Iceland used to have similar rules, but in reality they weren´t enforce-able.

But in any case. The OP doesn´t get citizenship at once when he marries the girlfriend so that question is moot. I suspect that he has at least 3 years of residing in Norway to do, as is the case in DK and IS prior to getting to that decision.

Yes, they are valid until the Permanent Resident (which a K-1 isn't yet) has been working for 40 quarters, which means minimum 10 years, or until he becomes a US citizen, which is a minimum of 3 years as a PR if you remain married to the person you are not engaged to for that time after receiving your PR status.

I've never found US CBP officers to be rude or discourteous. I've always found them to be professional and proper. I've entered the US at many different POEs dozens of times over the years, and never once had a bad experience.

As to why they ask intrusive questions about where we've been and where we're going and what we're doing : that's their job. They've been trained to ask those questions. It has nothing to do with being unionized or with being on a power trip.

It has everything to do with keeping the country safe, allowing the right people in and the wrong people out.

The vast majority of people at POE are legitimately entering the country but as we all learned so well on 9/11, if we didn't realize it earlier, is that there are people intent on harm. The CBP officer needs to quickly filter those people out for further screening as efficiently as possible so the rest of us can get on with our travels. Asking intrusive questions is a way of screening the bad guys. Instead of complaining about it, be grateful that they're keeping us all safe.

That´s a very optimistic assumption that questions such as the below will actually get them some answers that would keep anyone safe. The only people with nefarious intentions they would catch would be of intelligence less than half that of the average person.

Here are the standard questions, almost always asked with a grudging annoyed tone, and sometimes accompanied by some ignorant remark about the answers:

- Where have you been?

- How long where you there?

- What did you do?

- What is your work?

- What line of ......?

- Who do you work for? (and you reply with the name of a obscure small company they´ll never have heard of anyway)

I´ve heard them grudge "what ya doing here", "why you go abroad so often", "why´d you leave the US" etc. Maybe it´s because I fly into a airport that only has 1 international flight and they´re less sophisticated than at other terminals...

I don´t feel any safer with the silly antic safety precautions used at airports now than 5-6 years ago. The bottle ban is merely annoying and nothing else. In any year, except 2001, I´d stand a greater chance of being killed by a lightning than a terrorist so I´m not that much in awe of this "be grateful they´re keeping us all safe" stance. But then again I always chuckle when I hear "the current threat level is orange", because when has it ever been lower and when will the safety-nerds ever allow it to go lower?

What´s up with US Custom´s and Border Patrol officers, why does it seem to be a requirement for that job that you are an a**hole?

Commonly on my travels I hand my passport over to that countries border patrol. They lazily look at the passport and then wish me welcome to their country, or "welcome home" when in my native one. Here in the US however they grudgingly ask where I´ve been, why I go out of the US, what I do for living etc. every single time. It´s like they´re offended by people going abroad or something...

And lets not get into the finger printing and picture taking, I´m close to being of the belief that US citizens should be treated in the same ####### way when they go abroad.

Why does the country that likes to believe they are bastions of liberty and freedom, some sort of "shining beacon" like to treat residents and visitors like dirt?

So I´m scheduled for my biometrics at the Raleigh NC application center (which is actually in Durham NC) on 12/15.

However there is no way I can be there. I have to be approx 900 miles away on work and can not change my schedule.

After spending 10-15 minutes trying to find a phone number for the office online, and then another 10-15 going through the horrible mess of a phone system the USCIS uses I decided to just go ahead and make a infopass appointment regarding my application at the asc.

I have that infopass on 12/09. Am I likely to be able to complete my biometrics during that appointment? Can infopass appointments be used for that purpose?

Cost is a prime consideration - especially if you're talking about rolling this out to include tourists on 2-week holidays.

Big deal, let them complain or stay home.

Hi all, I'm hoping that I can get some help from everyone. We had our interview on December 19th and we were not denied or approved. The IO found out that my husband had not registered with NSEERS's back in 2002. He never received a letter to go register. So I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same problem. When I called USCIS last month to put in a service reguest the letter that we recieved in the mail states that we are still waiting to clear FBI name check???? Is NSEERS and FBI name check the same thing. Help please if you can.

I hope someone can answer your question, but on a lighter note then you might have moved to the wrong country if you believe the US invests in education and health of the citizens. This country would much rather spend that money on guns, bombs and useless wars that are counterproductive to national security.

K-1 cannot leave the country until after filing for AOS(I-485) and AP (I-131), and have AP document in hand, AP can take 90 days or so to get.

The Caribbean is not in the USA. Consider other DOMESTIC destinations, like Florida, Hawaii.

I always wonder why US citizens are not interested in showing the recent immigrant to the USA places in the country that they are immigrating to.

Ah, well, but Puerto Rico is also domestic travel. Puerto Ricans are all USC by birth and it's in a sort of half-a-state, half-independent status.

So going to Puerto Rico shouldn't be a problem.

I'm also a September filer. I've just had my interview in San Francisco today and got approved for my green card. Even though we had to wait 50 minutes for the officer to call us, the interview was very smooth and took only 15 minutes. After asking a few questions, the lady said that our case was straight forward and approved it right away.

One tip: when you go to the interview, make sure you don't take cell phones with camera or any recording devices with you. They are not allowed at the USCIS building. We didn't know that and we were sent back to our car!

Hi there, this is my very first post to Visa Journey. It's been 6 years since we first applied for the AOS and this evening I received the denial notice. The reason why: my dad's the principal and they rejected the application because they said he wasn't approved for Advance Parole (we have a copy of that AP with the lawyer). However it says I may appeal using form I-290B within 30 days. It also says if I am no longer in a valid status I must depart the United States. Can I stay during the entire appeal process? Will they deport me? We'll hopefully get some answers tomorrow from our immigration lawyer, but right now I'm so worried I can't sleep.

I hope someone can help, and thanks in advance.

But as I understand this, then the writers father was the principal immigrant(K3) and the writer a child(under K-4). The only thing to do with AP I can see is if the principal immigrant, the father, left the US without AP and was thus considered abandoning the application for AOS, and thereby also for all those immigrating with him as well(his children).

That would be grounds for considering the application abandoned, and is the only sense I can get out of the posting.

But clarification is needed.

Just wanted to push this thread up once more.

I'm currently out of the country and will be allowed to try out my dual-copy AP upon my return to the US of A.

There have been 4 touches on the I-485 in the last seven days, since it was received in Washington.

I have to complement the US bureaus overall, I've been pretty impressed with the efficiency of the USCIS, SSA and State Department in processing and issuing my I-129F, K-1, SS Card, EAD card and AP papers.

I also heard from an American who applied the regular way for a passport(not via expedited service or one of those accelerated processing third parties) and got it back in the mail 8 days after applying. And this was the first passport he's ever held.

That's absolutely not bad for such a large country.
