I would check in with your local laws about it. All name change laws (except the citizenship exception) go via local courts in each state. There may be some loophole that if one's spouse changes their name, then the other can adopt that...I've just never heard of it happening before. Check with your local state laws regarding name changes.

Thank you for your advice, my wife was able to change her last name with my local office from the ssa, they only needed all documentations needed to change last name including marriage certificate plus my US Citizenship certificate.

Thank you for your help, I’ll check with my local authorities, also I’ll comment on this post an update after getting answers from them.

I get what you're saying, but I'm not entirely sure she can just "update" her last name based on yours changing at the naturalisation ceremony. Her name is technically whatever is on the marriage certificate. Does the marriage certificate have the same name you will change yours to?

Sorry for the delay. Our marriage certificate doesn’t have the same name I will change to.

So you want to change your name via citizenship, and also have your wife change her name too?

Most likely she has to change her name via a court order if it's not based on a marriage certificate. Is she a US citizen?

    Hi there,

Yes she is a US citizen. I though because she already have my last name because of marriage, she could be able to change her last name after showing to Social Security my new surname on my Naturalization Certifcate.

thank you for comments by the way!

  5. Hi everyone, I’m  on the process of filling my petition to becoming US citizen.

I noticed that I can change my last name on the petition; I always wanted to change my last name because I have the wrong one from my father, so this is a very good opportunity.

but I am married (my wife has my last name because she changed her surname when we got married), and she wants to be able to change her last name along with me too

I wondering if it’s posible for us to go to Social Security Administration and used my new surname  so she could used it on her social security?
