  1. Is this where I have to report foreign bank accounts when I file my taxes for the first time? Do I have to report them if I have under $10,000 overseas? I plan to only keep a UK account open with £2.50 or so in it since it won't charge me to keep it open. Am I also right in thinking I won't have to report until next year if I get a job soon? Arrived in the US November 29 2022 EAD Approved Feb 21 2023 I don't think I have to file anything this year?
  2. Basically the title. I've transferred around $35,000 into my US account before i-485 is approved. Will I have to pay tax on this again or declare it when filing taxes next year?
  3. This happened to me but weirdly they reversed it and sent the visa anyway. The timeline was as follows: 21 October - I had the interview, got a 221(g) and asked to submit the divorce certificate of my partner (the petitioner) 25 October - My visa was issued (without my knowledge) 26 October - I submit the divorce certificate they had asked for, courier told me it would be with them in a day. 27 October - I received the visa in the post, issue date 25th October. They returned the divorce certificate to me with a sticky note saying "Visa had already been sent out", I can't remember the date but it was probably the end of October. So I think they should process it fairly fast when you send it.
  4. 1. For shipping I used this company - https://www.sevenseasworldwide.com/ - It's a very straight forward door to door service, they deliver the boxed and provide bubble wrap, parcel tape, even a marker pen for the boxes. I only shipped a few boxes however. There are probably cheaper services around but I'm glad I used these. 2. Start reading up on the Adjustment of Status paperwork. You can file employment authorization (i-765) and advanced parole (i-131) WITH your adjustment of status package if you want to free of charge where normally they would be additional charge. I didn't bother with the i-131 because I don't want it. employment authorization has taken 6-8 months for people over the last year I think but it seems a lot of people now including myself are getting approved the day of doing their biometrics (USCIS will schedule this for you when they process your case, you'll probably do it around a month after submitting your AOS package). 3. Go to a social security office 2 weeks after you arrive into the US and request a social security number. You can do this before you are married, but should wait 2 weeks after arriving so you're on their system. You'll need to take your passport and your i-94 which can be accessed here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home ('Need A History Of Your Arrivals & Departures?' -> 'View travel history', wait until you arrive in the US to grab this) Also open a bank account if you can, try to get some proof of residency (I got added to my wife's lease), maybe get a driver license. If you get added to your spouses credit card you may start to be able to build a credit history.
  5. You'll be fine. I was asked for the i-134 at the embassy. So I'd advise having it signed and completed by your fiance and taking it with you. On another note I hate to think how much you're spending on flights if you've taken 32 in the span of 2 years lol. Edit: I just looked at your time line, hope your interview went well 🙂
  6. If you have scheduled the interview and completed the DS-160 you must also schedule a medical with visa medicals in london https://visamedicals.co.uk/ You'll need to schedule it at least 2 weeks before your interview date. When you schedule it they will send you an email listing everything you need to take with you so you can prepare, which is: ORIGINAL PASSPORT 4 X Identical Passport style photos - UK or US size ACRO Police certificate (or a copy) dated within the last 24 months Vaccination records Completed medical questionnaire which can be found at; https://uk.usembassy.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/16/2017/05/USA-MEDICAL-QUESTIONNAIRE_IV.pdf (I'm copying this from my email, wait to get the confirmation from them in case there's an updated one) A Letter/Email from the embassy/NVC to confirm your case number and visa category Summary of medical history from GP If you wear glasses or contact lenses please bring them along to the appointment If you have any significant/ongoing/previous medical conditions (i.e depression/cancer, HIV etc) please ensure that you bring a report from your GP/Specialist/Consultant regarding this; including, medication, prognosis, management etc. (this includes conditions such as depression, anxiety, diabetes, hypertension etc). Go to the medical, get any vaccines required, then go to your interview 2 weeks later. You'll need to take your DS-160 printout (just the summary cover with your photo and the barcode) with you to the embassy along with your appointment confirmation letter. Something I haven't seen mentioned on this site is that it can take a long time to clear the queue at the London embassy, took me about an hour in the main queue outside. So I would aim to arrive in London (if you're not based there) 2 hours before your appintment to give yourself plenty of time.
  7. You can find them here: https://www.cdc.gov/immigrantrefugeehealth/pdf/vaccine-requirements-according-to-applicant-age-p.pdf You'll need to get a copy of your NHS vaccination record (as well as a patient summary) to take with you, you'll likely have some of the vaccines already. I had to get 3 vaccines at the medical appointment and it added an extra £110 to the price.
