Why for example is she not staying with your wife?

Actually, good point and we can just do it that way around and there's probably no question anyways. :)

My wife and I will stay together during the period, just the plan was that I'd stay with my wife and our friend would stay at my place. So she's put my place down on the application.

Alright, I think all this has really helped. Thank you to all.

(Re: naturalization, that's a long way off yet and we'll be moving back in together *way* before then anyway. I know it's a weird situation...when it comes to love, you do what you do to make it work, right?)

Your living situation is a bit odd from this forum's perspective, but that's life. B2 interview, though, would be all about her.

Got it. Thank you. I know they'll obviously ask her where she's staying and how she knows us but I didn't want to ask a friend to have to explain the complexities of what is (evidently) an unusual situation, so thought I'd check it up in advance. :)

    Thanks again for your help.

Now, I know this is a different matter because she’s not coming for good but it’s a big financial and time commitment to fly thousands of miles to see a friend. I have male friends and my husband has female friends. It’s one thing to drive to the next town to see them but if my husband didn’t want to live with me because he wasn’t usd to having me around and wanted to adjust but then announced a female friend was coming to stay from the other side of the world...I’d find it odd.

For sure. Apologies for grumpiness. After a six years of countries inspecting your motivations for doing the things you do (marrying in the UK, living in the Netherlands with my wife on a non-EU passport, now me moving to the US) it's a bit triggering. :P

I didn't say I wasn't used to having her around. It was a mutual decision but actually, if it's relevant, something that came more from my wife. But that's between us, obviously.

Materially, I'm just concerned that at her interview they will question my own motivations and I'll have my green card called into question. I'm probably being paranoid, since my wife and I are doing things the way we want to do them and everything is legit. But, I dunno, forums are there for exactly this reason.

Ja, well she obviously has a good reason to go home again. And (I'm not even sure why I'm justifying this) it's not like she isn't friends with my wife as well. It's the us living apart bit that got me thinking, re: her B-2 interview.

Having friends is one thing, try to think about it the way a complete stranger would see it. Would you be happy if your wife was to have a male friend come stay with her without you there?

Yes, totally. In fact, that's happened a whole bunch of times. When we lived in the Netherlands she'd travel to the UK for work once every three months and stay alone with friends who lived alone. We'd have friends come to visit and I might be out of town. When she moved over to the US in September, mutual friends of ours visited her before I was able to move as I didn't yet have my visa.

I don't find that odd if you trust each other. But maybe that's just me.

But yeah, obviously I'm aware that it might look odd to immigration hence asking the question. I guess I just don't want something that's genuinely not 'wrong' to be seen as such and affect any one of us. I'll go stay with my wife while my friend is in town anyway, but obviously she's putting down my apartment as the place she's staying (because that's where she'll stay).

    Where is your “friend” from?

That's not a very friendly insinuation. :) She really is a friend. But I take the point.

She lives and works in the Netherlands, but is from Bulgaria.

When you say that it's weird, do you mean that you think it is or that you think immigration will? Because to me it isn't strange to have friends that are members of the opposite sex, whether married or not. When we lived in the UK it's not like the only friends we had visiting from the US were women. My wife has plenty of male friends. :)

  6. hi all,

A friend of mine is going to come visit the US. I recently moved here on a green card and, for the time being, my wife and I have decided to live in separate apartments. We aren't separating but after quite a few months apart we decided it'd work well as a way to get back into the rhythm of living back in each other's lives.

    (Yes, I know it's unusual).

My question: when my friend goes for her B-2 interview, do you know how many questions they will ask about *me*, the person she'll be staying with? I've updated my address with USCIS so they (in theory) know that I'm living at a different place than where my wife lives.

  7. 25 minutes ago, TNJ17 said:

That shouldn't be the case because these things are automatic now. So maybe USCIS made a mistake. Call USCIS and speak to a tier 2 and see what they say. My guess is it's gonna take more than 5 days for this to be solved though.

yeah, I figured there may be have been a mistake. But then I wondered, since it's only been a week and the process can take up to three, maybe i'll just have to wait.

Anyway, I ave a call back with a tier 2 so let's see. Thanks for your response!

  8. Hey all,

Ive been in the USA for a week, and applied for social security number as part of my DS-260 when going though consular processing for permanent resident status.

Because I'm due to start work on July 30 I just went to my local social security card office (in Brooklyn, NY) just in case they might have my number already. They said I'm not even in the system.

Is this normal, or is it possible that the DOS/USCIS has messed up somewhere after I requested it during the DS-260 application?

  9. 1 hour ago, Lemonslice said:

You can start working without the SSN by showing you've applied for a number. Note that this might delay your first pay.

Indeed! I have them this and pointed tk the relevant DOS into but they say that as a policy they want all employees to have an SSN from day one. Will try to get them to adapt. 😀

You say you already have a green card? So you should already have your SSN? Or do you mean you are moving on an immigrant visa and you become a permanent resident on arrival? Terminology matters.

