  1. I met my fiancee in person in Ghana. And being the born skeptic that I am, I do not believe in love at first sight. I visited my fiancee several times during the visa journey, got to know her family, and became good friends with one of her friends.

To rid yourself of thoughts of fraud, start mentioning or considering that you want to live in their country permanently. We were going to live only in Gh at one point. Then we decided to do the visa to allow her to meet and know my fam.

  2. So ghana is not using the Online form in placement of the DS156? Thanks

From what I've read about the DS-160, I interpret it as not being needed for K1. The instructions seem to be a little vague though, but this online form (verification of completion) wasn't asked for at my fiancee's interview so it probably isn't needed.

See here for info, particularly the Note for question #13:

See here for a previous VJ discussion on the DS-160 (different embassy):

  3. Many times in my fiancee's country when I am with her and her family, they will speak in their native language if they are not talking to me. At one time I used to think at times they didn't want me to understand what they were talking about, but I know that it is usually because they are naturally more comfortable with and can express themselves better in their own language.

Listen to them sometimes: When non-English native speakers speak in their language, from time to time they will toss in an English word. That's because words are not necessarily always translatable to other languages.

I do think your wife should be more mindful of the way you feel and the need for you to be a part of the conversation, and should try to help you learn her language and put more effort into learning English. Yet she is not necessarily trying to hide anything from you by speaking in her language; it's just her comfort zone.

  4. Thanks Mr. K--

so are you saying cover sheets really arnt needed??

Each of the binder clips has the different "areas" for my stuff- so i am thinking thats alset...

Yeh, cover sheet not needed. The "areas" should be good enough, which will make things easier to locate for your fiance when consular asks for them.

  5. We had one of those file folders with 5 or 7 pockets and what-not. The consular person asked for information separately: evidence of relationship; financial support; medical, police report, birth certificate; DS forms. So, with us it didn't matter if we brought the info in a file folder, suitcase, or just carrying it in our hands... when they asked for particular info, we gave it to them, as long as it was organized when it was handed to the consular dude.

Paper clips were ok, and there were some staples on stuff here and there.

  6. Thanks Mr. K!!!

Do you know is the date on the certificate the day you request it or the day the print it?

So about 4 weeks before or 5 weeks is that okay??

Our report was dated a week after it was requested. That was because the person that took the application knew the interview date and made sure to date it within 30 days of interview. They probably held the application until it was within 30 days and then checked the police records.

If your fiancee goes more than 4 weeks before the interview, make sure he informs them of the interview date and get them to make sure it is dated within 30 days. I'm sure they'll ask him the interview date anyway; it seems like they try to take care of the applicants so they won't have to return. On another thread I said "Cha-ching" with regards to the police office, but all of them aren't like that.

  7. If you provide all 4 as your list states, you have more than enough. At least that worked for me. My income was above the poverty line also.

Are you saying you completed the I-134 with salary and assets info even though your salary is sufficient? I have been searching this site to see if it is ok to do that and haven't found an answer yet.

  8. There is no need to be so rude but in civilised countries and the western world it is damm illegal so typical that you would write this seeing you have Nigeria flag . 3rd world counties yes it may be but not in the western world of USA thankyou very much. And whay the hell would any woman in her right mind want to marry someone who is married and not sure of his situation.

Nigeria and most of Africa is civilized.

  9. Did you request your police certificate already? One of the recent interviews said to get it just about a month out... I know you are closer then me- but we are going to request it exactly at one month to be on the safe side....

Yeah, the paperwork was filled out for the police report. However, once it is picked up it will be dated within one month of the interview. The person at the police office is making sure we're covered.

  10. Mr. K might be able to fill in a little more later this week when his fiance goes- see what differences we will see!

My fiancée :) made her second Akai House vaccination visit today and received her fifth injection (30 Ghana cedis). She was advised to return in four weeks to receive the last injection (30 GHC). She will also pick up the results from her medical examination (results ok) and proof of the injections on that day.

From what I was told, they are spacing the three vaccination visits as far apart as possible, as long as you are able to get them done before the interview. So, when your SO has their medical exam and first set of vaccinations and then inquires about when the results will be ready, Akai House will answer that question with a question: “When is the interview date?” Of course the interview date should have nothing to do with when the results will be ready. I guess Akai House is just trying to have all paperwork ready before the interview, and that is good enough for them.

The vaccinations went like this: First visit=4 injections; second visit=1 injection; third visit=1 injection.

On another note, the total cost for a police report is 40 GHC: It’s 20 GHC for the report, and 20 GHC for the pictures. Although the Ghana police website says to bring passport size photos, they are now requiring you to take photos at the police office [cha-ching!!]. The passport size photos are allegedly too large to fit on the application. In two weeks time, the police report is ready for pickup.

  11. Bumping this to see if we can get kind of a consensus on it, particularly from those in Gh who interviewed since the form came out. It seems to still be "out there" and this was on my mind recently.

Evans and Flor, midge.mij, others, have you made a decision on how to proceed with this? Indications seem to say it is not required for K1.

  12. Here’s the situation:

    - Contract (temporary) work salary = 5x poverty level requirement

    - Savings and retirement acct = 5x poverty level requirement

Since the work is temporary (I contract for a living), is it ok to include info on salary and assets? If there is an issue due to work not being “permanent,” I’d like to also have assets info on the form to help convince the consulate.

I’ve read on VJ and I-864 instructions where it’s recommended to use both assets and income only if the income is not enough. In this situation the income is enough, just temporary. I’d rather use both than just one. Is it ok?

  13. is that anything like downloading skyp to phone? cause both me and my friend in ghana tried to download but it said our phones were not capable. we needed certain types of smartphones.

Nope, no downloading at all. It's like using one of those pre-paid phone cards, but it is better because you add credit to your acct when needed, it's your very own personal number (the access number), and it has speed dial.

    See this: Skype To Go

  14. Skype has something called "Skype To Go," which lets you use Skype on your cell phone or home phone. I call my personal access number, and once connected I dial Ghana. So, I program the Skype To Go access number in my cell and when connected I press the speed dial number to call Ghana. I literally press two numbers to dial Ghana. Skype To Go was dang near perfect till the rates to Ghana increased.

  15. Hello!

So Israel went for his medicals today- have some information to share!

You can no longer get it done at the Akai-Osu House, you have to go to the Akai House in Cantoments near the embassy. He got all the way there to have to go back. So let your loved ones know this- unless something changes in the meantime.

He got there around 11am after traffic and the wrong location given...

He made the first stop at the cashier- paid 154GHC for Physical, lab work, and x-ray and 153GHC for vaccines. So about 310GHC today. The cashier then explained where to go for each thing....

He didnt have to wait long but said a lot of people were around. Everyone else who was there were diversity visas (so maybe this is really true on why all interviews are delayed)

He recieved 4 shots today but will return for 2 more in a month. (and maybe one more in 4 or 6 months if he isnt here). He will also be able to pick up the results on the same visit. For the additional shots it is now 30GHC, so an additional 60GHC for the total of about 380GHC. This could vary depending on the person though.

Overall he said it wasnt too bad. He was instructed to go for a furthur eye exam but wont affect results for the embassy!

He finished around 2pm. So 3 hours which for Ghana standards I dont believe is too bad!

    Hope this helps!

    8/2010

    Thanks for the info.

Do you have the address for this location... is the tel number 233-302-784-772? I'm wondering because even though the packet says Osu, when I visited it was also across the street from the embassy (as you stated).

So, you are saying all the results will be available on the date of the second visit?
