Congratulations again. just curious, were you able to get that passport the same day for the DC regional passport agency??? only asking as i may need to do the same,whenever i am sworn in. had to pay to change flight once already as i do want to travel with the blue eagle passport and not have to be mindful of overstaying out of the country.

I was I had the papers stated above, nothing fancy just a printout of the itineraries from my Gmail account.

It was very simple and painless. I had made an appointment at the DC passport agency, for the purposes of getting a passport within 14 days of travelling.

My appointment was at 11:30 but I was there at 11:00. I went through the security, checked in, handed my paper bundle and credit card to a lady in a booth and then she told me to come back at 14:00. I was out of there at 11:20 or so.

To kill some time I went and visited the Air and Space Museum, headed back at around 14:00 and was there about a quarter later. The passport was ready and I headed down I-95 back to NC.

Couldn't have been easier. 2.5 hours to get your first passport in a behemoth like the US is not shabby at all.

I guess I'm done. This government shutdown business might put a dent in my travel plans but we'll see.

Can you actually get a US passport same day? If so where, so I can do the same once I get my certificate (crossing fingers by end of summer).

You can. They don´t spell it out completely at the State Department website (http://travel.state.gov/passport/hurry/hurry_831.html) but you can.

What you need is the following:

- All the docs you need anyway to apply for a passport the first time.

- To go to the DC office (maybe other ones that print passports as well but the only one I´ve seen stated for sure is the DC office), having made appointment to go there beforehand.

- To have, on the date of the appoinment, a travel itinerary (booked ticket) or a letter from employer showing that you need to travel within 14 days.

- To pay the expedite fee.

- To be willing to spend a whole day waiting for your passport. Literally waiting.

I´m wrapping up work in TX on the 12th and am planning to fly to DC that evening from DFW. The following morning I´ll show up at the Icelandic embassy and renew my passport (that would otherwise expire in October) and then at the state department at 11:30.

In the afternoon/evening I´ll drive back home. (5 hour drive)

3 days later I´ll travel.

Only 4 days to go until I´m neutralized as my son calls it. Then mid next week I´ll need to race to DC to get a US passport on the spot and also renew my Icelandic one.

Do we get the certificate of naturalization at the ceremony?

Interview yesterday was very surprisingly quick. Entered the USCIS building 12-15 minutes prior to the appointment. Took 10 minutes to go through the people waiting in security. Handed in my appointment letter and got a number ticket for the interview. Waited for the interview ca. 5-8 minutes.

Interview lasted 4-5 minutes and then I waited for the letter with the oath date for about 25 minutes afterwards. Oath ceremony should´ve been on the 4th of March but I requested rescheduling as I cannot do it on that particular day.

It´s nearly over!

Can you guys update the timeline with your info?

I called Uscis and they told me to send a letter telling them the problem with my zipcode, but this is going to dalay all the proccess. My Zipcode was change due to increase in population, but is the same house, and before I was always sent to The West Palm Beach office. I dont know what to do?????????

When I was doing my conversion from the Fiance Visa (I-131) to Permanent Resident (I-485) I had to do the 3 hour drivedown to Charlotte NC from Raleigh for Biometrics. Wasn´t too much of a deal, although my heavy right foot got me the bluelight special on the way down...

Really, they are maybe exaggerating the delay that will be caused by rebooking, perhaps not. So just pick the position/scenario that best fits yourself and do what´s right for you:

1. If you´re really dying to get a US citizenship tomorrow, then just do the drive.

2. If you don´t mind a few weeks delays, then just request another appointment closer to your home, if you came here

as a spouse you´ll have to wait until a minimum of 3 years of PR status is up, otherwise 5 years so maybe there´s

no hurry anyway.

3. If you like driving keep the original appointment.

4. If you really hate driving rebook.

We are definitely used to people come here and let us know how our constitution that has served us so well for so long and survived the test of time is outmoded and needs to change because where they are from is so much better. There is a huge reason that this is enshrined in our constitution and is the law of the land. Foreign born can't comprehend this though and that is the main reason that we should never ever consider them to lead this great nation.

So do you think all "real americans" think the same way? Would you like to limit this perhaps even more to "real americans like me"?

Unless you believe James Madison received the constitution complete from a burning bush somewhere on the top of a Virginia mountain you must realize that it can only be as perfect and flawed as we other mortal humans. 27 amendments since it was originally ratified show that it wasn´t perfect then, it very likely isn´t yet, and probably never will be.