  8. 1. Yes it's Knightsbridge Doctors but they're also known as Visa Medicals and have this site - https://visamedicals.co.uk/ and this is how I contacted them. The first reference to 'Knightsbridge Doctors' I ever saw was it showing up as that on my bank statement. In fact on the Knightsbridge Doctors website you will see they don't even list 'United States' under the immigration medical menu. Arrange the medical for at least 2 weeks before visa interview. 2. They will send your medical exam to the consulate. For K-1 you don't need to get the required vaccines and have the option to get them in the US before adjusting your status, but in my opinion it's much better to get all the required vaccines at your medical so it's one less thing to worry about later.
  9. I ask because lots of stuff that shows up on USPS informed delivery hasn't been arriving for around 1-2 weeks and I'm nervous about the card getting 'lost in the mail'
  10. Are people really doing this without having actually met? That seems like a terrible idea..
  11. EAD has now been approved. Filed: 01/25/2023 Biometrics scheduled: 02/04/2023 Biometrics appointment: 02/21/2023 EAD Approved: 02/21/2023
  12. Biometrics completed. Showed up 30 minutes early expecting to be turned away but they were not busy at all and just did it there and then. Case status changed to "Case Is Being Actively Reviewed By USCIS" so I guess I won't be one of the lucky people to get an EAD card immediately.
  13. I wouldn't put in notice until you have the visa in hand
  14. I arrived in the US and applied for an SSN 2 weeks later, got the one that says VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION (or something like that) on it. When filling out the i-485 I checked the box asking if I want them to issue me an SSN (and also included my SSN whereever it asked for it). Because I want the card without the DHS text on it. But I also checked the same box on the i-765 "Do you want the SSA to issue you a Social Security card?". Is there any harm in having done this? Will they just send 2 new cards if approved? Or as filing together only issue one?
  15. I've never been married and we have no kids. My interview was 510 days from the initial NOA1 date. You might get lucky but it's generally a long process. Good luck.
  16. Ah, I wasn't sure. They asked me for it and made a scan, I guess they must have gave it back to me - I couldn't remember if they did that or sent it to the embassy.
  17. Isn't this supposed to be submitted to the London Embassy by the people who do the medical?
  18. Not sure where you're from but in the US the passport photo is 2 x 2 inches I'm from the UK and the standard is 45 millimetres ( mm ) high by 35mm wide I used one of those passport photobooths and it gave the option to print photos for visas where I could select the US and it printed me US spec photos. Try to meet their standard of 2 x 2 inches.
  19. From what I remember immediately after completing it you should see a page that you can download or print that contains a barcode you will need. You might be able to access it here https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/ by retrieving your application. Mine was also emailed to me from DO-NOT-REPLY@STATE.GOV - maybe check your junk also. It's also possible your typod your email on the form perhaps.
  20. This is interesting to me because I had assumed when putting the package together that phone records and texts were encouraged because they want to see how you talk to each other. I struggled to find many appropriate chats that seemed worth screenshotting but I got some of us planning vacations, flights etc - and screenshots of my call logs showing we call every day etc. I definitely regretted that I didn't keep my boarding passes when assembling the packet (some were destroyed, some were just digital passes on my phone that expired) and dind't have receipts of much. We submitted maybe 40-50 photos of us together which I wrote the date and a description on the back, I wanted to do this because the i-129f form asks you to list the times you've met in the last 2 years which I think was only once at the time, but we had actually met I think 4 times at this point in different cities / countries so I felt the photos were good evidence. I did submit my US passport stamps, we also met in Ireland but I didn't get a stamp for that (maybe because there's free travel between UK - Republic of Ireland or something I'm not sure).
  21. I was asked for the divorce certificate and I didn't have it so they rejected me and gave me a form 221(g) telling me to mail in the divorce certificate. So my partner obtained a new certified copy, sent it to me in the UK, I sent it to the embassy, but the day before it was delivered my visa was in the mail. They returned the certificate to me with a note that says "visa had already been sent out" so in my opinion they must have reviewed my case and discovered that we had submitted the divorce certificate in our original packet. I would advise you bring it though.
  22. I suspect (someone correct me if I'm wrong) the police certificate should be in the folder they give you to turn over to immigration when you enter the country. There's always the slim chance this can be lost though. I don't expect to need to use a police certificate in the AOS process (mine is currently pending) but I did spend an extra £6 to get an extra police certificate when I got it, just in case it proves useful in the future.
  23. I can't be 100% sure but I think I filled mine out after getting the NOA2 and before hearing anything from the London embassy to schedule an appointment.
  24. I personally did carefully remove the staple, and completely removed the I-485 (which had a wrong checkbox checked), then used paper fastners to fasten back the forms to how they originally were, printed a new i-485 and added that to the packet, destroyed the original cover letter and printed a new one because I wanted to amend it, assembled the packet with the green letter on the top then sent it back. This time they accepted it and sent a notice that they received it, hopefully it will be okay but I always expect to get RFE'd on something but I'll be happy if I don't.
