  1. Hi friends

It's been a long time since I've posted here and I've gotten myself into a silly situation.

I came in to the US from Canada on a K-1 Visa, in Dec 2008. Married Feb '09. I got my 2 yr green card with no prob, but when it came time to get my permanent resident card we were asked to submit more documentation and then we had to go for an interview. The day after the interview, early March of 2012, I got a letter saying I was approved. Months passed and I never received my green card. I went in to USCIS around this time last year as I was traveling to Canada for my dad's wedding. I filled out the form to request a replacement of my card that I never got. (we did not move in that time so I don't know why I didn't get it). In the meantime she stamped my passport which is good for a year (until Feb 2014) for me to travel. I got a letter back from USCIS saying that my green card hadn't been returned to them so I must have lost it and needed to fill out the form saying it was lost or stolen, pay the $450. I didn't have that kind of money so I just forgot about it until now.

Now I am planning on going to Jamaica in March for a family wedding. Is that enough time to get citizenship? OR should I suck it up, pay the $450 and ask for a replacement green card, get another stamp in the meantime saying I can travel?

Thanks in advance for any advice in this matter.

  2. Is there any reason for you to not go and do any of that now? It only takes a phone call to add your name to utility bills. And then you have to wait for the next one to be sent to you...

You only share a savings account? That seems a bit odd. Does neither of you have a checking account? If you don't want to go and open a new joint checking account, you can add the other person to an old one. We went and added each other to both of our bank accounts. So we had the European bank and the American bank documentation to show at our AOS interview.

If one of you has a retirement plan (401k/etc.) or life insurance, list the other as a beneficiary. That's the simplest kind of "will". But you should also be able to download a form off the net and make up something quick. You don't need a lawyer, although it won't be as legally sound.

In general, its kind of dangerous to have one person do all the financial things and the other not know anything about it...

Just because my name isn't on the bills doesn't mean I don't know about them. We both work, we both have our own checking accounts (at different banks) I opened mine at the same bank I was using in Canada.

I do believe I am listed as his beneficiary on his 401K, and I think that was one of the things we sent in.

  3. Hey everyone

I have a question I need some help with.

We've been married almost three years, we sent in the stuff to have the conditions removed from my green card, but it wasn't enough evidence. They requested for us to send more, which we did, but apparently that's still not enough, so now we have an appointment to have an interview. Anyone have any advice about this? The evidence we lack is stuff we simply don't have. We have a joint savings account that we just opened in November. We've got joint taxes, and our lease agreement signed by both of us, we've also got a car in both our names, but everything else is in his name. I am on his health insurance. I moved into his apartment and we figured there was no point in changing any of the bills into both of our names until we got a house, which we still haven't done and originally I had thought we would have by now. We don't have wills because we've got nothing to leave to anyone. We sent in 5 affidavits of support from friends.

any advice would be greatly appreciated. Our appointment is in the first week of March. anything we could do between now and then would be great.

    thanks so much

  4. Hey everyone.

I have been kind of out of the loop and now I need your help again.

We got married Feb 28 2009 and I got my 2yr green card shortly after. I know we are supposed to start the process of filing for removal of conditions 90 days before the 2yr mark. That's coming up in about a month.

What do I need to do?

Please point me in the right direction.

    Thank you so much

  5. Hi everyone

I am Canadian, and originally came into the US on a work visa for a couple years.

Moved back to Canada while we did the immigration process and was married almost a year ago (2/28/09) In early March I went to the SS office to change my name on the card to my married name. They said it was too early and I needed to wait for my green card. I got the green card at the end of May and went back to the SS office to file the paperwork.

In August or September, I called SS and they said the paperwork was still being processed but that it was ok to use my married name with my SS# on my tax documents for work. The lady I spoke with said it could take a while because they have to send the documents back and forth through Canada....

Fast forward to now, we filed our taxes doing E-file, and it bounced back saying that the name on file does not match. How long should it take? I am going to call SS again on Monday and find out what is going on, but it just seems like this should have been finished a lot sooner. Anyone with similar experience please help.

  6. So almost 2 weeks ago I sent off the forms for the adjustment of status, employment authorization and advanced parole. We got back from our honeymoon last night and all 3 NOAs were here, along with my appointment notification for the biometrics.

Can anyone tell me what to expect at the biometrics?

Thanks! I'm so excited to be at this stage of everything. I can't wait till I can be out of the house and working. It'll be so much less boring.

  7. Hi all

I just got married and am now in the process of filling out all the forms for AOS.

Is it necessary to fill out the G 325 A form (biographical info) AGAIN?

And, on the AOS form is asks for class of admission. is that where i would put K-1?

and also what is the I 94 # (what is the I 94?) Is it the little cardboard paper in my passport?

I've read through the instructions on all the forms and this is what I still need cleared up. Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, you have to fill out the form 325 again. It should be different, since you live at a new address now.

K-1 is your class of admission.

Your I-94 is the paper they attached to your passport at the POE, yes.

Thank you so much. I had a feeling you would be the one who answered. I went and got the new passport photos taken today and had the other things photocopied.

So can I mail all the forms and supporting documents all in one envelope to the relevant USCIS office?

  9. No problem, the 3 forms needed are:

    I-130, I-485, I-765

And for the adjustment of status application, you need to again prove that your husband can support you, by providing tax documents, letter from work, etc. It's almost like doing the original affidavit of support ALL over again. Fun times

thanks, we still have all the original info together here so we should be ok.

Thanks so much. I will get on that right away

  10. You now need to apply for Adjustment of Status/Advance Parole/Employment Auth Document.... the cost is $1010 for all 3. If you read the guides above there are sample forms and you can get all the forms on USCIS website. Read the "adjustment of status" guide, it has all the info you need.

Oh and congrats on your marriage!

Thanks. $1010..sheesh! like this whole process isnt expensive enough already

It's awful! And of course you have to pay to get more photos taken, and in 2 years pay again to remove conditions.... they never stop gouging us!

can you tell me the forms by # so I know which ones to download? sorry, its kinda confusing

  12. YAY for small town Albertans!

I was born and raised in the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta.

Went to Red Deer College and then to Edmonton to U of A

Interesting fact about the Crowsnest Pass, we had the busiest 7-11 in Alberta being that it was pretty much the last stop for gas, slurpees and food for about an hour (if you were following hiway 3 to BC)

Also we have the Frank Slide.

  13. Hello Everyone

It has been a long time since I have posted. I moved to the US in December on my K-1 and we just got married on Saturday. We have the marriage certificate back already (yay for it being super fast!) but I need to know what I need to do next. Can someone please direct me to the next form I need so that I can start working and travelling.

    Thanks everyone!

best of luck at your wedding. and you have found the best website for answering all your visa related questions.

  18. wahooooooooo

crossed the border at Cornwall, ON on saturday. we were at the border for about half an hour. They aren't used to processing many visas there since its a smaller crossing. They asked when the wedding was going to be and they took my finger prints. otherwise it was good. no hassle at all. yay!!!!! and, before we crossed, i stopped to pick up my wedding dress!!!!!!!!!!! whoooo 82 days till the wedding!!!!!!! so much to do. but at least i am finally home with my man!

  19. ok so this is a very long thread. can someone point me to the exact place where it tells me when and how to apply for EI. thanks so much
