and you did not contact the school and ask as we need SS # for classes

anyway,  you must have it now so do the taxes

    • facilitate your care provider’s requirement to enroll in and attend an accredited post-secondary institution to fulfill her Educational Component requirement.

There’s no school, I was an au pair. And yes, I did contact them, they told me they don’t keep those on record and to call the SSN office, who couldn’t provide it without me being here in person.

I’m trying to file my taxes, the question is about the info, not if I should file them or not

    They are correct.

"Since au pair wages are paid for domestic service in a private home, they are not subject to mandatory U.S. income tax withholding and reporting on Forms 941 and W-2. However, au pair wages are includible in the gross income of the recipients, and au pairs are required to file U.S. individual income tax returns."

Yeah, that’s why I’m wondering what info to put on there. That I need to file those taxes is out of the question, I just wanna make sure I do it right

  3. 11 minutes ago, JeanneAdil said:

Your employer could have told you the SS # as they needed it for tax purposes

and it would have shown on the w2 they had to send you which is needed now for the 1040 (any type of 1040)

I asked them, they said they didn’t have it. When calling the SSN office back than, they refused to give me any info without flying back to the US. Also, because an au pair is on a J1 visum, you’re not being paid like a normal US employee and you don’t get W2’s.

  4. Hey guys! Hope someone went through this and can help me out. Back in 2013, I was an Au Pair, but couldn’t file my taxes bc I lost my SSN (tried to retrieve it, was already back in the Netherlands and US can’t provide it without you being here in person). Anyway, since I can file for my 10yr GC around April 2021 and citizenship in about 1,5 years, I want to get it done now.

My question is, should I fill all the personal info out as if it was back than? For example, it asks if you ever applied for a GC and if you ever changed your visa status. Back than the answer was no, of course now I have a GC (since 2019) and moved back here in 2018 on a K1. Also, I took my husbands name, but in 2013 I wasn’t married, so I had my maiden name.

I would think I would have to fill it out with info from back than, just don’t wanna get in trouble with immigration for “lying” on my tax forms, which I’m obviously not trying to do. Any insight would be much appreciated!

I’m also planning on adding a letter with an explanation to the IRS, so they know it’s good intent.

    Thanks!

I actually just looked it up for Idaho, and it does say we need a SSN or at least a letter from the office.

    You will need:

    1. To appear together at a County Recorder’s Office.
    2. Approximately $30 in cash. Many County Recorders do not take checks or cards. (Fee varies by county. Some counties charge up to $20 more on Saturdays.)
    3. A social security number for each applicant. Non-U.S. residents should bring identification from the country in which they are a citizen. No SSN? Obtain a letter from the nearest Social Security Office.
    4. One of the following as proof of identity and age:
      • Current driver’s license
      • State-issued identification card
      • Passport
      • Original birth certificate or certified copy

Well, we already have the spot reserved and everything.

The SSN office should've given you (or your fiance) a letter stating that at this time (s)he can't get an SSN including the reason and that they will update once it's ready etc. Take that letter and all the other documents required.

It's also very normal these days to go through manual verification. I went through it twice last year (once for my maiden and once to change to my married name) and it took I think both times 2-4 weeks (don't know the exact time anymore) before I had my SSN. In the meantime I did have that letter explaining why.

Yes. First time he called they said they would call with an appointment and never did. The second time he finally got through (after two weeks of calling daily) they would not give him an appointment but in for AP to be expedited and now he needs to wait for them to send him a request for evidence. Meanwhile we are going on five months already of waiting...”expediting” seems a bit ironic at this point lol

Unfortunately there's probably nothing an info pass appointment can accomplish, that's why they won't grant one. That's also the reason they switched to info pass appointments over the phone, for them to judge if it's necessary or not. It sucks tho in your case. Hope you hear something soon! I read on here that EAD/AP now can take 6-8 months, so the expedite might be worth it.

The interview was pretty straight forward asked about how we met and the dates from the I-485 form, and the general questions.