Do you have a SSN card that says "Valid For Work With USCIS Authorization Only" or any such clause in typewriter style fonts across the face of your card?

If so that is a very, very likely candidate for her "Suspect List". "Suspect List" being her misunderstanding of what the clause means. By the way if you have that on your SSN card this only means that you need the SSN card & a valid Green card (or extension letter) to be allowed to work.

It could also be that you are marked as a non citizen and her misunderstanding that as "Suspect List".

But in any case I doubt the USCIS would share lists of people suspected of anything with the SSA. They´d just go ahead and report you to ICE (Immigration or Customs Enforcement) or check your case themselves.

The voters believe all the lies and it's sad that they do. My mother in the UK had a full hysterectomy at age 92 and had her broken hip fixed 2 years later. She lived in a really nice residential home for 15 years and it was all free. The right wing in the US tell the story that anyone over 55 is left to die in the UK or is subject to a death panel. I can't believe that the US insurance companies can spin these stories and are believed - but they do and they are. My USC wife's family believe ALL those stories and think I am lying and being anti-American when I tell them how it is in Europe. I am sure now that Americans will continue to be cannon fodder to big business while believing their country is ahead of all other countries in all things and with no exceptions. I suppose it is some comfort to think they are part of 'the best country that has ever existed in the history of the world' while they are dying in pain and poverty as an insurance - denied person.

This is the one political issue I feel strongly about and I feel guilty that I have an escape door and the rest don't.

I've got two, the other one is the monetary black pit called national security. As far as healthcare goes I only feel bad for the ones that are for single payer healthcare but can't get it passed. I don't really feel sorry for the ones that go on about death panels and other horrors of single payer systems such as the myths of decade long waitlists etc. In my mind they deserve the mess they want, my mother in law included.

Until the U.S. has free universal health care, there is no way I would give up my U.K. Citizenship. It could mean the difference between life and death or at least being reduced to abject poverty. My red passport guarantees that can never happen to me.

I like life in the U.S. but only so long as I am reasonably healthy and the insurance is paying up. I feel sorry for Americans who have no safety net were things to go badly wrong with their health and the insurance company stops coverage or wriggles out of the contract...

Most Americans simply refuse to think about it. My USC wife is deeply aware of this reality and plans on doing 3 years in the U.K. and getting a red passport when she early retires. She lived there for a year and didn't pay a cent - or even a penny. It is worth literally millions of dollars or even life itself in some circumstances.

If the U.K. started to refuse dual citizenship I would withdraw my U.S. Citizenship application right now. I reckon a lot of Canadians would too from what I have read.

That's exactly how I feel. If I, my wife (who was born here) or any of our children ever get terminally ill I/we are out of here ASAP. I'm not bankrupting myself here because this country has a lot of silly people that don't get it how universal coverage gives a peace of mind and simply for the most part takes healthcare concerns out of the picture.

I have a friend in a German jail. He became a US citizen before the German law change of 01/01/2000 allowed for dual citizenship, provided a BBG had been applied for and issued before taking the oath. He assumed that nobody would ever know and continued to use his German passport when entering Germany. He temporarily moved back 18 months ago, and got a job. About 8 months ago he was arrested and prosecuted as an illegal alien who worked without authorization, pretending to be a German citizen. One of the charges was document fraud. He was sentenced to 1 year in prison and will be deported to the US once time is served. He will also never be allowed to visit his old country again.

Today Iceland does officially not care if you have another citizenship, or 10, but back when it was illegal to have another one it was one of those 'naughty, naughty´ slap on the wrist kind of offenses.

Just out of curiosity, this BBG process, is it relatively hard to get approved or relatively easy?

I have one more thing that I've always wondered. Let's say we become US citizen after the oath. But how does the country of birth knows that we are now citizens of another country? Do we automatically abandon our old citizenship once we become a US citizen? I mean many of us are still having the passports from the birth country. I just wonder how would this all work out by itself.

In most cases your home country will never know unless you tell them.

Passports are the property of the countries that issue them, not the property of you as the passport holder.

The US does not confiscate your old passport, and even if they would you would in most cases be able to contact the embassy of your home country and ask to get it back or get a new one.

Life in Iceland must be worse than I thought.

The first one did, that's the short version. The longer one is that wife wanted to go to grad school and those generally require decent language skills so it's easiest to study in a language you know.

Yes life in "marxist" Europe is horrible and ungodly. So much that I can't wait to go back for Christmas, new years and eventually move back. Uness of course sensible people prevail and then we'd all be more relaxed and comfortable here.
