  1. I grew up all my life in the Filipino/Asian culture, and we still had our cultural differences. The problem for me, is that her culture and mine is similliar. So I would expect her to know all the little differences. Then we would fight, but now we are good. In fact I think she has it easier here, than someone from the Mainland.

  2. We buy the local brand Hinode rice here in Hawaii. I assume they import the rice from somewhere else though. Also the wife and I prefer the hapa rice, which is half white and brown rice, or we call it the ABS-CBN rice  .

  3. He is Tagalog from quezon province so no family in US that he knows of :(

I see then, yeah not too many non-Ilocanos in Hawaii. I assumed that he was Ilocano too. Oh well he will learn Ilocano real fast. My wife's best friends are Tagalog and they are married to local born Ilocanos, so he should be fine.

  4. Well no surprise to me that Angelica is Hapa, she looks like half white to me. But still the plight of Amerasians is still sad. Being Hapa myself, I feel for them, coz it is hard to be mixed, even growing up in Hawaii. It is strange that in PI, that the half white kids would be teased, coz ABS-CBN is practically the Half puti network.

  5. Haha... Thanks guys... I know HAWAII environment is similar to PI PRovinces but just him not having his family around will be a different experiece. I'll try find a way to get his family a laptop and Internet at their home so they can SKYPE :)

Wow an Ilocano with no family in Hawaii, besides your family, I guess it can happen. Yeah I guess we will try the skype thing with my wife and her family in Laoag. I bet he meets some long lost distant relatives and old friends in Hawaii.

  6. Here are more reasons why ...

    1. Can't find decent chicken adobo in D.C. :star:

    2. Too much confusion on what D.C. means. District of Columbia or Daly City? :jest:

    3. The White House cooks don't prepare rice for breakfast and lunch. :D

    4. No golf with Boehner and Biden, play pusoy and mahjong instead.

    5. Can't call the First Lady mommy in front of dignitaries.

Well the main chef in the white house is Filipino, so can get good adobo and rice could be served for lunch and breakfast. Also the current president does eat spam musubi and zip min, but I am not so sure if he eats Filipino food. I think he does coz he was born in Hawaii.

  7. I watched it and it was very good. The culture shock of being from the Philippines to going to the ghetto of Baltimore most have been huge. The one teacher reminded me of some teachers I had in Hawaii. The best story was about the young teacher whose family thought she was rich and spent all her money and kept asking for more. I am glad my wife had an easier time adjusting here.

  8. I feel bad for some of you that have a hard time adjusting, esp the Asian ones. The weird thing here, is that my wife adjusted easier to Hawaii, than someone from the Mainland. In talking to other Asians immigrants, it seems that it is quite easy to adjust here, esp if they are Filipino. While alot of times the whites from the Mainland get huge problems adjusting to Hawaii, esp if they are military. EDIT Yikes as a local born person from Hawaii I no can spell so good.

  9. Longganisa being a sausage is more in line with spaghetti now when you put hotdogs in it, that's a Filipino twist. Hotdogs are not common to the dish. IMO.....

You might be Filipino if......you have a cartful of corned beef, when its on sale.

Hmm that means everybody here in Hawaii is Filipino  That is why spam and corn beef is not sold during black Friday at Wal-Mart na.

  10. My friends were all happy for me. In fact that is how I met my wife. Her cousin is married to my friends cousin. The biggest question was when she was coming so we can throw a big party. I guess when most of my friends are Filipino it is different. We don't have a big age difference and I am Asian, so here in Hawaii mixed Asian couples is pretty common. I would imagine in the mainland, mixed couples with big age gaps could be a problem. I would just tell them F-off, well maybe not so rudely.

  11. My wife found it strange that everything was almost the same as PI here.

    1. Rice is served at most restaurants, including Burger King and McDonalds.

    2. The weather is about the same

    3. Chickens everywhere and crowing roosters

    4. Plenty of Filipinos around, and Ilocano is heard all the time.

    5. Plenty of of freshly grown Filipino fruits and vegetables.

    6. Fish with the head on, shrimp with head on too.

    7. Culture is more Asian than western here.

    8. People singing Karaoke in their garage from time to time.

    9. Finding long lost friends and relatives here already from here province

Those are the main things she found odd about being here. Yet the biggest problem she had was learning the value of the dollar.

  12. Well the Los Angeles area get plenty Filipinos, probably the most in the whole US, next to the bay area. Maybe someone from that area can chime in, coz it is so big. I know Milpitas is where TFC headquarters is, so you can try there.

  13. You could try the catholic churches in your area, or swing by the Asian food markets. But if you are from the area you have a better idea where the Asians are. You could google North Carolina Filipino groups as well. I wish I could help more, well maybe move to Hawaii, get plenty Filipinos here. I know my wife has relatives in South Carolina, which is kinda close.
