  1. Bring along a professional interpreter- if that's too spendy (usually is), bring along the uncle!!! I don' think they would allow you to act as the interpreter due to conflict of interest.... sad but true.

    Good luck, buena suerte!!!!!

    L.

I interpreted for my husband, but that was in 2004 in San Diego. Our interviewer was originally from the Phillipines. He asked questions slowly so my husband could answer a few on his own, but mostly I talked.

  2. 3 out of the top 4 posts are about Dems....have been started by Gary....

There is an incredible number of stories about Obama's flaws. I pass up far more than I post. It seems the media has finally stopped worshiping Obama and has started seeing him for what he is. The chances of an Obama presidency are going down by the day.

I haven't thought he's had a chance since day one...but mainly because people will only see skin color, and will obsess about his name.

Honestly though Gary, it's not like the Republicans are 100% behind their man either. How many times just on VJ have I heard that someone who votes Republican won't be voting this fall? hmmm, even YOU said that at one point.

Maybe this division in both parties will lead us away from the 2 party system. Dunno.

On the other hand, all of my friends who voted for Clinton in the primary have said they will vote for Obama in the fall. I don't know if all is lost. There will of course be people who will not vote for him b/c of the color of his skin and his name, but are the majority of those people Democrats anyway? Obama has raised more money than any other primary candidate-ever. That has to be a good sign.

  3. I don't know who Chris Matthews is - he sounds like quite the guy though.

He has a show called Hardball on MSNBC. He's an Obama supporter but I kind of wish he'd stop talking about it...

He doesn't help the cause. He's more irritating and embarassing than anything. I'm an Obama supporter, but I don't agree with trashing Clinton based on her gender. I don't mind people taking jabs at her politics and negative campagn style however...

Here's a link the NYTimes magazine article about him. It's long but page 1 describes him pretty well.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/13/magazine...amp;oref=slogin

  4. What a wierd accusation. I haven't read/heard anything that leads me to believe that one of Barack's faults is sexism.

I don't he deserves it at all. But some of his supporters/the media clearly do. Chris Matthews is the first that springs to mind.

I agree. chris matthews has been incredibly offensive. It's surprising how far he's permitted to go on mainstream media. I understand people spewing on talk radio, but shouldn't he be called out for it?

I'm hoping that this open discussion will encourage people like Matthews to look at themselves and engage in a bit of self-reflection. Maybe he'll look at why he says what he says and how it impacts his own daughters.

Maybe it's better that it's out in the open. Then we can address it directly.

  10. Crossed the border Sunday at the Detroit Tunnel.

Was reassured MULTIPLE TIMES by the incompetent dipshit who processed my visa (his first ever K visa processing! yay!) and by the senior guys there that the entry stamp (with expiration date) on my I-94 WAS the work authorization. Over and over when I asked over and over they said yes, you can work on this, it's the right stamp.

Now I'm struggling through my EI application and reading the EI thread it says the stamp is supposed to say 'authorized to work until ____' and while I have two stamps, one on the visa and one on the stapled I-94, they are identical stamps that state what day I entered and when the visa and I-94 expire.

So Customs swore up and down that this would allow me to work for the duration of my visa (aka 90 days) but I do not see anything that says 'authorized to WORK' and I am once again having a spaz.

Sunday was a day of hell thanks to the complications of going through Windsor instead of just flying straight from Toronto, and if I went through all this (which stressed me out enough to be having some fun reccurring medical problems that have me in extreme pain, and they won't go away until I'm not stressed anymore) for nothing my head is going to pop off.

Sorry to be so negative, but I did not appreciate being grilled for 1.5 hrs by a goddamn stupid ### who knew less about the visa process than I did ("You can cross the border as many times as you want before the 90 days expires, but if you try after the 90 days is up, you will self-deport." UH SAY WHAT?! ONE TIME VISA CROSSING, YOU #######!) and having him insult my fiance's reasons for messaging me online and state that TWO YEARS was not long enough to get married, and grill me on why I broke up with my last boyfriend-- I did NOT appreciate being treated that way. It was totally unncessary and unforgivably rude.

Someone please help me out with the stamp question? :help:

When my husband and I crossed the border in 2004, the officer wouldn't even take our k-1 packet. I told him that he needed to and he was incredibly mean and told us to just cross over. Obviously that was wrong so we went back to the border 3 days later and then went through the proper process. They treated our case as though we had just crossed that day for the first time. It sounds like it wouldn't be very convenient for you to go back to the POE. That worked for us, but I lived only 1.5 hrs from the border. Otherwise, I'm not sure what can be done.

Another time when we crossed with my mother-in-law, an official told us that my mother-in-law's one entry visitor's visa was a multiple entry visa (It was sooo not and luckily we knew that). The airport officers seem to know a lot more that than the border officers.

I'm sorry they were so horrible to you.

  11. Mountain of paperwork.....that's funny.

Not sure what it is like in other state's but Virginia is very very strict on the paperwork they require to get a driver's license, it took me a few months to get what they wanted together and then they would only give me one for a year. The lady at the DMV said they really tighted up after Sept 11. It is crazy, but I do understand it, just frustrating when the DMV is so busy to begin with lol.

At least they are a state that lets you hand over your old license and get a new one without having to do any testing.

