  2. It's so nice to have a place to go to hear about others in our situation. Especially when the posts change to good news. We only checked out the parts of VJ before that dealt with getting the visa and the 'green card'. That part went smoothly for us, even though it felt like it was taking forever at the time. I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to realize this is also a good place for advice and discussions about daily life.

My husband is a sweet and wonderful person. His English is very good, and conversation is not a problem for him. Like some of your SOs, he came here without a degree. Last year, he got his driver license, green card, and GED. He's been able to find a few hours work on craigslist doing websites and a few odd jobs. He's getting very discouraged, though. He's been here around 16 months, and has only made a few hundred dollars. He wants to get a good job and support me, but hasn't had any luck. (My financial situation is a blessing in one way, but hurts his pride, too)

Life here has been much easier in some ways than it was for him in Morocco, but much more difficult in other ways. He has trouble dealing with my ex (he can't stand the way the ex talks to/treats me, and the ####### that's still dragging through the courts is driving us crazy). Also, I don't have many friends for different reasons (that's what happens in a divorce and I didn't have many as a stay at home mom anyway), but he thinks it's all his fault. I'm sure some people are avoiding me because of their prejudice (not because of him, as he says; because of their flaws, in my opinion). I told him I don't need people like that in my life, but he still seems to feel bad about it. Some people don't treat him well because of his background (he's Arab, Muslim, foreign in general, whatever). He's from a small city where everyone knew and respected him. It's also much more calm and relaxed there.

I thought going back to visit his family would help, but many people treated him differently because he's living here now. Many people expect him to help them (share the wealth, I guess), but he's not working, and we can't save the whole world (even though we'd sincerely love to). Some were obviously jealous of him (it probably didn't help that we rented a car to travel around - most Moroccan don't have cars) and probably thought he was showing off (not his style). Even his siblings are acting differently toward him.

Things have been getting worse. It seems like there are more times that he's not talking to me than times that he is (he clams up when he's upset). When he gets over whatever is bothering him, everything is wonderful, just like it was before. But I don't know how long that will keep working. It already seems like it's not. This week hasn't been good. He hasn't talked since yesterday morning. I am (always have been) willing to do whatever I can to help him. I just don't know how to help now.

I understand where you are coming from.

When my husband arrived I assumed it would be hard for him for the first year but that by the end of that year things would be great. It took a lot longer. The first year really was the hardest b/c he was actually pretty depressed. He also came from a town where he was quite prominent and knew lots of people. Once he was working and in school he felt better and made a few friends. But it's now in the 4th year that he finally has a job that he really likes and friends he actually considers to be "close friends."

He also does the silent thing when he's angry. That was difficult for me at first since I have abandonment issues  but I'm learning to respect that he needs time on his own to process his feelings. I feel like mine process in minutes... but he takes longer.

Things just take times. I think he will adjust, but it's big adjustment that will take time. The good side is that your relationship can be strengthened by knowing it can stand these trials. And when you come out the other side of this part of the relationship you'll know how strong your marriage really is.

I'd just keep giving him all the support you are and give him time.

  3. Hello all good people !!! Soon I will have to Leave Juarez and we found it to be cheaper to fly from El Paso to Kansas City. Instead of Flying from Ciudad Juarez to kansas City... The difference is about $300 dollars or so !!! So here is my question !!! What is the Best way to get to the El Paso Airport with no car from Juarez !!! Anyone done this before any reconmendations !!! Also I was hoping to find out the distance between the border in Juarez to the El Paso Airport !!! We have about two weeks before we need to do something !!! We are Praying the consulate accepts our appeals and allow us to go together, if that happens we will rent a car and drive together !!! Please Pray for us that, that will happen !!! We still have some good people on our side fighting with us !!! But you know that whoever is faithful with little will given Much !!! So can any one help !!! Thanks Chuck and Teresa

I hope you can go together. But if you can't, you can walk over the border and then take a taxi to the airport. I don't remember how far it is, but I did that 5 yrs ago and it was pretty simple. I think it's pretty close. You could mapquest the distance to be sure.

