Hello there Regarding the SSN — we initially planned to get it along with the EAD, so we didn’t apply for it right after my arrival. However, after we got married, we changed our minds and decided to get my SSN earlier. From what I understand, as long as you haven’t filed your AOS yet, you’re still allowed to apply for a Social Security Number - as long as your I-94 is still valid and hasn’t expired. I first submitted my application online and then scheduled an appointment. On the day of the appointment, I brought my passport, our marriage certificate, and my most recent I-94. I received my SSN card just 4 days later!

Hi everyone, I’m preparing my Adjustment of Status (AOS) package after entering the U.S. on a K-1 visa, and I have a question about translating my birth certificate. I know USCIS requires certified translations, but I’m wondering: Can my friend translate the document for me? She’s fluent in both Turkish and English and lives in the UK. She’s not a professional translator. Is this acceptable for USCIS as long as she includes the proper certification statement? My original birth date is written in European format (DD/MM/YYYY), but I filled out my AOS forms using the U.S. format (MM/DD/YYYY). Should my friend write the date in the English translation as “2 March 1993” to avoid confusion? If anyone has experience with this, I’d really appreciate your advice. I just want to be safe and avoid an RFE🙏 Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone! 🙂 I'm a K-1 visa holder getting married in Washtenaw County, Michigan. On the marriage license, my current legal name (from my passport) is listed. The instructions for the "Certificate of Marriage" section (which we’ll sign after the ceremony) say to print the name you’ll use after marriage. Since I will apply for AOS and change my name through Form I-485, should I print my current legal name (as on my passport) or my intended new married name on the certificate? I want to avoid issues with USCIS. Has anyone had experience with this in Michigan? I’d be very grateful for any advice or experience you can share!

K-1 Visa Entry at Detroit (DTW)
dreamer32 replied to dreamer32's topic in Moving to the US and Your New Life In America
Thank you so much for the detailed reply — I really appreciate it! I actually entered through DTW just a few days ago, on May 8th. My experience was smooth — no secondary, and it took around 10 minutes total. The CBP officer seemed confused by my Polish police certificate at first, and I couldn’t really understand why in the moment since I was so tired after the long travel. Later, while talking to my fiancé, we realized it was probably European date format that caused the confusion 🤣 They only took the sealed envelope — not the X-ray CD. Thanks again for sharing your experience! 😊 -

Thanks a lot for sharing! That sounds super smooth — glad to hear it only took a few minutes. Also, really helpful to know about the X-ray CD. Appreciate it! -

Hi everyone! I’ll be entering the U.S. next week through Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) on a K-1 visa, and I’d love to hear from others who’ve entered through this POE. Will I need to hand over my X-ray CD along with the sealed medical envelope, or should I just carry it with me? What was your experience like at Detroit POE as a K-1 visa holder? How long did secondary inspection take, if any? I’ll be traveling alone and want to make sure I’m fully prepared. Thanks so much in advance!

Thank you for your reply! I understand the timing concern. I will be writing a petition to assign a different person to handle my case if possible, as I won’t be able to attend the court hearing in July. Hopefully, this will ensure everything is taken care of while I proceed with my K1 visa process.

Hi everyone! I’m the complainant/victim in a legal case and I just received a letter today with my court date scheduled for July. Since there isn’t a court decision yet and I'm the victim, do I need to show documents or provide any proof regarding this case at the embassy during my K1 visa interview next week? Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

No, I have not received anything from my embassy yet. My fiancé received K1-FTP letter last Wednesday. When I tried to get an appointment back then, the system did not allow me saying "my case is not ready for an appointment" . However, I wanted to try it again today and the system allowed me to get an appointment in April even my case is still in transit.

Hi everyone, My case went "In Transit" last Wednesday and was not ready for an appointment two days ago when I checked, but I was able to schedule one today. My embassy will probably receive my case soon, and my interview is on April 11th. Could there be any problems with setting an appointment before my case is officially marked as "Ready"? I’m feeling a bit paranoid and would love to hear from others who went through something similar! Thanks in advance!😊

Thanks for the insight! I know the case number is the same, but unfortunately, I can’t do anything until the site shows that our case is in transit. I’ve noticed that some cases sent to NVC after ours, and to the same embassy, have already been transferred, and people have even scheduled their interviews. It’s a bit puzzling, but I’ll reach out to the embassy soon to see if they can provide any updates. It’s a waiting game for now, but I appreciate your help!