Asked about my job (I am currently on H1-B visa) and my wife's job and income.

    Took her paystubs.

Looked at our marriage certificate and asked for more evidence and also photographs had them all, handed it over to the officer.

At the end the told there is lot of case burden ,they will process the case and let me know what the out come is and if they need any additional information they will reach out, but then the officer said she thinks she has all the information they need.

Fingers crossed waiting for any updates on the case, nothing as of now.

Yeah, they told me too that it usually takes them 4-6 weeks before a decision is made so I was very amazed to see the approval later that day. Hope you got approved in the meantime!

Just saying hi -- another K1 visa person from Philly. My husband moved here February 3rd of this year (2019). We filed K1 in February 2018, so it took a full year. We married March 3rd and filed AOS/EAD/AP right after that. Had biometrics a few weeks later and then just sit and wait...feels like forever. My husband's father is very ill and he has been trying to get them to expedite AP. Wrote to congressperson, contacted USCIS a zillion times...so far nothing. Philly does not take infopass appointments or walk ins. So basically you are just at the mercy of the operator who answers (IF they answer...many days he can't get through at all). It's so stressful with visas right now! Anyway, just saying hi to other philly people!

I'm sorry to read about your husbands father. When I was a the Philly office a few weeks ago, I did see people who looked like they were having an info pass appointment. Did your husband call USCIS? Info pass appointments (for most offices now) can only be made over the phone.

  9. The questionnaire that you got has nothing to do with discrimination, a lot of people from high fraud countries get this. Unfortunately once you get this, AP takes a very long time. I'm pretty sure Islambad is a high fraud consulate, I've seen stories on here of people who are in AP for 1+ year. Unfortunately it's a black hole that you'll have to sit out.

Keep in mind that the embassy has to work according to certain rules, racism is absolutely prohibited.

The senator will probably not be able to do much, since this is the embassy, not a USCIS office in the States, but it's always good to give it a try!

Also, keep in mind that WOM (not sure if you are or are not planning on this) forces the embassy to make a decision. If they did not finish their background checks etc yet there's a good chance they can't approve the application which then will end up in a denial.

Good luck, I hope you hear something soon!

The request per the green card interview instructions is vague, it says the following without the words 'copy' or 'certified' in the request (see below). In my opinion certificate has a different meaning than certified...just me. Like I said the Bolivia Embassy kept the certified copy my wife then fiance gave them per their request so if I needed a certified copy that's more money I need to spend which I will do obviously but I have a copy and wondering if that would be ok?

If either you or your spouse were ever married before, all divorce decrees/death certificates for each prior marriage/former spouse.

I've never been divorced so these are just my thoughts. Do you have the original divorce decree? In that case I would just make a copy of it and take both to the interview to proof that the copy you give them is an actual copy of the original.

I have a few questions per bullet items below (shown as numeric values) that came with the AOS interview directions as I put this together today please:

    1. a completed medical examination (form i-693) and vaccination supplement in a sealed envelope (unless already submitted).

My wife handed over over the medical results to the officer at the Miami airport when she entered in February. I have a copy of her DS 3025 Vaccination Documentation Worksheet signed by the US doctor in Bolivia with the checked off items she had done. I also have a small certified vaccination card that’s shows she had influenza and TdaP administered.  What should I bring for this bullet item?

A copy of the DS-3025. Make sure the "completed" box is checked off, otherwise you need a new medical.

At my interview they didn't even ask for it, but I know some officers want to see it again. Also, I printed the page from the I-693 instructions that states you don't need a new medical if you applied for AOS within 1 year of the medical, just in case the officer would give me a hard time over it (I filed within the year, my medical expired April this year and some officers try to tell you that you need a new medical to be approved what's wrong, unless you have a certain condition or if it's not completed)

    1 hour ago, LarryHickman said:

    2. A completed Affidavit(s) of support (Form I-864) with all required evidence, including the following, for each of your sponsors (unless already submitted).

I sent in form I-864 with our AOS application do I need to do this again?

