  1. I thought the speech lacked substance. I wanted to hear something about their plans for education, healthcare, the economy....instead all I heard were sarcastic remarks and a play on fear. I really did not like the line about community organizers. Those people sacrifice a lot for her to say that they don't do anything.

  2. I've never heard of ppl in England being called African Americans...

As for the African American term, I am mixed. I can see how black people could be annoyed to hear since it's just a color. But if someone black wants to just be called black, I will do that. If they want to be called African American, I'll do that too.

The thing is that it is just a color for you (and for me, since I am black --- not African-American), but to others, it's a word that they feel has a negative connotation.

  3. Hold on...stay focused on your argument. You said that most Europeans learn to speak English because it's a marketable language. I'm asking a simple question - is the Spanish language marketable in the U.S. comparitive to English in Europe?

yes if I want someone to clean my toilet..

Edit. What is real funny is that the people I know who are actually from Spain think the Latino version of Spanish is quite ghettoized.

What is the Latino version of Spanish? Anyway, this argument is similar to that between Portuguese speakers in Portugal and those in Brazil. To mose Spanish speakers - and here I'm including myself since I'm a native Spanish speaker - Castillian Spanish is an older version of the language.

  4. Pollsters need to stop referring to Hispanics/Latinos as if we were some homogenous group. We are not. The reason that Hispanics in Florida vote differently than Hispanics in NY, for example, is because we come from different countries and have different political priorities. The majority of Hispanics in Florida, for example, are Cubans and Cuban-Americans who lean Republican.

  5. I think that we bought just in time, and have no plans to sell anytime soon. I fell sorry for people who bought and have to sell (withouth accumulating any equity), but I also feel sorry for those who bought using escalation clauses. There are several properties in my community that are for sale, and one has been on the market for at least a month.

Just a month? My townhome complex has had half a dozen units on sale, 2 of them since May. The most recent one was listed a month ago and is still out there.

In the DC metropolitan area, a month is a very long time....this is just in my subdivision, but there are houses sitting on the market longer. I think that this is also because sellers haven't realized that the bubble either has or is bursting. There are a lot of people still overpricing their homes.

Well, for us it's a welcome development - we will have to buy a house sooner or later. The prices are still nowhere near a "fair price", though.

I think I'd like to see the prices decreasing slowly (no more that 5% a year) over the next few years. And yes, I DO feel for those who bought recently.

    Bartek

The caveat being that interest rates remain stable....

  7. joining in: Pras and I have failed 2 (or 3) "milestones":
    • Dec 31, 2006 (but we had only one chance, ON wedding night--when I proved clumsy and unprepared)
    • Easter/anniversary (note: I know Easter next year is 4/8 vs our anniversary of 4/15)

Still hoping to make third milestone of north-american-summer-retreat 2007.

Sorry to hear that, but are you calculating when she's ovulating?

  8. What is the moral of this story?

Unfortunately, the facts speak for themselves. Nothing has changed for a lot of these evacuees (or ever will)...they just took the show on the road.

Of course there are azzholes the world over that try to make a buck or a name out of a bad situation. Is this an indictment of Houston? Another cheap shot at Southern rednecks and the South? Talk about stereotypes!

Jim Pruett and Kinky Friedman are local comedian / celebrities that make a living out of being obnoxious jokesters. Nothing new there.

Funny thing though...I didn't see Teddy Kennedy, Howard Dean, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, etc., etc., sending caravans of buses down to bring "their base" up to their own neck of the liberal woods.

Yes, we are stuck with our Katrinanites in Houston...but it is not too late for Howard Dean to send down some buses and bring "his base" to Vermont. Why doesn't / didn't he? And where is Teddy when we need him? AWOL when the going gets tough? The facts speak for themselves. Talk is cheap and bullsh!t walks.

I see your point...but the thing is, that these people are not the base of any political party as most aren't even registered to vote.

  9. It's called "torture by proxy". You want to get around laws in your own country that prohibit such behaviour - so you send them to other countries where they have fewer legal protections and even fewer scruples. There they are tortured while you have deniability. This is also the murky arena of CIA affiliated "private contractors".

Well if Bush has his way we won't have to resort to "torture by proxy"....we'll be the ones doing it...

  10. Congrats to all of those who have discovered that they're pregnant!!! I read a great blog piece in the Washington Post this morning on achieving balance (economic, relationship, etc) before you have a baby....great advice.

  11. First of all, you should get measured to make sure that, that is really your size. You can get this done for free at any lingerie store (Victoria's Secret, etc.). You should also ask whoever is measuring you for some advice in terms of support...with this, you should be able to shop for bras at any store. Good luck.

  12. From a storytelling point of view - that would be quite terrible if the series wound up resorting to cliche.

Of course, HP was never all that original to begin with. Its well told certainly, but its simply another take on Just William / The Hardy Boys.

I totally agree on the cliche thing, that's exactly what I was going to say. I mean, she's been SO secretive before about these things so why would she give away now a big hint that Harry will die? That will be such a letdown if he does because we all will have known it was coming! :P Any hints yet as to when book 7 might come out?

    2007 apparently.

I don't think so, the next movie is coming out in 2007
