  1. Hey guys, just wanted to know if any of you have had any recent experiences with re-entering the US with the AP document?

I am looking to visit my family in Portugal in July but I'm not sure what the whole current situation is regarding using AP. I know I can enter Portugal and have read on the website traveldoc.aero that I can re-enter the US but just wanted to be sure.

    Thanks!

It is a prediction but only can be accurate if all are imputing their individual experience. You can use it as a gauge but don't be alarmed if it is not accurate but it does give you somewhat of an idea.

Your a prime example why it's not accurate as you have NO timeline. Help the rest of us and complete your profile. Here are the instructions.

Many of our answers are predicated on the information you supply in your profile. When we look at the left column and can't determine your timeline OR your Embassy it's hard for us to give you a factual answer. Our answers will sometimes be tailored to a specific Embassy hence the reason for you to complete your profile. If you look at the profile of others here, they have a flag for their country, so it makes it easy for us to reply as we can quickly determine their Embassy. The country that should be used is the country where the interview will take place.

So, if you could help yourself out and complete your profile that sure would help us out when we want to reply to your question with factual information.

Go to the top right of this page select your name (it's on the upper right-hand corner)>my profile>[below your picture on the right column] edit my profile. Scroll to the bottom and fill in "Immigration Info". There now we can better serve you.

Once you finish that then return and you will see a flag in your profile. Select it and see what wonderful information will open up for you.

    Thanks

I understand that, I have been on VJ for a couple months but I decided I will update my timeline once we file our K1 petition at the end of this month.

I believe that there has been an increase in allocation of manpower by DHS to USCIS, that has resulted in a perceived faster processing of K1 visas. Not certain if the increased manpower was also projected to the DOS. All of these visa processes are akin to a very large river with any number of large dams that control the water flow. The dams that are under USCIS control may be running at a higher efficiency. However, the dams control by DOS may not have benefited from increased manpower.

    :wow:

    Very cool explanation! Haha

But something I don't understand is, these faster processing times are for applications that are pretty straight forward or all of them included? When we read cases that take, let's say 6 months from NOA1 to Interview, is it for applications without RFE, etc etc?

Credit Scores are country-specific, i.e. you CANNOT transfer your credit score from Portugal or any other country to the US, you have to start from scratch in the US. I lived on the UK for 12 years, built a good credit score, but unfortunately that does not transfer over to the US.It will be hard to get a credit card when you move, as you will have no credit history, and before you get your SSN, but it is possible to start building it by getting a secured card. It's kind of like a credit card, but a lot more restrictive. But you can start building you credit score with it. I got one from Bank of America, you don't need to have a bank account with them or a SSN, you just need proof of address in the US. It's going well so far for me, and in a few months I I should be eligible for a normal credit card. Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice! I actually already have an SSN from previous employment in the US, so I am gonna be added to my girlfriend's credit card as an authorized user and start from there.

Piggybacking, look it up. Have your US citizen add you on several  credit cards once you get your SS number. Open a checking account with Capital One. Within six month, apply for a Capital One Platinum Credit Card. Thats how I did it with my wife. Her score is better than mine now. My personal experience.

Sounds good! I already have an SSN from the past so I will ask her to add me.

I bank with US Bank and just got an unsecured CC with no credit history at all in the US. I’m excited because I thought I’d have to get a secured! I have great credit in Canada but was told it cannot be transferred (by a mortgage specialist at US Bank). US required an SSN and proof of residing legally in the states (my K1 visa in my passport) to open the account though 🤷‍♀️. Or at least the employee I dealt with did.

That's great! And before that were you added to your spouse's credit card?

You can only be an authorized user without a social security number.  This technically doesn’t grant credit.

I checked my husband’s credit history a year after he was here and he had some cards that had been mine tied to his credit, though probably incorrectly.  Some showed a credit history for him  going back 10 years. Fortunately, they were all good so it was a benefit for him.  So, like it or not, you’ll get at last some of your spouse’s history right away.

That's true, I'll do that to start with

Does your partner have an address in the US? If so, you can get it now. You don't have to wait until you arrive in the US. I obtained my credit card a few months ago.

She does. So perhaps I can get it now and use it. Since it's attached to a SSN, would it build a credit score?

Why secured?  Wait, arrive, apply for citi or capital one and get an unsecured one.

    What's the advantage?

I have an AMEX platinum. It comes with a hefty fee but the reason I got it was because it came with a welcome bonus that equates to two round trips from Canada to California (where my wife lives in the US) which was more than the annual fee.

That's smart! Been looking at the options and might just get the Amex Blue, since I just need something to make my life easier when I get to the US.
