  1. It would be helpful if you mentioned here the kind of work you would like to find. Perhaps there are those who can help you focus your search. Others have told me that posting on www.craigslist.com is effective, and it costs nothing. As you probably already know, a lot of "job openings" are posted only to comply with equal employment opportunity regulations, but someone has already been picked for the job. Temp agencies are also a good place to start, depending on what skills and training you already have. Temp agencies will place you as a temporary employee with one of their clients, take a percentage of your pay, and send you the rest. It is a good way to get in the front door for many companies.

This is very informative. Thank you for that insight.

I would love to have Customer Service job. I worked for an online shopping site before and I love my job there. Prior to that, I was also a Collections Specialist for a mobile company for our US clients. I'm trying to land a job similar to those too.

I already saw those temp agencies online but I haven't sent my resume's yet.

So its also alright to drop off resume to company's here? I was just wondering if people here do that. That is also the way we look for a job back home. I will surely do that as soon as I can.

    Thanks "Old Dominion'!

With that kind of experience, I think it will be useful to take your resume to selected companies, and also directly to the temp agencies in your city. The unfortunate thing is that so much of American customer service/call center work has been transferred to Canada, India and the Phils, and also to rural areas of the U.S. where jobs are scarce. Good luck and keep us up to date. You seem really intelligent and self-assured, so it won't be long before you land a good job. Just don't get talked into selling cemetery lots...lol

Thank you! I promise I won't sell anything because I'm not good with that!!

  2. My wife (applying for AOS) and I were married on November of 2007, after we had been seeing each other for a year. Our living circumstances are a little unusual, in that we both have live-in positions where we work, which is where we met and where will still live since being married. We had our interview today and it was not what I expected. We both felt quite intimidated by the officer who seemed shocked that we had a civil ceremony where none of our family attended, and that we rarely go out together and have little personal time. We explained that our work schedules kept us very busy. I am in school and she is working and looking into getting back into college. My wife and I presented plenty of pictures, and during the time we were separated, answered all questions correctly- which were about how I proposed, which was casual “we talked about getting married and decided to“. His facial response made it seem that he felt this was unusual. He even asked about our sex life, if we practiced safe sex, and what types of birth control we use. She is the one applying for AOS. Everything should have been in order, but he told us that he would have to mail the decision and to expect it 3-6 weeks from today. Are we in trouble? Our lawyer said that he may have felt the marriage a little fishy because of our living circumstances and causality of our decision to marry. I am wondering what will happen next….???

What an interview. I hope everything will end well. Keep us posted.

    Good Luck!

  3. The way my husband did it was through travelocity.. He just forwarded the receipt to me and I had it printed. He bought PAL ticket for direct flight. He was afraid that I'll get lost if there is a stop over. :hehe: . I just asked him for the copy of the credit card that he used but it was not asked upon check in of the baggage. I kept 2000 pesos in cash for pocket money. Then they asked to pay for terminal fee and the travel tax fee.

Good Luck and Have a safe flight!

  4. Wow you first day was very long!! There must be a lot of people there on Mondays. For the others who did not take their medical exam yet, I suggest you go there Thursday and Friday and very early in the Morning.

Go there in full stomach because the people there will ask you to walk in all 5 floors to complete all the medical exam and be attentive. People who work there are not very nice.. Once they call your number you have to respond immdiately or else they will eat you alive.

I had my share of bad experience too but all we can do is adhere to their system.. There are no other place to go to but there.

    Good luck to everyone!!!

  5. Hi Ria,

Nope, sayang nga we were not seatmates. While we were on the same row, there were two persons between us and an aisle. Funny thing was I did not even get to see his face on the plane the entire time we were flying.

This is the entire love story. He said he noticed me when I stood up to put my carry-on in the overhead compartment. After I took my seat, he tried to get my attention by giving me an extra blanket. When I said thank you to him, I did not even look up (supladita eh hehehe) kaya di ko nakita ang face nya. For the 12 hour duration of the flight he waited for a chance to talk to me but the opportunity never presented itself so he started writing notes on pieces of paper and tried to pass it to me pero inabot din siya ng kahihiyan (was too embarrassed) so he tore the notes apart. For my part, I was clueless that the blanket guy was interested pala talaga. Finally, we arrived in Detroit and so he made a "do or die" decision. He wrote one final note (his third attempt), wrote down his email address and passed it to my Filipina seatmate and then nagtago na dahil hiyang-hiya siya. Sabi nya, if I did not write him back, at least he can say that he tried.

Guess you know by now the ending of the story :luv: Northwest is a big part of our love story.

Saan ka sa FL pupunta? My brother and his family live in Coral Springs.