Just take the one you sent. It also states you need to take a copy of the AOS application, so that's part of it anyway. If anything changed in your income you should update your I-864.

    1 hour ago, LarryHickman said:

Also the Embassy kept my certified divorce record and I have a copy from the state, do I need another certified copy or will a copy be ok?

Does it state they need a certified copy or just a copy? And don't you have a copy of the certified copy?

We hope so .  I just hope we don’t have to wait another 7 months for a new date.

I would call on Monday. It happens that an officer takes vacation or gets sick and they have to reschedule all the interviews for that officer, but usually you hear something pretty quick. On Monday they should be able to tell you on the phone why it's cancelled and what's next. Good luck, hope you have your interview soon!

I've just tried calling the USCIS contact center to ask what's happening with my biometrics appointment (6 weeks and counting) and couldn't manage to speak to an actual person - every option I tried sent me down a dead end of hearing information with no option to speak to someone.

If you've called the contact center recently and were able to speak to someone, how did you do it? What option(s) did you choose? Thanks

Just keep hitting 0, works (almost) every time with every company I called (including USCIS)

I'm not sure if im in the correct forum. If not, admin please move me to the correct topic.

My mother in-laws is here in  k3 family base visa ( arrived in April 2019). The USPS sent the GC but it was returned, exactly don't know why. We only found out about this after a visit to the local USICS office this month.

I've also called them the directly, long wait but finally got through. Explain the issue again. So they submited a case inquiry and told us to wait for 30 days for a respond. As far as i know it, there are no RFE or any hiccup, other not being delivered.

Ok so here is the question, i heard that they now are hand delivering GC directly to your door. And that if you're not home,  i'm assuming  they (USPS) wont leave any indication of an attempt delivery. That you have to visit the local USICS, sign some paper, and wait for delivery again. Has anybody experience this?

sorry for the long text, and thank you for the advice,

They deliver the green card in your mailbox, but it is a track and trace envelope so you should be able to follow it. Once the status goes to "card was picked up by the postal service" there will be a track and trace number in your case to follow the envelope.

Hi fellow VJ friends, I noticed in my email future USPS  mail I’ll receive my wife is getting the AOS interview notice and I checked and yes we have an interview scheduled and I’ll know the date once I get home and open the letter.

Just as a reminder...any suggestions for our green card K1?

Just follow the instructions on the interview letter, it's pretty clear what you need. We had my interview last week and got approved. The officer didn't need most of the stuff on there except extra evidence, my passport with visa and both of our DL's, but we did take everything and you should def take everything on the list. As long as you're well prepared you should be fine.

We just got scheduled on the 4th.    We are November 2017 filers....

This feels like a kick in the teeth.

    Anyone else experience this situation?

“On July 16, 2019, we cancelled your interview for your Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, Receipt Number Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, and mailed you a cancellation notice.

We will notify you by mail if the appointment is rescheduled, a decision is made, or if we need something from you.

Please follow any instructions in the notice.

If you do not receive your notice by August 15, 2019, please go to www.uscis.gov/e-request to request a copy of the notice.

If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.”

I know someone who had this too, it turned out their interview was rescheduled. Usually you get an update pretty quick after.

If you did not hear anything yet, best to reach out to USCIS to see what's going on.

As the title states, I don't have the majority of the documents requested because I never got my ead and with that I never got my SSN and as a result I wasn't able to have any USA documents. The only JOINT document we can show is our apartment lease and I guess our gym membership. We are under the phone bill of my mother in law but it doesn't show any names but hers on the bill.
I have plenty of pictures from our marriage and together with the family during birthdays, festivites and such, and also letters that I got from family members that live far away who congratulated us for our marriage. Also I don't know if this matters as proof, but recently my parents shipped over here my dog from my home country. Also I can show call/text records between me and my husband.
Along with that, this is due to my own stupidity I would say, I don't have a copy of the packet we sent for our AOS request. We can easily recuperate what was inside there, aside from the check and maybe one more document. (I have pdf copies of my ead and aos filed, it only miss the signature because it was before I printed those out).
Do we need to submit another affidativ of support? And do I have to have another medical examination done? (I already submitted this documents in the aos packet)

I'm sorry if this is a lot but I'm feeling really stressed by this, because I don't want to lose everything like this, and I don't want to have to leave my husband side. Thank you in advance to who answers!