Good luck getting your DL renewed without an EAD or Green Card. They will not accept receipts in the Northern VA area.

Hi... they did. My husband got his updated DL ( GOOD FOR 11 MONTHS) this morning. We were happy

That's great news. It's great when bureaucratic systems actually go our way.

  12. Well I didn´t have a clue how useless the U.S. health insurance system is before I got here. Such a thing that happened to Chris and Gretchen would never happen to them in my country cuz there is no such a thing like being uncoverable. I feel for them (F) In U.S. you can even have insurance for something and later on you can find out that specific thing you needed your insurance to cover has been removed from your health coverage by the insurance company. Just like that.

They obviously weren´t looking for your don´t have sex before marriage advice since they are married. They were looking for an insurance that would cover them and the pregnancy. Abortion isn´t a name of a health insurance plan at any company so that´s not an advice you should be giving either. Having a baby is a blessing and abortion isn´t an option for many people. When the parents don´t even consider something like that, you shouldn´t be even mentioning it. It pretty much shows what kind of a person you are.

Hopefully Chris and Gretchen will still be able to find some health insurance, that will cover them (F) And Congratulations guys :) I know you are excited about having a baby together

Hi, we are still very excited to have a baby.

First alot of the insurance companies wouldnt insure Gretchen because she hadnt been in the USA for 11 of the last 12 months. Almost all did not offer ANY maternity icoverage. And i couldnt get it for me and her until we were married. She arrived in USA March 16th and we got married May 8th. we found out we were preggy about 4 days before we got married. I became self employed just last year and didnt have health insurance for the past year. I figured i would get it for us both as soon as we got married and even if i had it , it would have been an individual policy which means there is every loophole in the book for the insurance company to not cover anything. It seems group insurance is the way to go.

I have since learned that most just pay the pregnancy costs out of pocket so that is what we will do. i am told its $4000-$8000 for a normal pregnancy and up to $20,000 for a complicated one. There are two hopsitals that have cash programs to pay it and we will do one of them. I am hoping to get group insurance with my business in the next few months and then we will have insurance, but nothing will be covered on the pregnancy.

    Chris

Make sure to apply for the discounted price, if the hospital offers one.

Also, I know it would be quite stressful, but you could take a part-time (20 hrs/wk) job at a place that offers insurance for part-time workers, like Starbucks. UPS does too, but that's quite a bit of heavy lifting. I know there are others out there. They would cover both you and your wife.

Another option is to look into a state program that covers pregnant woman, no matter their status. However, as you filed the Affidavit of support... that might only be worth it if you guys were really desperate and couldn't cover the private costs.

I hope her pregnancy will be smooth and easy. wishing you well.

  13. My fiancee has been denied a visitor visa because she is divorced. Can she cross the border and get married in a texas town without a visa. She has a mexican passport. If so is it better to get married first and then file for a K-3 visa or just file the K-1 visa and wait.. Thanks for the help.. Terry

She wouldn't be able to cross without a visa. K-1 and K-3 both take time, but I don't know if one is quicker. You could search previous posts where people posed the same question: K-1 vs. K-3.

  14. Even with the February memo things aren't super fast. We hit the 4 year waiting mark this past April 1st. Our case has been on an officer's desk in Seattle since March 14 and we haven't heard. We were told in late April that we would have a decision within 90 days. That message came through our Senator's office.

I think there may be further delays for those of us who applied for AOS through our local offices rather than through the Chicago lock box. I don't remember when that change was.

dunno... It's a world of waiting...

  15. Carina,

  18. We have a two party system. Libertarians always lose. Bob Barr is goofy. Ron Paul got no traction because alot of his ideas were unrealistic. So really I have a choice between two Socialists and a so-called Republican who espouses views I dont agree with. Having the right to vote doesnt mean we should exercise it irresponsibly. It looks like Obama will win. If that's what people want, we get what we deserve. At the end of his term, I predict we will be further in debt, the country wont be unified, the Palestinians will still be occupied, we will still be in Iraq, our standing internationally will further decline, the Iranians will take adavantage of perceived weakness. the energy crisis wont be remedied, social security and medicare fixes will be passed to future adminstrations and we will all be paying more taxes without having universal health care.

:P You forgot curing cancer too.

It was FDR's New Deal that turned this country around after the Great Depression. He started out not believing that government could help many of the problems of the Depression like Hoover but soon came to the conclusion that the government can and does have a stake in lives of its citizens.

    Good point.

I have a few evangelical and non-evangelical Christians in my family (I see the distinction as those who believe in proselytizing the faith and those who do not). Although the evangelicals in my family are against abortion and opposed to gay marriage, they are much more focused on reducing poverty, protecting the environment and ensuring human rights for all people. There has been a schism in the evangelical movement as people coming up have challenged the historical narrowness of the focus. The movement, led by many young people, is turning to the AIDS crisis and to environmentalism. A great effort has been put into mitigating the international AIDS crisis by evangelicals as it effects millions of souls already living on this earth. Many evangelicals believe that we are endebted to the earth as a gift from God and are responsible for caring for it and for "all God's creatures." Isn't that what they teach in Sunday school, anyway?

I think there are a lot of people, like one of the previous posters, who feel stuck between two parties. Because although they see abortion as a moral issue, they also see caring for the poor and our environment as moral issues as well.

  19. Hola diablilla y bienvenida,