Happy New Year to you too! I'm so glad you are finally coming home to Stephen. Pasalubong kong halo-halo, chopsuey, siomai and siopao ha? Gosh, I really miss Chow King :crying:

If you really miss Chowking, you can try the Chowking in 131 W Carson St Ste D, Carson, CA 90745 (310) 835-7100. My husband showed that to me when I got here. But we didn't try to eat there yet.

  6. I know this isn't part of the question, but, you CAN work without a SS#. You just need to request a Tax Identification Number to pay your taxes through the IRS. Then you can change it to your SS# when that arrives.

Thanks for sharing us this information. I have to figure out now how to get that Tax Identification Number.

Allen, you might be also interested in getting TIN since there is already a job waiting for you.

  7. For me at least..

    • I had my wife Americanize my CV/Resume as much as possible, printed it made into PDF's for emailing.. etc
    • Signed up to Monster, Career Builder and anything else related
    • Checked local papers, online and in print
    • Stalked City, County and State websites for jobs.. (sometimes good pay, good benefits and holidays!)
    • I aimed for jobs I really wanted, would happily do, would do, could do, would do if I had to and would do because I needed the money/benefits in that sort of order lol

Good luck and expect your first job to be shite, mine was most others was as well but you might get lucky!!

Thanks for the tips. I wanted to get a job that I also wanted and will likely enjoy doing and of course with the needed benefits that comes with it.

  9. hello there..like you i am waiting for my ssn card for almost 2 months now and got problems with it! they couldn't give to me because they said the immigration haven't updated my status to my married name,it is so hard to wait really, and im beginning to lose hope that i couldn't get it until my AOS is approve.BTW, i filed last week of August got my EAD.I have work waiting on me, but i couldn't start without ssn..im still holding on that one day the immigration will update my status..

I hope you wont encounter problems.Goodluck and God Bless Us...

    Allen

    Thanks Allen!!

I hope you can get your SSN soon.. Your lucky to have a job waiting for you. And don't lose hope. I always believe that everything happens for a reason so just be more patient.

And I hope there will be no problems with mine. The lady in the SSN office said that my name is the same still my maiden name but she still processed it and asked me to wait for 4 weeks. She advised me to go back and look for her if I don't receive it within the time frame.

Good Luck to both of us!

Best advice I can give is to remeber the interview is yours too. Not only is the employer looking to see if you will fit the position, but you should look to make sure the position/place fits you as well. Ask questions!

And double check your spelling! Remember the spell check button!

 I will definitely check my spelling!!

    Thanks again!!

  10. Put good effort into your resume. It's the first thing the hiring managers see and it's all they have to judge you by (until they meet you at the interview of course). If possible ask someone in the same industry as you are trying to get into review & critique your resume for you

Unfortunately, the friends that I have here are working in completely different field. I definitely love to get a job for a Customer Service Position. I was a Senior Account Representative in a call center. I love my work there , the people, the working environment especially my superiors. I'm just hoping that I can get a similar job here.

So, let me appeal to those who are in Customer Service field, I would really appreciate your opinion and advise!!

    Thanks 'kaffy'!!!

I will remember that by the time I get an interview.. so far there is none or there was one. An employer called up for an interview but the job is for an insurance agent position and I suck in sales. I am best though in Customer Service. I will definitely ask questions.

    Thanks for the pointer!!

  12. I just got my EAD and hopefully my SSN soon. I would like to appeal for all those who have jobs right now to share the most effective way in looking for a job in this foreign land.

I can't wait to get a job and so far, I signed up in online job search engine like the careerbuilder.com. Is this effective at all? I feel that this is not enough to land a job in this thriving economy.

For US citizens, please share with us the tips the effective way of looking for a job here in this foreign country!!!

    Thanks in advance!

  13. She will need the letter from the embassy, her passport and pictures and either the D-156 or the D-156 K.

When I went there before, the guard is very strict and will not allow others without the paper and they will not allow anybody exempt for the person who will have their medical exam taken.

    I suggest that you wait.

Good Luck in processing your papers!!

  14. Congratulations!!!

GREAT News for Us today.... My Fiancee had her interview today and passed! She said it went smooth and everyone from the pre-screener, to the consular were extremely nice and friendly. I guess Santa was good to them over the holidays.

Now we are just waiting for the VISA.... I hope by the end of the week we will have it.

    Congratulations!!

  15. i just wanna share this.. :)

i got my SSN today..

    applied - 12/15

    card printed - 12/24

    envelope postmarked - 12/30

now it's time for a hardcore job hunting!!!! rubhands.gif

    .

