Now we have a trip to Germany planned in June, does he need his american passort to travel or can we save the expense for now and still travel in and out with his German pass? hmmmm

UPDATE! 255 euros have been paid (waiting to receive receipt). Consulate emailed they have the BBG just a matter of picking it up w/ proof of payment. And, Oath in 1.5 weeks.

UPDATE... just received an email from USCIS.... saying "On February 16, 2012, we scheduled you for your oath ceremony and sent a notice providing the date, time, and location." (they are either not recieving our postponment letters in time or perhaps ignoring them)

Now how long will the consulate take to receive those papers from Koeln? And contact us to pick it up?

I remember reading that oath rescheduling took months.... This is proof all cases are different.

SOOOO NERVE-WRECKING! Yes, he was told NOT to take the oath until BBG was in hand because it becomes effective only when in hand. We had written a letter to USCIS asking for a long postponment which went on def ears the first time... lets see this time. Wonder when consulate will tell him to pick up BBG or if it will be mailed and how we can pay for it in Euros.

UPDATE!

Last night opened mail box to a letter from USCIS saying: "You were scheduled to appear.... at 8:30am. Our records indicate you failed to appear.... You will be notified by USCIS of the date, place and time of your reschduled Oath..." SO I GUESS WE WAIT FOR A NEW DATE.

Tonight (2 hours ago) husband opened opeend his email to find a letter from koeln saying: "Ihrem Antrag habe ich stattgegeben und eine Beibehaltungsurkunde gefertigt. Die Urkunde habe ich heute an das Generalkonsulat in.... gesandt. Von dort werden Sie weitere Nachricht erhalten."

THERFORE BBG APPROVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS!!!!!!!!?????? So quick! We are so excited! We hope instructions come quick and the next oath ceremony follows.

We can't thank you enough for all your help and support during this process.

still waiting for that letter in the mail... hmmm i too believe our postponment letter did not get to them on time.

UPDATE! Postponed oath and it was rescheduled for February 7th....(so soon, go figure!) therefore we sent a letter postponing again... and we received and email saying "you falied to attend..." "you will receive instructuions on how to proceed in the mail" ARE WE IN TROUBLE? Does anyone know how many times you can postpone? Our postponment letter did say we are waiting on an answer from Germany.

OH! and BBG was submitted this week... finally :-)

I am one of the examples: Being born in Germany to Non-German parents and hence, being a Non-German citizen. Before becoming a US citizen, it was really a pain just to visit Germany. Although I was born there, I had to apply for a visa every time I went to Germany, even if I just made a transit stop at a German airport. I recall getting a 5-day visa (yes, I am not kidding, a 5-day visa) to attend my brother's wedding over there. Now, after becoming a US citizen, life is much easier for me since with the visa-waiver program I can go there to see my brother without a visa at all. I buy my ticket and I am good to go.

Spoke to uscis, explained our situation and they said to send for a postponement. Went to consulate they explained the BBG rules but did not give much hope on reason for wanting to obtain USC :-( he explained his parents are getting old and he is an only child and would have to take care of them. Still we r still applying.

My husbands dad owns a business in Germany and if he is too old or sick (he has some health issues) then my husband would have to go run the business. We r having his dad send us a company letter.... Do u think this is a good enough reason? Bob? Brother? What else can we put.

Thanks brother and all! Husband is working on his bbg now. As for oath postponement... We were/are gonna call uscis and inquire. However, after research and thus stated in the appt letter (N 445) we need to send them back the letter with a written excuse as to why he can not attend the oath. Our worry is that his oath is THIS thursday so we hope we r not TOO late to post postpone... you think? Also, will a letter asking for postponement of about 3 or 4 months due to family illness be a good enough excuse or will they need details? Just wondering how long they can postpone for and are they so willing to comply.

it is pretty nice when you can keep both.i loose mine as soon as i become US citizen.

Thanks all. After all our research sometimes seems like its just easier to forget about the USC since getting a BBG seems difficult. . If we decide this then who do we contact? Or just not show up for oath? So stressed.

WOW! My husband and I cant thank you guys enough for all this great information. Thank you, thank you! Here is another question, since we are the most honest people, we wondered: Is it ok to call USCIS and postpone oath with the real excuse? I simply want to postpone because I am waiting on Germany to approve some document before I can become a USC... postpone say 6 mths? Or, should we not be so honest because they might feel like too bad.... should have had the facts before you applied....? We feel so ignorant right now.

OMG! I hope its the oath... cause the letter states "the process is not complete until you take the oath" We now know it is too late fill out the BBG. We are thinking going to the ceremony and stating our issue and not taking the oath... see what they suggest. And/or going to the German embassy/consulate first thing on Monday and getting some direction from them. (now not sure if an appt is needed to visit the embassy) SO sad. thanks for your response. Also, what would you do. NOT showing up to the oath seems so wrong.

ATTENTION GERMAN FILERS! Will applying for US citizenship result in losing your German citizenship? My husband is taking his oath next week and someone just pointed this out to us. Also, what will the consequense of not taking the oath be? SOOOO STRESSED!

My husband is German and applied for citizenship in the US and will be taking his oath next week. Will he lose his German citizenship after he takes this oath? Can't he just have dual citizenship?

Interview went well and oath date set for January. My husbands appointment was at 9:20am and we arrived at 8:40am.... went to window 3 then he went uptairs I had to wait downstairs. We left at 12:22pm.... ALOMST 4 hours! There were so many people. Just glad all went well but very surprised it took so long.
