be nice to have the option of using it for extended periods without worrying about whether I'm maintaining residency in the U.S.
-
Just be grateful you didn't file in Vermont! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay longer.
Go to the USCIS homepage and look for "My Case Status" (top left-ish). Enter the reference number from your BIOMETRICS LETTER (not the original NOA).
Be warned though - many receive the Green Card without their status being updated online. So just keep watching the mail box.
-
I hope it doesn't cause us problems because I looked up the topic because of what I read was acceptable documentation to use for idenity purposes for the SSA and our Bureau of Motor Vehicles. We need to apply for the Social Security number first thing according to the tutorial and my fiance' will need a driver's license or state issued photo id for me to add him to my bank account even. He'll be here the 25th and I was planning on going to get the marriage license, SSA and the BMV the 26th if possible.
A paperless system would actually help people like you who need an SSN stat, as the i-94 would be "in the system" (or hopefully accessible by the SSA) the moment his passport is stamped at the POE.
The way things stand at the moment, it can take up to 2 weeks for the paper i-94 to be recorded on a database that the SSA can access. Your hope of going to the SSA within 24 hours of landing might be counter productive.
From the VJ guide to getting an SSN:
"You should wait 2 weeks after you arrived in the US before applying for a SSN. If you go too soon your record of arrival will not be in the SAVE-ASVI system yet, and it will require manual verification from USCIS. As this will add weeks to the period it takes to process the SSN, it is advisable to attempt to wait the two weeks to be safe."

Highly frustrating when some states require an SSN for the marriage license (damnation to title iv-D and those who withhold child support).
EDIT - Think I'm correct in saying that visitors using the VWP haven't received a paper i-94 for a couple of years now, so the system has had a chance to be tested (on a large scale) and for bugs to be ironed out. I haven't heard any horror stories of electronic i-94s not been recorded properly (people could face huge problems trying to re-enter the USA if there had been glitches affecting their electronic i-94).

Depending on circumstances, there's also the USDA Rural Development Scheme. Much overlooked, but a GEM for house buyers.
As the name implies, it's geographically restricted - you must be buying in an "approved" rural community (generally a rural town with less than 10,000 residents). But don't let that put you off. Our town qualified and is just 25 miles from the northern edge of the Denver Metro Area, 12 miles south of Fort Collins, and 4 miles from the edge of Loveland. Despite qualifying as "rural" we have a both a Target. and a giant mall within 5 miles of the house - and a freeway connecting us. We are also in a brand new, beautifuly landscaped suburban community. So city dwellers out there, put aside any misguided ideas of rural America being The Waltons or Deliverance!
There's also a restriction on the purchase price (the home has to be "modest") but in our county I think it was $250,000 which was more than enough.
Anyway, we bought last summer, and unless anything has changed since then, USDA loans require ZERO money down. They also do not require mortgage insurance. They are available through most big name banks (we got ours through Wells Fargo) and despite putting zero down, we were given the best rate available at the time - not quite as good as you'd get today, but hey-ho.
It was VERY useful to be able to hold on to our savings in case of emergencies. The whole immigration process wasn't cheap (especially the 6 months of enforced K1 unemployment), and it was nice to hold onto our cash savings, rather than use them as a deposit. Over time and as we get more comfortable, we'll throw more at the mortgage to reduce the balance, but until then it's great to know we still have a reserve. Just in case....