Congrats Envy_me!!! I'm expecting to get mine after yours. Good luck in job hunting.. I posted my resume in Career Builder and an employer called me up for an interview but sad to say its an Insurance company... I don't consider myself a sales person so I passed.

I just called UCSIS today to follow up on my I-485 and I guess I have to wait longer for any feedback about it since our local office is far from getting into the September filers. The agent said the local office is still working for the March filers.... I'm just making sure that everything is A ok since we had an RFE and I'm hoping the the documents we submitted is sufficient enough for the officers reviewing it.

Good Luck to Everyone looking for a job like me!!

  16. hi guys, first dont get me wrong im very happy with my husband and our life right now..i know that i should just wait for stuffs to come when they are due (i.e, ead , ap and gc) but that's not my concern.. i need a friend, someone i can call, talk to maybe online but someone i can meet up, have a coffee with some laugh talk about anything and everything.. i got a lot of friends here in vj i know but i need someone i can see, hug and you get what i mean?

  17. hello people of the philippines...what did your USC spouses send for the I 130? a copy of the NSO marriage certificate or the one from the local civil registry? if i photocopy the original NSO copy...it wont be very clear? or should i just send the original NSO marriage certificate...its easy to get another copy anyway from NSO in the philippines right?

Just wanna share my case. I have my NSO authenticated birth certificate and that is the copy I brought for my interview but the lady who collected the documents asked for a copy of my BC from the local civil registry. She said the copy from the NSO is not clear.

They gave me the white paper for additional documents because of that. So the approval of my Visa was delayed. If you can bring both, its much more better.

  18. He was pinay.

    u mean PINOY!?

pinay = girl, pinoy = guy..

 hey, for all the times I've had to hear Filipinas mix he with she, I get a free pass on that mistake.

Thanks for sharing your story.. and for the last statement.. I plead guilty for that.....my husband always correct me.. I just can't help it....

    Happy New Year everyone!!!

  19. *Question 1 - for American men: Did you seek out Filipinas through a dating agency or marriage broker, and if so, why?

    My husband did not.

Question 2 - for the Filipinas: Did you ever place an ad or set up a profile with any international dating agency or marriage broker, and if so, why?

I did not join any dating sites.

Question 3 - for the American men: What are the differences (including physical) between your Filipina spouse and your ex-wife?

The ex-GF of my husband is also a Filipina raised in US and he did not like the attitude of American girls including the Americanized Filipinas. I'm taller than her, she is petite. I am nice but she is nicer  according to my husband but he fell in love with me. Besides he like my being "suplada"/maldita" side. My husband has a lot of Filipino friends that's why he was exposed to Filipinos. And that is why he wanted to visit the Philippines and experience the Filipino culture first hand. He visited PH 3 times. First with his friends and second to live there for 7 months. That is the time we met and the 3rd time is to meet my family.

Question 5 - for the Filipinas: What are the differences (including physical, age) between your kano spouse and your last boyfriend or ex-husband?

My husband is much taller than my ex and more honest aside from other things. Filipino men, sorry if I will generalized this, are mostly BS's. They just wanted to say things that make girls happy which is also great at times but not all the time. Most Filipinos has still the macho attitude of collecting girlfriends even they are married already. I can say this because I have a lot of male friends and that's what they do most of the time.

    Honest answers please.

I answered it in a very honest way possible.

Question 6 - for the American men who didn't meet their Filipina spouse through a dating service or marriage broker, what stories or rumors had you heard about those sites and the kinds of Filipinas you'd find?

This is not from my husband's opinion but from other Foreigner that I know. I work in a call center in PH and my boss is an American looking for love. He thinks that Filipinas that he he had dated have a lot of expectations from him. They expect him to pay all the time, give her allowance. Spend money for her family etc.. etc.... He said that Filipinas expect them to be filthy rich based on the color of their skin. Which is funny but also true for some cases. But fortunately now, he already found one decent Filipina.

Question 7 - for the Filipinas who didn't join a dating service or marriage broker, what stories or rumors had you heard about the kinds of men you'd find that way?

I just think that most men in a dating service are just plainly shy to approach women face to face and they prefer a get to know the girls firsts before really dating them or they are old men looking for someone who will take care of them or whom they can spend the rest of their lives.

  20. Thanks for all the great responses! :) Hopefully, all these personal testimonies are helping dispel the myths and stereotypes, or at least help us all have a better understanding. I think we're all in agreement that we want to see everyone's marriage succeed.

Mr Fancy Pants, I like reading your thread. I didn't have the chance to answer this questions yet coz I'm waiting for you to answer the questions or share your own story here.

Will you be able to share yours too?

    Thanks!!