Take whatever you have and explain why you don't have that much yet. Maybe some affidavits from family members would help, since you have no joint finances etc.

I had a folder on my laptop with all the documents we sent for AOS,  printed all that again and took an updated I-864 + most recent tax returns and all the other documentation they asked for.

And no, no new medical is needed. Check the instructions from I-693, it clearly states in there that if you filed within 1 year after overseas medical a new medical is not necessary. I also took a print of that page to the interview for if we would get a hard time over it, officer didn't even ask about the medical.

Also, try to be a little better prepared for ROC. I started getting bills in both of our names a few months after I moved here, got a joint bank account etc. Did not need my SSN for anything except the car loan. I gathered everything in folders on my laptop over the months. Good thing to do for your ROC so you don't have to stress out over it.

    Hello,

With form i-864 I know my wife only needs to submit accompanying tax returns for last year, 2017 and 2016 are optional,

But, do I need to put tax return info for 2017 and 2016 in boxes 24b and 24c even if I am not attaching the accompanying tax returns? If not required I would rather leave blank as one year her earnings were below the threshold.

    Thanks in advance,

    Adam

Yes, you still have to provide the numbers of the last 3 years, regardless if you send all the tax returns / transcripts or only the most recent one.

    Hi,

Can you provide a list of documents that you had carried and submitted to the officer?

    Thanks,

    Harsh

A copy of the full AOS application, updated I-864 + required documentation, birth certificate from both me and my husband, original and copies of all ID's (both DL's, both passports, K1 visa, EAD/AP card), copy of all I-797's (EAD/AP/AOS), interview letter, shared bills, proof that my husband is on my health insurance / beneficiary of life insurance, pictures of the wedding and with family/friends on different occasions, car/home insurance on both names, car registration on both names, copy of shared cc's, bank statements that proof that we have an active shared bank account.

Make sure you bring all originals AND copies. The officer didn't ask for any of the documents that were required on the interview letter (my husbands birth certificate, passport etc), but officially you have to take original and copy. If you fail to provide a copy they may keep the originals.

Also, we brought cards from the wedding and holidays that my family in law had sent us, but the officer said he didn't accept that (with a smile) because the file was already so big lol. But he said some officers do accept it. So better take a little too much than too little.

    Praying for mine now 🙏 it's on 7/18. 🤐😑

    Thank you!

Just take all the documents you need and you'll be fine :) I was a little intimidated by the officer because he told me to not move the chair and told me not to nod when my husband answered questions (I understand, they need to make sure you're not signaling). It's their job to act like this to pick out the rotten apples. In the end he got more relaxed.

  21. Hi guys,

Just wanted to let you know I had my green card interview today (morning) in Philadelphia (filed September 12th 2018).

It was pretty quick, maybe 20-30 minutes. The officer was pretty stern, but he has to be. He was nice tho. He asked my husband a few questions (how did you meet, what are her parents name, where do they live etc) and then went over the yes/no questions with me. After that he asked me if I had any new documentation I wanted to add to the file, so I gave him all the shared bills, cc's etc.

Afterwards he told us he usually makes a decision in 4-6 weeks, so I was a little disappointed that we didn't get a recommendation for approval or anything and we did not know if everything was in place. He also explained what happens when your case get's approved, denied or RFE'd.

When I checked the case tracker at the end of today the status changed to 'new card is being produced' 😊

Also, for everyone who is worried about the medical. My medical expired in April this year, but I filed within 1 year after medical. The officer did not even ask for it, nor did he ask for any of my husbands documents (birth certificate, passport) He just asked for our DL's.

I did print the page from the I-693 instructions where it says you don't need a new medical if you filed within 1 year, just in case, and of course I brought all my husbands documents.
