I flied via Tokyo to Dallas Fort-Worth then connected to Nashville. Same as usual, you need to claim your luggage at the 1st point entering US for customs. In my case, even though I booked one ticket all through and checked through my luggage to Nashville, I still had to pick up my luggage in Dallas Fort-Worth, then put them back to the aisle when I got to my connecting flight.

In your case, you'll have to pick up your luggage in Chicago.

    Well .

Thanks for the heads-up! I sort of knew it but wasn't sure. Last time we flew we spent a night in Chicago and the next flight was with a different ticket so, it didn't apply there.

  2. My family and I are making our move back to the US on Nov 19, so I'm just curious to see if anyone has just made the trip into the US recently?

We did travel there from Sweden in June, and while it was nothing special, everything went fairly smooth and all. Just a COVID-19 check at PoE and that's it.

Guessing nothing has changed since then, what I can read and no new rules of quarantine or anything.

We'll be arriving in Chicago and then flying to Salt Lake City. I can't even remember if we have to gather our checked luggage in Chicago but assume not. Only have a 2 hour layover and we need to go through customs and all. Would be nice not having to worry about the bags...

I filed in the end of july and had hoped to get biometrics and all that done in september so I could have the wheels in motion. at this point I still havent heard anything, and I think I will have to change my plans and just stay put. I assume there is no way to ask uscis to refund me the application fee...?

but yes I just attached those two things

    That sucks!

I haven't heard anything new since July. So we'll see... But we're moving back in November so I don't really need it now :)

And I doubt you can get the fee back. They state it's non-refundable and they probably need all the money they can right now.

  4. We're living abroad at the moment and I was lucky to get a job with a US-based company, doing financial work remotely.

However, because of the international tax laws and so forth with employees, I'm at the moment a contractor and just billing the company for my hours.

Then when we get stateside, they will hire me on as a FTE.

That was our solution to get a remote job in the US. But this company is 100% remote with some employees actually living in other countries. So it can happen.

I suggest flexjobs.com, that helped me!

Did they do your biometrics? How long did it take? I am in a similar situation. Waiting for my biometrics so I travel. They accepted everything on july 28. Thats what the website to check status says.

Hey, sorry for the delayed answer!

I did get to leave my fingerprints, the office opened on the last day I was in the States, and I was lucky to get in on a walk-in.

  6. Here's an update for everybody:

So last week, I managed to get a hold of a Tier 2 supervisor at the USCIS and she couldn't really help me. She did see in the system that I was scheduled to receive an appointment for Biometrics, but she had no idea when that will be booked.

I asked her if I could just show up at the local ASC and do a walk-in without the appointment. The only answer I got was "I don't know, but you can try."

So today, the ASC opened at 8 am, first time since March or whatever. Not too many people. Happened to meet a supervisor who had another person see me. I explained my situation, that I'm leaving the country tomorrow and everything. He took my papers and walked in.

About 15 minutes later he came out and said he cannot do anything. I guess it was a crazy day for them today. But he wanted our phone number in case something came up. So we left, kinda disappointed.

Less than 2 hours later, he calls me back, asking me to come by the ASC again before 3 pm. 20 minutes later I show up and talk to him again.

This guy was a true hero, he managed to get me a walk-in and I could leave my fingerprints!! How awesome!!

So I managed to send in the I-131 application and get my fingerprints taken within 5 weeks. BUT, this is not the ordinary. No guarantee whatsoever. I was very, VERY lucky.

So we're leaving the US with the knowledge that they have all they need to approve my travel document! Great trip!

Following up on this. We passed through Atlanta yesterday, 360 days from the last entrance the US. The border officer asked us a few questions sternly (where are you coming from, where do you live, how long have you lived there, what do you do there) and sent us on our way. The place was pretty deserted.

    Good for you guys, congrats!!

Yeah the airports are pretty empty, same with the planes.

We're heading out of the US on Wednesday, flying to Chicago tomorrow morning. Exciting stuff.

Thanks for feedback. Yeah I/m planning to file my 131 today or next week.

    How

When did you file? You can always try to see if they've got an earlier appointment for biometrics, but yeah that sounds like a close call. good luck

They received it in Phoenix on 6/26 because I was cheap and didn't choose an even faster delivery method... Sent it on 6/19. Spend the extra money if you're in need!

The local ASC will open on 7/20 so it is possible to leave fingerprints a whopping 24 hours before I have to leave. But once I receive the I-797 I'm going to give USCIS a call and see if there's any solution. Maybe they already have my prints, one can only hope!

Awesome, I’ll be in the same situation, abroad for 11 months and half! Where did you land?

    We got into Chicago O'Hare.

It's one of the 13 airports that allow entrance according to the Proclamation by the President. But no people either, our plane had maybe 50 passengers, almost empty.

So going through customs and all, went really fast. But was kind of exciting traveling during this global pandemic, it is historical so glad to be part of it! :)

But it still sucks since everything is shut down and takes extra long time to do anything. Hopefully USCIS can expedite my Reentry Permit application.

Same mine is 8/23 so still a long time from now but I booked to go to LA so I would have better chance to have it maintained.

However, I had no other issues entering the US. Been abroad for 11 months and 3 weeks, but the CBP officer just asked why, and then he said Welcome and we were on our way.

The return flight might be more interesting...

  11. We flew to Chicago from Copenhagen with SAS last Friday. We had our trip canceled and changed 4-5 times since March. Finally made it.

But I believe American Airlines have suspended all flights to/from Europe until September.

But Lufthansa was supposed to start flying direct to the US from select airports. Not sure if they started or not.
