Which is better when dealing with a car. We are debating whether it’s best to just sell the car? Has anyone gone thru the process and know if it’s cheaper to just sell and buy a used car when he moves?

    from us to Canada

We just moved to Florida from Canada 2 weeks ago. We have a 2016 mazda and we imported it. Paid about $350 for import fees when we entered. Our car had a sticker showing it was emissions approved in the US. If the car is financed you just need a letter from the loan company saying they give you permission to take it to the US. If your car isn't emissions approved and you have to have work done on it to be approved it might be better to sell it.

i wouldn't worry that this has to be corrected immediately

i say it because i have all 3 of my SS cards

1st one has my full name 1st name,  middle name and maiden name

2nd one has 1st name maiden  name and last name (of my late husband)

new one has 2st name middle initial and new last name

and when i applied for DL i just used 1st and last name   (no middle name or initial)

Thank you. I do know Florida (where I am) requires full legal name (so middle names) on your license. That's why I was concerned. I wasn't sure if they wouldn't be ok with my SSN not being correct.

When you call them remind them that their policies say that they should not request Original immigration documents from you via mail and per that policy you need an in-person appointment: https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/05262021015248PM "Do NOT request a non-citizen to submit his or her immigration documents by mail or using the drop box. Due to DHS regulations, non-citizens are required to have their immigration documents in their possession at all times"

    Great thank you!

  4. I got my social security card today and noticed they are missing the last letter on my 2nd middle name.

I looked up what you have to do to correct it and it says you have to fill out a new application and send proof of identity including visa. All social security offices here closed and will only take people by appointment only in an emergency.

They want you to mail your identification. Problem is I don't have my greencard yet (it will take months to come in the mail) and I was told I must keep my visa with me until I receive my greencard so I can't mail it. I also need my visa to set up other things, it's the only proof of residency I have atm.

I am concerned they won't issue me a new drivers license with my name wrong on it as that is one of my required IDs to get a drivers license.

My Visa and passport are spelled correctly.

I'll be calling a social security office tomorrow to see what they say.

Has anyone had their social security card come with wrong spelling or anything else wrong? If so what did you do?

    Hello,

After receiving the passport with your immigration visa; Did anyone cross the US border by land (not air) since COVID-19 and the officer processed your visa without any issues?

It seems that US border is not opened for Canadians non-essentials, or I’ll be considered US permanent resident since I have the immigrant visa?

    Thank you all.

    ioana.

Yes we did so at the Michigan border on July 17th with no issues.

  6. Hi there! We just moved to Florida a couple days ago. At the border when we immigrated the officer said our stamped visa is good for a year and that because of covid, processing green cards are backed up and slow so it might take a while to get it in the mail.

He said if we haven't received it within 10 months we need to file for an extension for that stamp with USCIC.

Has anyone here moved during covid and got their green card? If so how long did it take to come after immigrating?

Also how long did it take your social security card to come?

    Thanks!

Totally fine for you to drive across to the US if you are married to a US Citizen, or permanent resident,  no need for covid test or isolation bs, just don't forget anything in Ontario because they will ask for a covid test for as much as a Uturn  in the States lol!

I live 10 min from the border so I go across often to breathe freedom and buy essentials.  I just show up with my tourist visa and my American marriage certificate, sometimes with my husband but even with your husband you have to have the Marriage certificate or you can prove you are related.

Thank you. We are a family visa so once it's activated when we cross we are permanent residents. My husband's father is our sponsor. I just wasn't sure if we could drive over when immigrating. Or if they won't let you by land cause of the current land border restrictions. And if yes if we need covid tests.

Thanks very much! We are also crossing at Windsor/Detroit so I'll give them a call. My car is completely paid off so she's all mine :) good luck with your dog! We're driving a cat down...

Thanks! Yep we got her shots updated and her certificate and all her medical history. When do you move? We will cross into the US July 17th.

OK awesome! My car is on its last legs and I am planning on using the money from the sale of my house to buy a new car when I get to Texas. My insurance runs out in August and my underwriters gave me an extension on my policy since it was only a month. I read in another thread about an emissions letter??? I didn't know if I needed that just to drive over as an LPR.

As long as your car isn't financed I think you should be ok. If ot is you need permission to bring it to the US. The emissions letter I think is of you're importing it. If it's over a certain age or doesn't have the label in the car that says it's emissions approved. You can always call the port of entry you're going to cross to ask. That's what we did.