Y a ti tambien.

  6. Thanks. That's good to hear. Anyone else care to chime in?

If the name check isn't in, it could take months to years. However, they say that the name check will be a faster process now, so maybe just months. It depends how common your name is and if someone with a criminal history has a name similar to yours.

On the other hand, I've also read that now they wait for the name check to come through before they call you for the interview, so the nc may not be a problem anymore.

  7. We just sold our car on Craiglist. I received a lot of emails from scammers. I didn't know they also tried to scam buyers with the "shipping" thing. I also had emails from people who flaked on me. They'd tell me they were going to come look at the car and never showed. We had two serious buyers. The first paid for a 50 point inspection and a car fax. She wanted me to lower the price $800 and I said no, especially since the car passed the inspection with flying colors. She gave me the mechanics report and the carfax and I gave those to the man who eventually bought the car.

I'd be careful where you meet to look at the cars. You can choose an neutral place like a well-lit grocery store parking lot. I also don't think it's too much to ask for copies of receipts for all services done on the car.

  9. I don't agree with your premise that educating children is ever inappropriate. However, looking at your numbers, what would be the alternative? If you don't educate these kids, you'll be creating an underclass of uneducated teenagers and adults who will be more likely to turn to crime which will only make things worse. How is that better than fronting the bill now? Prison is a lot more expensive per capita than school.

Why does this responsibility lie on the United States. Is it right that I fly to Sweden have a baby there and then expect them to pay for me. I am more than happy to pay my share of taxes but not when it comes to paying for 20,000,000 people who took it on themselves to jump the line, literally jump the fence, and basically force me to subsidize their lives. And then have the audacity to wave their flag in my face.

Did this kid do that though?

I get the whole illegal immigrant thing, but I don't see what the big deal is about a goddamned flag. Why is it so threatening to some people?

Maybe the boy scouts never let them be in the color guard as children and now they have to redirect their anger toward an inanimate object.

  10. As I'm sure your concern is for these kids and their truncated futures if they're not given the opportunity to become bilingual, I'd agree that we were failing them if we didn't provide adequate education in our school systems.

The problem is that the United States tax payer is subsidizing these kids education. Therefore resources are being take away from other students to setup class after class for ESOL. I know quite a few people who are teachers and it is the same story in a lot of schools. Where now with budget shortfalls they are cutting services left, right and center. Yet at the same time hiring more and more ESOL teachers and staff. So I asked them are they actually teaching them English and the answer is usually NO. That they are simply converting the text into Spanish for them to understand. :bonk:

Here are some facts on what illegal immigrants are taking from American taxpayers..

    • $12,000,000,000 annual cost to America to educate the kids of illegal aliens.
    • another $17,000,000,000 to pay for educating the anchor babies of illegal aliens

I don't agree with your premise that educating children is ever inappropriate. However, looking at your numbers, what would be the alternative? If you don't educate these kids, you'll be creating an underclass of uneducated teenagers and adults who will be more likely to turn to crime which will only make things worse. 11. Besides, since when has maintaining ties to your culture meant you had to sever any and call connection to the country you reside in? I'm Jewish. I celebrate the Jewish holidays, I've learned Hebrew (which I promptly forgot most of after my Bar Mitzvah), and the historical background surrounding Judaism and the Jewish people/religion as a whole. Does that mean I expect or force anyone else to be like me? No, of course not. Even if I wanted that to happen, why would they do it? More importantly, I was born here -- in the United States -- and therefore I identify myself as an American, first and foremost. I'm still Jewish and will always be Jewish, but what came from my ancestors does not take precedence over who I am today.

I think that's a good point. I think that's a perfect example of how we can celebrate our individual cultures while at the same time being "American." A kid with pride in his Mexican heritage doesn't make him any less American. We can be loyal to the US and still honor traditions and have respect for our ancestors.

  12. are you sure all the latinos don't care about integrating into the country??

I am not saying all but definitely more than other nationalities. When you hear of kids that are 10 years old, born in the US, and don't know a word of English. That is a problem.

