BrendaClements got a reaction from Crazy Cat in Extremely confused about Consular Processing, HELP
Thank you so much, I thought I did something wrong! I filled in the dates on my timeline and my estimated approval date is sometime in October.

Cases first go to one of the USCIS (service centers). In a few months, it will then be forwarded to NVC. There is always a possibility that your case could be transferred from Nebraska to another service center before moving to NVC.
Make sure you fill in the dates on your VJ timeline. It will then calculate an ESTIMATED approval date.

First the petotoon has to be approved by the USCIS at one of its service centers (California, Texas, Nebraska, Potomac or occasionally Vermont). After some months the petition will (hopefully) be approved and only then will the case be forwarded to the NVC for visa processing. USCIS handles the petition, NVC handles the visa application. It's a two-part process before the embassy gets involved.