Yes sorry, the latter. I'm coming in as a permanent resident with my green card and SSN to be mailed to me. So I have my residence status in my passport but  no actual card (green or SSN) yet.

  10. hi all!

Not sure where to post this. I have my interview for my green card (FINALLY!) on 26 june.

I've also been offered a job by a US company. In my offer letter it explicitly states that the offer is subject to me being granted the green card, with a start date of July 30.

So, it'd be clear to the consulate that I haven't applied for the job fraudulently.

Will this help or harm my case at interview? Should I take the offer letter with me?

  11. Woop woop! Got confirmation that NVC will be scheduling my interview.

Does anybody know (roughly) how long this takes? Is there any way to know? It'll be going to Amsterdam.

Also, since all the NVC stuff says we should take *original* documents: do certified copies count as originals?

Eg, when we photocopied my wife scanned our *real* marriage certificate, which is with her in the US. I have a certified copy, from the UK government here with me. That counts as "original" right?

Just in case, there are sometimes questions regarding if you have US residency or citizenship and that if you answer "No", the application process will be canceled or your application declined for the position. The companies might pressure you to answer "yes" just so you could continue with the application but do not do that. I read yesterday a post here in forum where one user wrote that the spouse was later refused US citizenship because they had chosen "yes" in a similar question (application could not continue with "no" so the company told them to just check "yes"). You would think what's the big deal because I won't start work before I have my GC but oh well, it became a problem.

I actually had the same question when applying for the job I mentioned above. After checking with the HR of the company I noted "no", then my application was filtered out and they had to look it up from declined folder (I assume :D) and manually add my application to the right pile of people.

Sharing it because I didn't really think that it could be this important.

Thanks. :) Indeed, Ive come across that one before. If I see that question on an application I just don't apply.

  13. 2 minutes ago, Elrona said:

I and the company I applied for know that I might not get my GC in time to start the job (if I should get job offer) but oh well. At least I gave it a try.

    1

Indeed, so this is why I'm looking at a few jobs now. Depending on the speed of the company, it's possible  (but unlikely, hence my original question) that the two things will line up.

I've had two phone interviews in the last week: one are happy to take me to another phone interview, knowing that it's possible I may not get my green card for a while; the other said they didn't want to go further until I actually had it, and to contact them at that time. By which point the role will be gone of course...

Ps thanks for your response about speeding NVC up. Figured as much but worth an ask. :)

I have a question regarding this question :D can you legally look for a job at the NVC stage? Is it possible?

yeah of course! You can look for a job anywhere in the world, right?

It would only be illegal if you took on a job without the right to work. Ie, if a company was not willing to sponsor you for some kind of employment visa or if, before receiving a green card, I signed a contract with the company.

You can interview for a job in Japan if you want, you're just unlikely to get an interview or a job because you have no legal right to work there.

  15. hey all!

Does anybody know if you can hurry the NVC up because of a pending job offer?

I went through a first (telephone) interview with a company in the US this week and, while they seem content to wait on me, I'd like to wrap up the whole thing as soon as possible and not lose out...

NVC sent me a checklist in March that I answered (and they received) in early April, so hoping I get case complete at NVC soon :D

Yeah if they asking for it ,

Means they lost it or they didn't accept your PCC ,

Call them , but most likely you'll have to send the copy of original PCC again

What's weird is I just called to double check with them and the NVC rep said I *didn't* need to send my certificate again but take it to my interview.

For full context, they asked for a different verison of my birth certificate as well. The rep said I did need to send my birth certificate but did not have to re-send the police certificate.

But then the letter says this:

    ______3 - BIRTH CERTIFICATE:_______________________________________
We cannot accept the birth certificate document you sent. You must send us the correct document so we

you must include a certified translation. The translation must include a statement that says:

3 - Birth Certificate - “The document submitted does not fulfill the necessary requirements. Please submit a "long-form" birth

  17. Hey all!

Question about the AOS. My wife (the US citizen sponsoring me and already living in the US) will have 'no' income from previous tax years (since she made her money here in the Netherlands befor moving back in October) but she *does* already had a job (and letter from her employer) showing that she earns over the required income threshold.

So, I don't need a joint sponsor right?

  18. 18 minutes ago, Hadassah123 said:

You should be good with that! That's the version I have too.

Edit: posters above here were K1 filers (myself included) and we're sending docs to the Consulate in Amsterdam - which I know for sure accepts the VOG with English explanation. Not sure if there's a difference for CR1 as you're sending it to NVC....? You might want to find some other recent CR1 filers and send them a message directly.

yes, good point about the CR1 :)

Thanks for your response; that was my worry. Of course, the Amsterdam consulate will do my interview in the end, but it's all got to go through the NVC first. Hmm.

Think I'll just the NVC. Thanks for your help!

  19. Hey all!

I know this post is really old but...

I'm currently in the process of submitting docs to the NVC for a spousal visa. I have a certificate from the Dutch Justice Department but do I need to get it translated?

The certificate is in Dutch with an English part at the bottom that explains what the certificate is for.

Hopefully one of you is still active and picks this up :)

    Cheers
