It is very different from London.

One is a massive urban city.

The other is a spread out loosely populated state.

Come on now, this is obvious stuff.

That's rather off topic and could be subject to a whole different thread.

There was a very good response to the article that I believe the 250k statistic comes from. It was published alongside it in the BMJ. You should read it, if you have access to the BMJ. It goes through a number of the methodological flaws in the study and how they extrapolated and made many assumptions to come up with their number.

Your number from the UK I'm less familiar with. So I'd have to see the source on that one.

You were comparing the state of Colorado to the city of London.

That isn't the same as comparing the USA (a country) to the UK (a country).

I shouldn't have to explain that. That's like 8 year old geography.

Jeez sometimes conversations here really go back to basics...

Tube suicides? Ya unfortunately that happens.

What does that have to do with the current conversation?

Yes and my argument is listing all countries together is stupid. Any well educated statistician or pretty much anyone used to looking at data would agree with me.

We gain nothing by putting us in a big list with a ton of countries that are miles apart from us. We don't gain anything from comparing us to Sudan, for example.

We gain far more by selecting the most similar countries and comparing ourselves to learn from others and see what makes us different.

Actually funny enough I thought you wanted to make some comment about how there were no tubes in Colorado (obviously).

Colorado is twice the geographical size. Miles don't kill other miles.

London is about 40% bigger (population), and is entirely urban with a very high population density.

Wasn't I just talking about comparing like with like? Is that really a hard concept?

Edit: I was actually curious just how different they are. Colorado has a population density of 50 per square mile. London is around 3,900.

Next do you want to compare a town of 100 people with Switzerland? Seems just as relevant.

Comparing ourselves to other members of the OECD is FAR closer to like with like than comparing us to every country on the planet.

    Try again.

Yes and unfortunately want seems to make us unique is our inability to protect our citizens compared to similarly wealthy and advantaged companies.

Oh and our poor health outcomes, despite massive money spent.

    There are more examples...

Quite a list to be proud of these days...

Yes. I'd prefer to compare us to those than what IDWAF was trying to do, which was graph us with all countries.

I may have missed part of the thread while I was gone, so if you also happened to point our the flaws in his argument, then apologies.

As long as you give Trump a majestically welcome with all the frills ( secretly wishing he could have such adoration daily at home) he will say anything
and quickly forget saying China is raping the USA, now he publicly praises them.
    Another pair of flip flops.

    Are you serious?

Of course you have to pick and choose what countries. You have to find relevant similar examples to compare to otherwise you are, excuse the overused phrase, comparing "apples to oranges". Of course we are better than Sudan in terms of gun homicide rates. It is more important to ask how we are doing against other economically advanced, stable countries.

That is a no brainer. It is like trying to compare rates of homelessness, or rates of hunger, or rates of poverty. It wouldn't make sense to compare us to extremely poor countries. I mean you could, but you wouldn't get much information out of it and it would be rather pointless.

It's all about eliminating as many possible "confounders" as possible. If you compare us to a country that is at war, for example, obviously their rate will be high. But the cause is obvious. In order to eliminate confounders you look for the most similar places possible. It's applying fairly basic concepts in statistics.

I understand what you're saying, because I am a man, and can relate to his attraction for beautiful women. I get that. What I don't get is the entitlement he feels over these women. That, I find sick and debased.

However, what I find disturbing is that his narrative fails to indicate that these advances are welcomed. At no point he says these women welcome or enjoy the interaction. He says "I don't even wait," and "they let you do it," "you can do anything," and "grab them..." What he is communicating is that their consent or acquiescence is not a factor in his actions. If there was nothing harmless in this type of discourse, you could replace "beautiful women" with "child" and it would convey the same harmless meaning, but obviously it doesn't, and that's where power comes into play. The power he believes his money exerts on other people is no different than the power a boss exerts over an employee, or an adult over a child. Grabbing someone by the arm without their consent is considered assault, let alone grabbing other more intimate parts.

More lies from the Trump regime. He criticized China for currency manipulation and said he'd stop it. He said he'd hire the "best negotiators" to cut deals with China. He said he'd bring them to the table to agree on fairer trade deals. In the end, he just couldn't follow through.

I would not work anywhere in this industry for less than top dollar. I'm in IT in a way, and semi-retired, in Silicon Valley. I got in early on a few successful startups, and cashed in on my stock options. If I were to find myself looking for work in this market, and they offered me a ridiculous wage, I'd tell them what they could do with it. It's stressful, demanding, and you should be paid accordingly. The cost of living in VA/NC is nowhere near what it is in LA, but still, you should be able to draw a salary that inspires you to work, instead of just making ends meet.

Note to add: My company does a lot of business with IT companies in Georgia. The North Atlanta area is known as "payment alley" because of the concentration of payment processing companies. In addition, Atlanta is becoming the Silicon Valley of the south, with many start ups coming to the market. Consider looking in that area, if you were willing to go further south than NC.
