Ok so what about the document they mentioned at the ceremony that will be mailed (Suppose to be the judges approval for name change). Do I have to wait for this first to get anything else done besides voting? Thanks.

So far no one asked me name change document other than Visa for my home country where they do not allow dual nationality. SSN office and DMV did not ask for name change document. In my state, both SSN office and DMV accepts naturalization certificate for proof of name change.

  2. It depends on then state of residence. Check your state elections website to see if there is still time to register.

In my state Ohio, you can register to vote by going to board of elections office but will not be fully verified as SSN is not updated with new name.

But still will be able to cast a provisional ballot.

Recommend you to call your county board of elections office.

Order of update depends on state again. In my state DMV was not able to give compliant drivers license for me till I update my name change with SSN. So, I updated SSN first and then went to DMV again to get complaint drivers license.

  3. Here is timeline of completed renunciation timeline for New York.

Application delivered by UPS to CKGS -  Thursday, 8/27/2020

Confirmation of receipt of package by CKGS - 8/31/2020

Application verified by CKGS and sent to Consulate for decision - 8/31/2020

Renunciation certificate received from consulate and preparing for dispatch - 9/8/2020

Renunciation certificate and cancelled passport delivered by UPS - 9/9/2020.

Just thought of sharing my time line for others to get an idea on how long it is taking for renunciation.

  4. Thought of sharing how name change process works during naturalization process. This is my experience and what I know about this process. Feel free to comment if you think the process is not correct.

We can opt for name change at the time of applying for N-400. We can either change complete name or just last name.

During the Naturalization interview, immigration officer goes through your N-400 form and asks again whether you want to change your name. If you answer yes again, immigration officer will give the USCIS form N-662 (Petition for name change) to sign the document during the interview. Ensure your new name is printed on how you wanted it and sign it and immigration officer will take the form. Immigration officer will then send the form to District court to file and get the approval as the district court is the one who decides whether to approve or not.

At the time of oath ceremony, your new name will be printed on Naturalization certificate and they will also give the original name change document.

Ensure to ask the immigration officer to get name change document (if they forget to give one) at the Oath ceremony as it is mandatory to update your name at multiple agencies like Banks, Visas for other countries etc.

Hope this helps and all the Best.

I’m also dealing with the same situation here. I’m in TX. I cannot update Driver License until Social is updated but their office has been closed for months due to covid.

Has anyone one in TX been able to register to vote without updating social or dl?

Each state is different and how their voter registration is tied to Citizenship is also different .

As a first step, you can try registering online. If that does not work, try walk-in to your county board of elections office and show your Naturalization Certificate and they may allow you to register.

  6. It is called N-662 form (Petition for name change document).  When you call USCIS, tell them that you did not receive your N-662 form during naturalization (if you haven't received ONE) so that they can raise a service request or help you to get N-662 form.

If you lost it, then you have to request a certified copy of the N-662 form and was told it will be given by district court if they have it in their records.

I was told sometimes it will be in the USCIS envelop they give us during oath ceremony.

@B & H Good..I was wondering if the info I provided helped or not. Hope it works out for you :) All the best.

I contacted the district court where the USCIS office located and Naturalization Ceremony happened. Clerk was very helpful and they contacted the USCIS office and got the certificate. It is called Form N-662 (petition for name change document). Received the certificate today. Lucky to get it very quickly and I am very grateful to the prompt response of the district court clerk.

Thank you all for your help too.

    What state? Quote your source.

The only reporting that SSA returns to the state or county, is whether that person's SSN is alive or deceased.

Ohio. I tried online and got a message stating that I am not a US citizen as per BMV records (in my state it is called Bureau of Motor Vehicles, BMV)and then went to BMV to register. I submitted my form to them and was told that it may take a week to update online.

If there is a name change, even BMV can not update the records as SSN and new name do not match (If SSN office is not updated with new name and SSN). But you can go to Board of elections office in your county to register by showing naturalization certificate.

Each and every state is different and how their databases linked with voter system also works differently.

Not what I was told. I was told I might not be able to register to vote without the update at SS.

Did you try registering online. In my state, I will not be able to do online registration with out updating SSN office about immigration status. I think you can still register to vote if you go to DMV office or Board of elections office in your county. If there is name change during naturalization, things become little more complicated.

How did you change your name? Via a judicial process or during same day oath? You must have received a slip of paper that says your name change has been approved. I am not sure how this works, but I agree, the entire process of applying for renunciation and OCI is a nightmare.

Mine was administrative oath. Immigration officer told me that the change is only last name to married name no need of judicial oath and did not give any other document.

  11. Hi Thank you all for your posts. It’s really helpful.

have a question regarding family name change to married name during naturalization. I changed my last name from maiden to married name but no change in first name. My naturalization certificate is printed with new last name. I did not get any other document for name change.

Now when I want to apply for Indian citizenship renunciation. They are asking for proof of name change. Not sure how to get that. Any one gone through this situation. Any help is appreciated.