What if you're not importing your car but just driving it over? Does it still need to meet US emission standards? I am driving my very old car over because I can't afford a rental. I won't be importing my car. Thanks.

You can drive over in your car I'm sure cause you can drive over as a tourist in your own car. You just won't be able to register and get a new license plate for it without importing. I may be wrong but I think I read that somewhere. Cause some people don't import right at the border when they enter. They do it later when they register and get new plates.

Hello, Im not sure if this helps but Im in a similar situacion but with Mexico and K1 visa. I know the restrictions got extended another month to July 20 (hopefully the last). So I called CBP and went down in person to their processing/permit unit on 2 seperate occasions, and I was told both times that they are processing K1 visa's despite the restrictions. K1 is technically non-immigrant, Soooo I think its safe to say you're good to go with the spousal visa since its immigrant🙂. I haven't crossed my fiancé yet as she has not received her visa so I can't tell you first hand. Hopefully we get it soon, its been over 7 days since It was issued and still nothing

Thank you! I'm not spousal either but Family F3 which is also an immigrant visa. Good luck with everything! 🙂

need list and proof of rabies shots and other treatments dog has had

car has to have US emissions standards

Oh yes I know all that. We have all of that ready to go 🙂. I'm more concerned about us being allowed in through land in general. Will they let us through by land or are they not allowing people moving at land borders right now?

  13. We are moving to the US in 2 weeks and are planning to drive into the US as we have our car to bring and our dog.

Are Canadians moving to the US with valid visas allowed to drive in at a land border with current restrictions?

From what I've read I THINK it's ok as we are lawful permanent residents now and have proper travel documentation (our visas etc). But I wanted to ask here just incase cause I find it confusing. It doesn't flat out say people moving there from what I can see.

It will be the Ontario/Michigan border crossing.

Regarding mixing vaccine doses...looks promising! Great!

Mixing COVID-19 vaccines appears to boost immune responses

    By Gretchen VogelJun. 9, 2021 , 11:00 AM

"...Canada and several European countries are now recommending a different vaccine for the second dose in some patients. Early data suggest the approach, born of necessity, may actually be beneficial..."

    Thanks!

I did this back in 2012 after I came in on K1 so things may be a bit different now. I had to wait until my AOS application was approved and I received my GC. Once I had that, then I called the number listed above. They should be able to give you information. Back then I spoke to an actual person but things could have changed. Collecting Canadian UI benefits is called an out of state UI claim Hope that helps if you have to google anything.

Hope that this helps and good luck

Oh ok great thanks! We are family based visa so we can work right away. I'll have to look into when I can apply.

Yeah, thanks. Have NO idea what that was all about. Docs could not figure it out either.

Am fine now, I think! hee hee

Yes, Jensen Beach. Cool. Never been there either.

The Atlantic Coast tends to be more developed, crowded, and expensive, from what we see after 4 years here.

Regarding the vaccine, I think (at least some) doctors advise against mixing the doses, I hear.

I preferred Pfizer, and so drove 45 mins to another county to get it next day. Here in Pasco County they were mostly doing Moderna. But that was months and months ago. Now they can be gotten everywhere.

Look into the mixing doses thing. I would not mix them. You will definitely have choices here...though some might be a bit further away.

I asked my doc and she confirmed Moderna and Pfizer are the same type of vaccine so you can mix them. Actually in somw cases here that's just what they're doing,  you get whichever they have for your 2nd dose as long as they're interchangeable like those 2

Ah...booked my first months ago...for next day appt. Was great!

The second shot was a pain. Ended up in emergency...heart was pounding like a jackhammer. Did CT scans, was in hospital for 6 hours.

    And this was Pfizer.

Spouse got both within the past month or so, and almost NO ONE was there.  Empty parking lot at Univ of South Florida.

Right now, you can do walk-ins at Walgreens, no appointment  required.

SMH...the inconsistency of access is disturbing. We HAVE to do better.

Oh wow glad you're ok now! My 1st was Pfizer but looks like I probably have to get Moderna for my 2nd. Hopefully it won't be too bad.

Have family in Port St. Lucie. They've been there decades.

Almost relocated to Atlantic Coast decades ago (Boca), and again when we immigrated from Philippines.

We had never been to the Gulf Coast before, but love it here.

But miss Hawaii (previous primary residence) every single day.

We're going to Jensen beach which isn't far from Port St.Lucie. I haven't been to the Gulf side yet either.
