  1. ok I must have not expressed myself clearly. I know I won't be able to work if I don't remove conditions. What I have on mind is: say I send the paperwork tomorrow, I expect I will not get my GC until Jan. 18th. What are my options for working then ? What do I need to show my employer to prove I can work (if I can). How long before I get NOA ?

And finally where do I sent all that paperwork ? Chicago again ?

    Thanks a lot

  2. I have a child who has my maiden name and it is extremely important for me to have the same name as he does. My husband wanted to adopt him prior to our marriage and now changed his mind. I would have never changed my name if I knew he was going to back off. And now is the best moment for me because my passport is expired, Virginia marriage certificate does not specify which name I will use and due to this I have to go through hell to get my new passport in my married name. If I changed it right now my new passport would have the correct name without any problems and my new green card would too.

This has nothing to do how our marriage is going because nothing changed and our marriage is just fine.

Could I get denied if I tell them this ?

    thanks

  3. Let's face it: she is not getting a job because she is not American. I went through it myself and so did many immigrants I know here.

But Popo hang in there........... hundreds of employers are just limited: they will hire a high school graduate who can't count till ten other than using calculator just because he or she is American, but one day you will meet one who will give you a chance.

I was in the same situation and after 4 months of looking I found a great job.

    Good Luck

  4. Very interesting post

I am not at this stage yet but I kept telling my husband that I would not apply for the citizenship when the time comes becasue I am sick and tired of Americans thinking that everybody's life goal is to become a citizen of their country. I am sick and tired of being treated like I am "worse" just because I am a foreigner, etc. etc. I don't feel welcome here.

But it's all emotional, nothing substantial. Now I am thinking:

    1. I have to drive 200 miles to make my passport renewed and it costs me big $$$ to have it done through the embassy.

    2. I work for the federal government and who knows - what if one day they decide that the permanent resident can't be employed by them ?

    3. What if I retire here and one day SS Administration will decide not to pay my benefits just because I am not a citizen - laws can change any time ?

etc, etc, so it's possible that I will change my mind when the time comes.

  5. If you live in Chicago area, maybe better pay them a visit. I think it's always easier to talk face to face, especially when issue is quite complex.

What I would do if I were you: I would ask his mom to go to local WKU (I think this is the name of the place) and tell them where he is and why and ask them what he can do under the circumstainces and so on and see what they have to say. I wonder if he was not supposed to have gone to them himself and notify them of his plans - but who knows - it might be naive thinking as they could have called him in before he left Poland.

As to your concern of having him arrested, I honestly doubt they would do it at the airport unless somebody let them know you are coming. I don't believe airlines send them a list of passengers, do you ? But if somebody reports him when he is there, he might face serious problems. And believe me, this might happen.

I am really, really curious how everything ends, so please keep us posted.

And of course best of luck to you guys.

  6. This is similar to what my friend did. She had a debt in collection status and told the debt collector that she doesn't have any money and is leaving the country for good. The guy decided to write it off as there supposedly was no way to collect it. What she didn't know is that: 1) American fiance would dump her after two months of her arrival to US even before they got married, 2) She would have to return to her country, 3) Debt collector would quit his job, wouldn't write off her debt and the new debt collector would show up at her door again LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

I didn't make this up, this is what happened.

You NEVER know if you are leaving forever. Btw I am still paying debts in my country and at least I know that nobody will bother my parents.

    Good luck

  7. I would not read between lines here. They had other candidates whose SSN were easy to verify and preferred to hire somebody else. I work part time in the store and my observation is that management there are not a bunch of rocket scientists, they are afraid of things that never happened before and scared to death to do something that was never done before. Lack of local references is a problem. Being a foreigner is a problem. Unverified SSN is a BIG problem in eyes of a limited person.

By the way: all new SSN's are unverifiable through credit check (not sure about criminal history), even though they are all issued by Social Security Administration.

    Good luck in job search.