I can go into any city in the USA and see multiple examples of this.

I have no problem with good honest hard working people migrating a a nation but I do have a problem when they feel they can enter and do as they please.

At least show some respect and learn the language.

Seriously? All the 10 yr olds I've met are bilingual and many prefer English since it's what is spoken at school with friends. Granted I'll give you that a kid who immigrates at 8 or 9 may still prefer Spanish at 10. I lived in San Diego and worked in majority Latino neighborhoods. When I'd make home visits to families with recent immigrants, the school age kids always preferred speaking to me in English even when I talked to their parents in Spanish.

As I'm sure your concern is for these kids and their truncated futures if they're not given the opportunity to become bilingual, I'd agree that we were failing them if we didn't provide adequate education in our school systems.

  13. my point is.. the 'party' concept of may the 5th is not the true meaning of it, it's some american distorted version of it.. if you go to Mexico on May the 5th you won't see a corona special for 2.99...

so now if there's people who actually feel proud of those national holidays.. americans should learn to deal with it.. they don't give you ####### if you wear green on st paddy's day.. even if you're remotely Irish.. but, can't take a mexican flag to school? #######

Yes like the initial illegal immigration protests where they carried Mexican flags.

And it's not about diversity. I will never ever have respect for a group who couldn't care less about integrating into a country. Couldn't care less about learning the language. Couldn't care less about the laws of the nation they have broken into to. Then they have the nerve to parade their flag around.

Wow! You really believe that?

  14. Hola Heather,

Que suenen con los angeles. (F)

  17. Sasa--

I'd update your congressman's rep. I had spoken to mine in November but called again last month after we hadn't heard anything different since they issued the memo. We were told "decision within 90 days."

Maybe that rep. would know what the "third" check is. I know the FBI check looks at lots of agencies. Maybe they were just being specific this time around.

    argg. how irritating.

  18. So either we don't eat and don't get an education or come here illegally.

Any statistics on starvation in Mexico?

I think that sometimes people think that Latin America, and Mexico in particular, is all Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. There is abject poverty. People are willing to risk their lives not because they want to buy a tv for their living rooms; they risk their lives in order to buy basic food staples and provide shelter for their families. Even if you travel just across the san diego border you see people living in conditions that are abominable.

That's not to say that there aren't Americans living in unacceptable conditions. We have to fight to make their lives better as well. However, blaming one group does jack for the other.

the "opportunities" should start here with USC and people who are legally here in the US. The illegals ... sorry ... you broke the law to be here ....

I can't remember the statistics on this one. Something about how a small percentage of americans make a majority of the money in the US. Anyone know the numbers?

This is what makes them happy, keeping those of us who are not wealthy fighting over the scraps they throw down to us. As long as we keep fighting each other nothing real ever happens. It's all about the art of distraction.

  19. So either we don't eat and don't get an education or come here illegally.

  20. My father-in-law came to the US on a work visa in the 70's to work in the US port system. He stayed for a few years and made enough money to return home and open his own business. He had never intended on staying in the US because he had a thriving city to return to.

I think there are a lot of immigrants (undocumented and documented) who would rather come to the US for a few months of the year for work and then return to their communities of origin. However, that is not an option since the border is only minimally open to unskilled workers. People bring their families here because they miss them and can't risk not being able to return to the US after a visit home. Why can't we nurture a program that supports work visas? If you have a legal visa, the government can regulate wages and benefits. That would protect people who come here just for work from abusive employers. It would also protect American workers as these jobs would have to pay basic wages and benefits (preventing artificially lowered wages).

I'm sure that a large number of undocumented folks would prefer a system that allowed them to return to their communities of origin periodically while also ensuring them a way to support their families.

On the other hand, their are many people who are already here with established communities and families. I don't think it would be fair to say, "Well, I know we've let you develop your life here and raise your children here, but now we changed our mind, so get out." I think we had to consider humanitarian options for these families. Destroying established family systems helps no one.

Bien hecho ustedes
